The Fantastic No-Plastic Project

Can a person go for a whole year without purchasing any plastic?
Day 63

Today was a hang around the house day. Sean worked on his projects and I spent the day in the kitchen. Sean surprised me with some new plastic for himself: a stud sensor. I told him I got rid of mine after I met him. Yeah, yeah, I… Read full post »
Day 62

Had homework all day today, then got in the garden added over a dozen bags of amendments and finished Rototilling. The bags of amendments were soil and compost that I made before we moved and had loaded into rubbish bags to bring it out here to our new… Read full post »
Day 61

Went into Hana today to buy some wood from Hasegawa’s. I needed something for books, so I didn’t want to use scrap plywood. I wanted clear pine. On the way home, I stopped at a new little thrift store that had opened. It benefits Hana’s new dialysis center,… Read full post »
Day 60

Two months down! Went driving today on a fruit hunt. Came back with avocadoes and papayas. Just wild stuff. If someone is going hungry out here, there’s something dreadfully wrong, because fruit is everywhere. It falls on the roofs, on the cars, on the roads, and in the… Read full post »
Day 59

No new plastic today. Rototilled and pulled rocks out of the new garden plot all day until dark. I can hardly wait until I can start planting. Got a little more tilling to do, then I’ll add amendments like compost and greensand, etc. and get some seeds planted… Read full post »

Day 58

Long day today. First full class this evening, and saw the First Contact documentary for the third time. It was shot in 1930 on a gold prospecting expedition in the interior of New Guinea and captures the first time the indigenous people there ever saw Europeans, or in… Read full post »

Day 57

No new plastic today. Slept in, ate pancakes (Sean makes amazing pancakes) and omelets. Our landlord has a couple dozen laying hens and he gave us a dozen fresh eggs, so we’re set as far as that goes. It would be nice if we can get it… Read full post »

Day 56

No new plastic today. Sean and I worked around the house and I finally built a chicken coop out of materials that were already here, mostly recycled lumber that I scavenged (with permission) from new home building sites. Sean had picked up a roll of some newfangled plastic… Read full post »
Day 55

Sean went to town today and came home with two bags (plastic) of munchies that are each larger than my pillow. He justifies it by saying it’s not normal plastic; the bags biodegrade because they are made from a non-polymer base. Uh huh. The last time I heard… Read full post »
Day 54

Spend all day doing homework. It looks like I’ll be reading the quantity equivalent of War and Peace each week.
No new plastic.

Aloha,
Josey
Day 53

Is it considered new plastic if someone offers you a beer? They are taking responsibility for the cap, and it would have been opened and drank anyway, so I’m not sure where it fits in. What do you guys out there think?
Just played in the ocean and… Read full post »
Day 52

Lilikoi! They are just going off right now, so I made a couple gallons of juice. For you folks on the Mainland, lilikoi is how passion fruit is called here in Hawai‘i.
No new plastic today. It’s getting easier every day.

Aloha,
Josey
Day 51

Had school for only an hour tonight. The class is normally three hours long, and will be from here on out, but this was good since I was able to do some errands.
I needed just about everything for laundry, and that was a trying experience. I couldn’t… Read full post »
Day 50

I’m starting to get used to the no plastic lifestyle, or, in reality, a conscious and concerted avoidance of plastic. It’s not nearly as hard as it was in the beginning.
Some things are difficult to resist, like junk food when I’m running errands in town and am… Read full post »
Day 49

No new plastic today. I’ve been trying to find yogurt that isn’t packaged in plastic, but it appears that such an animal is extinct. I’m going to learn how to make my own. Picked up several big potatoes and I’m going to make potato chips — that’s something… Read full post »
Day 48

No new plastic today. School starts on Monday, so I’m working as hard as I can to make this place livable before then.
Went into town today with a truckload of donation stuff. Of course I always have to look around the thrift store for treasures, and I… Read full post »
Day 47

Aside from no new plastic today, Sean is a different man. His work is online and he’s been really pissy for several weeks because of stress and anxiety with the Internet situation. I can’t blame him, but it was hard to be around.
Nice that things are relatively… Read full post »
Day 46

Yay! We have high-speed Internet! And, unavoidably, some new plastic in the form of a satellite receiver box and some new cables — at least there wasn’t tons of plastic packing material in the cardboard boxes the equipment came in.
Been busy, busy, busy here. Sean has been… Read full post »
Day 45

No new plastic today, I guess because we didn’t go anywhere. The satellite goes in tomorrow for sure. I hope it works well out here.

Aloha,
Josey
Day 44

Oh man, did I ever blow it. No plastic for a year… yeah, right!
Went to Costco today to pick up a couple of things for Sean and as I’m walking through the store what do I see? A compost tumbler. Not just any old little compost tumbler,… Read full post »
Day 43

School is starting soon and I am so glad it’s online so I don’t have to buy anything or drive anywhere, but I’m starting to panic because we still don’t have the satellite yet. It’s supposed to be installed the day after tomorrow.
No new plastic today. Just… Read full post »

Day 42

Not much to report. No new plastic. It’s definitely time to build a chicken coop; Cricket is crapping all over the carport and the lanai. I hate to lock her up but this is getting gross. If I step barefoot in chicken shit one more time…… Read full post »

Day 41

No new plastic today. It’s hot as Hades. Slept most of the day and it felt great.

Day 40

Yikes! Sean showed up from his day in town with — say it isn’t so — plastic edging for my garden plot. What is he thinking??? I know he’s just trying to be helpful, but HELLLOOO!
The stuff looks nice, but I haven’t opened the packages. I really… Read full post »
Day 39

Not much to report except some aching muscles and a wonderful lobster dinner. Some local friends of mine caught some slipper lobsters and gave me one. Lucky me!
No new plastic today.
