(A Somewhat-Related Digression From the Open Dialogue on Race)
The Open Dialogue on Race continues with a new post on Joy-Ann Reid's blog at:
“BZZZZZZZZZ! "
"THIS IS AN AMBER ALERT!
"REPEAT: THIS IS AN AMBER ALERT!”
I had dozed off in front of the TV the other morning when the buzz jolted me awake. I blinked, looked at the screen, saw the counties affected – Bucks and Montgomery Counties Pennsylvania, the mostly suburban where I live.
A child was missing. I listened to the details – You never know, I frequent those roads, while I was driving the carpool, running errands, or out on my bike, I could have seen the car in question. So I noted the winess's description.
“Suspects are two black men, otherwise unidentified.”
That’s when I knew.
Maybe it was the echo of Susan Smith. Even back in 1994 when Susan Smith’s story was first in the news, I remember thinking that her story did not ring true to me. Smith blamed “a black man” for abducting her children. And then it turned out she herself had drowned her boys in a lake.
Or maybe it was the memory of Charles Stuart, who claimed “a black man” had killed his pregnant wife. Or the clearly unstable Ashley Todd, a McCain supporter who reported that “a black man” had carved a letter “B” (for Barack) into her forehead but who turned out to have cut her own face.
Or maybe the tip-off was that phrase, “otherwise unidentified.”
A day later, my hunch is confirmed. I hear it on my car radio.
A day after claiming via a dramatic cell phone call to 911, that two black men had rammed her car, abducted her and her daughter and thrown them in the trunk of a Cadillac, Bonnie Sweeten and her daughter Julia were found together, safe, in Disney World.
Hearing the news, I told myself the police had no choice. Even if they too had doubts about her story, they had to put out the Amber Alert, they must pursue any possibility, they have to act. They must investigate the witness’s account -- even as they question it -- as long as a child’s safety hangs in the balance.
But Amber Alerts and police procedure aside – and acknowledging how sick, how seriously disturbed these false-reporters are --
I have to ask this question – When will this particular lie stop repeating itself?
When will false-reporters stop believing they can get away with bald-faced lies as long as they blame it on “a black man”?
"Otherwise unidentified."

This really isn't a horror...just substantiation of the fact that pathetic individuals live among us.
What does bother me are the people who would use incidents like this to indict an entire population. I'd say 99.999999% of the people in this country as are disgusted with this kind of thing as you and I are, Faith.
We gotta understand it on some level...and stay away from branding ourselves because of it.
Do you gave to major in math to be a bartender?
The more iIread your comments, the more I see you are significantly challenged in ALL of the essentials of moral life.
Mental. moral and, in fact, a physical midget (even got no nads).
The chain of events that are triggered when a finger is pointed at an otherwise unidentified black man is almost incomprehensible to the average white person who has never been stopped by the police in middle of the night within sight of their own home simply because of the coloe of their skin........
Frank, I think you're off a little bit. You're giving white folks too much credit.
I think this casual nature of justice is partly to blame for the false charges.
"Frank, I think you're off a little bit. You're giving white folks too much credit."
Yeah, I guess I could be. But I hope its not by more than one or two of those 9's after the decimal point! I truly hope!
Frank, I hate to say it but your % is way, way off. Wish it were not but I live in hillbilly heaven and I can assure you that "unidentified" black men take a lot of the raps here, and when you realize that less than 2% of the county is black you have to believe that black men must commit 99% of the crimes in order to justify the accusations. The accusations are purely racist.

As for what's going on with Pat Buchanan, et al, let's call it what it is -- neo-racism, which is the same as the old racism only with less obvious language. The High-Priest of neo-racism was Lee Atwater, who used this new-old racism to get Reagan and Bush the Elder elected. Their campaigns as well as Juniors were the most thinly-disguised racism I've seen since "states-rights". And lest anyone forget, states-rights original objective was the states rights to keep slavery legal.
Racism is also part of the war against Islam, and Bush said as much (before his handlers straightened him out about language) when he called it a Crusade. Can't have those darkies controlling Jerusalem -- or all that oil. As Jesse Ventura rightly asked, how many non-Muslims have we water-boarded?
Unfortunately racism is a big part of these false reports and a part of your country.
Edgar, that's an interesting thought -- that false-reporters get more attention when they play into racial stereotypes.
geezerchick, what a tragedy - and travesty - that you friend's husband went to jail when it sounds like there was at least a reasonable doubt about his guilt. By casual nature of justice, do you mean that once a suspect is found, often the goal becomes to confirm what is already suspected rather than to get to the truth?
Monte, thanks for your rseponse.
Metaness -- I have to check out this documentary you mention, Murder on a Sunday Morning." I have not seen it.
Tom, you make a good point. Her accusation didn't even make sense as a crime. I hadn't heard that great quote from Jesse Ventura before. I think ol' Jesse's been on a roll.
Thanks to everyone for reading my post!
