Disclaimer: I'm writing this with a headache, so I apologize if it's a bit "off" in its analysis.
Today, SCOTUS ruled that the school district had been wrong, and that the young woman's rights had been violated. They voted 8-1 on that decision. The dissenting vote? Clarence Thomas. Apparently, Justice Thomas has no problem with someone rifling through a 13-year old girl's panties.
According to Justice Thomas, the strip search of Savana Redding did not violate the Fourth Amendment. He asserted that the majority’s finding second-guesses the measures that educators take to maintain discipline “and ensure the health and safety of the students in their charge.”
If you remember the details of the case (which are in the link above), Savana was strip-searched because a classmate, who had a beef with her, reported to school officials that Savana was carrying ibuprofen on her. Savana denied it. She was strip-searched. Over ibuprofen. Which many, many young women use for the relief of menstrual cramps.
The decision, available at the NYTimes web site, is in PDF format, and thus cannot be copied here. But, Thomas is essentially arguing that school officials have the right to prevent the distribution of drugs on campus; what is ridiculous is the slippery slope argument Thomas resorts to. Somehow, in his view, ibuprofen (which he insists was a "prescription-strength" dosage) is, in effect, a gateway drug. Allow students to bring ibuprofen for menstrual cramps, and the next thing you know, they're bringing other stuff. He actually refers to "medically induced highs." On ibuprofen? Are you kidding me?
I am happy that SCOTUS has agreed that strip-searching 13-year olds at school, without calling their parents, without allowing the child access to counsel, through what was, in effect, a case of institutional bullying, was unacceptable. But Thomas, once appointed head of the EEOC, refuses to see the common sense approach of the other justices. For him, ibuprofen today, Viagra tomorrow.

Ann Coulter has proven once again that she has no business speaking on television. She incites violence. She celebrates death and destruction. In this case, she is dancing on Dr. George Tiller's grave.
I wrote about the terrorist assassination of George Tiller when it happened. On June 22, when appearing on Bill O'Reilly's show, this is what that poor excuse for a human being had to say. "I don’t really like to think of it as a murder. It was terminating Tiller in the 203rd trimester."
If you're like me, her words are so sickening, I immediately went to NARAL and made a donation which you can do here. In exchange for your donation, you'll receive wrist bands that say simply, "TRUST WOMEN."
Trust women. What a simple concept.
Trust a 13-year old who tells you that she didn't bring any ibuprofen to school with her.
Trust a woman who needs to terminate her pregnancy.
But don't trust Ann Coulter. At this point, I believe she will say anything to attract attention. I believe in the First Amendment, but I also believe that inciting terrorism is akin to shouting fire in a crowded theatre, and is not protected speech.
I do not know why she has not been arrested.
I don't know why she wasn't arrested when she advocating killing Justice Stevens.
Apparently, if you're a white female, you can say whatever the fuck you want on television and no one will call you on your bullshit. Why hasn't the FCC fined her? Jesus. We accidentally see a black woman's breast and the FCC goes ballistic, but a white woman advocates terror, and nothing happens.
So, today, I'm thinking, once again, about the bullshit that passes for discourse in our culture.
But I'm happy that Savana has been vindicated.

i love your analysis as usual but I think there's a word missing in this sentence? "I don't know why she wasn't arrested when she to kill a Supreme Court Justice.."
also which justice are you referring to? I must have missed that. and I positively agree with you that the Janet Jackson hubub had a lot to do with her race. I haven't seen similar obsenity charges lobbed at Britney or Madonna who have definitely revealed nipples in public forums over the years...oy.
P.S. The only mistake I see is that you must have left out a word o this sentence: "I don't know why she wasn't arrested when she to kill a Supreme Court Justice."
Ann Coulter is not a woman.... she is actually a Neanderthal Lady Boy from Thailand.... pay no attention to her.
Really.
Just the mention of the name (I can barely type it) Ann Coulter is enough to induce my gag reflex. It says a lot about America that this unspeakable #$#! is even given a public audience, it says a lot, and none of it is good.
I was surprised at the 8-1 actually given the comments during the hearing, especially from Breyer, Thomas, and the other wind bag.
It is a good win for this, but a mixed blessing I think.
Coulter is just a moron. Don't let her get to you. She belongs to the Palin/Hasselbeck girl club. They meet every 4 minutes on twitter and plan this crap. Kidding. But seriously, the world is full of media these days, and many are just not that bright: Coulter being right there at the top.
sorry for the totally inappropriate comment but it seemed more interesting than "you're right", which, of course, you are.

You have to give Clarence Thomas kudos for being consistent, he didn't think it was wrong to harass Anita hill, either.
Sean Hannity's older brother, Ann Coulter, on the other hand is simply a probe placed in the ass of humanity by visiting aliens.
ooooooooooommmmmmmmmmmmmm...
and for those of us who aren't morally opposed to capital or credit, donating to naral is a beautiful response.
What I find particularly ironic is Ann and Bill's chit chat about how "afraid" the righties are of the pro-choicers; this is their explanation, voiced regretfully but with understanding, of why conservatives aren't out there giving graphic details of what Tiller did for a living. This, after a pro-lifer gunned down a pro-choicer?
For the record, the whole abortion debate makes me queasy. I'm not as dogmatic as some about choosing to abort up until birth. I'm not remotely in favor of criminalization, so that makes me pro-choice all the way, but I am neither blithe nor certain about the issue. Of one thing I am certain: I don't want to stand with Ann Coulter on anything.
Thomas has said triumphantly that he plans to live to 100 and stay on the SC til he breathes his last just to get back at all his haters. I don't hear anything about anyone proposing to abort him in his 203rd trimester, though. See, we liberals play by different rules--the "Christian" ones, actually.
Thank you for this. It needs to be said.
Well, everything is context-relative, huh? And here I mean simply, FingerLakes, that there is a place and a manner for displays of righteous indignation, and you choose both, it seems to me, with exquisite propriety. Truth to power... speak it, ma'am!
[Now, as to you talking dirty in any other context? I haven't seen, I haven't heard, and will not fantasize, albeit righteously tempting.]
As well, being a lawyer, she's very savvy in the way she expresses her statements. Someone would argue that this isn't actually direct incitement, merely subtle interpretation - she's far too clever to incite directly, as are the likes of O'Reilly and Hannity, all three of whom are tools of the media.
She'll come a cropper one day, however. Regrettably, in a society founded upon the First Amendment, we have to take the wheat with the chaff. Rather than prohibit her or arrest her, the first step might just be for everyone to ignore this piece of detritus. By not paying attention to her rantings, she's not being given the bully pulpit - but if she has to have it, I'd like to see whoever's interviewing her do this: Instead of arguing with her, LAUGH at her. Laugh at the inanity of what she's saying or suggesting, and encourage others to do likewise. If she wants to command centre stage, then make her performance worthy of theatre of the absurd. She'll soon go away.
I'll ask again: Why does Ann Coulter have an adams apple?
One more question: How are kids supposed to get their prescription medications when they're in school? It's been a while...all the little ones are too grown for this stupidity.
