Lorraine Berry lives in the Fingerlakes region of New York, although it's her transplanted home. On weekends, she can be heard throughout the area, cheering on her beloved Manchester City F.C. When not writing at Does This Make Sense? or Talking Writing, she can be found hiking with her two dogs, hanging out with her two daughters, eating what her beloved Rob has cooked for her, or teaching creative writing at a small college in the area.

Weekend Quotations: Nin & Parker

Rate: 13 Flag

I might repeat to myself slowly and soothingly, a list of quotations beautiful from minds profound - if I can remember any of the damn things.    Dorothy Parker

We don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.    Anais Nin

(Nin)

If you want to know what God thinks of money, just look at the people he gave it to.   Dorothy Parker

I, with a deeper instinct, choose a man who compels my strength, who makes enormous demands on me, who does not doubt my courage or my toughness, who does not believe me naïve or innocent, who has the courage to treat me like a woman.    Anais Nin

The best way to keep children home is to make the home atmosphere pleasant--and let the air out of the tires.    Dorothy Parker

We write to taste life twice, in the moment and in retrospect. Anais Nin

I went to a convent in New York and was fired finally for my insistence that the Immaculate Conception was spontaneous combustion.    Dorothy Parker

From the backstabbing co-worker to the meddling sister-in-law, you are in charge of how you react to the people and events in your life. You can either give negativity power over your life or you can choose happiness instead. Take control and choose to focus on what is important in your life. Those who cannot live fully often become destroyers of life.     Anais Nin

My land is bare of chattering folk;
the clouds are low along the ridges,
and sweet's the air with curly smoke
from all my burning bridges.
Dorothy Parker

Anxiety is love's greatest killer. It makes others feel as you might when a drowning man holds on to you. You want to save him, but you know he will strangle you with his panic.    Anais Nin

If I didn't care for fun and such,
I'd probably amount to much.
But I shall stay the way I am,
Because I do not give a damn.
    Dorothy Parker

I am lonely, yet not everybody will do. I don't know why, some people fill the gaps and others emphasize my loneliness. In reality those who satisfy me are those who simply allow me to live with my ''idea of them.”     Anais Nin

Ducking for apples - change one letter and it's the story of my life.    Dorothy Parker

We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.    Anais Nin

The first thing I do in the morning is brush my teeth and sharpen my tongue.      Dorothy Parker

If you do not breathe through writing, if you do not cry out in writing, or sing in writing, then don't write, because our culture has no use for it.    Anais Nin

Heterosexuality is not normal, it's just common.    Dorothy Parker

My life has been enlightened by two Dorothys and one Alice. It's always good to meet them again.

Oscar Wilde is also not bad.

A little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal.

I wish I'd read that years ago. All were wonderful, thank you for the selections.
wonderful. now do Gertrude Stein.
A wonderful contrasting presentation of two superb minds...thanks!
I second what Neilpaul said.

I was familiar with Parker's wit, but not with Nin's acuity.
Juxtaposition made me enjoy them both more!
These are wonderful. I was not familiar with either of them. You have enlightened me!
These were some of the best quotes ever. ~r
They play off each other so well, one barbed and caustic, the other philosophical and introspective--and yet they both have the same target in sight. You've chosen and arranged these quotations well. That second-last quotation by Nin will stay with me for a good long time--much to ponder.
I am not familiar with Dorothy Parker, but Anais Nin is filigran, very wise and liberal.

A delightful, nourishing breakfast plate.
You all have inspired me to do this type of quotation collection more often. To find two writers, both of the same era, who approached life in similar fashions but who wrote about it in different fashions.
Someone has suggested Gertrude Stein. Who would you play her off?

I once wrote a paper in college in which I imagined Camus and Nietzsche having a conversation.

this was fun. And I'm gratified that I've inspired a few people to pick up Nin and read her journals.
Two of my favorite lady writers and I don't have many.
Seeing these words juxtaposed makes it clear who was more content. Parker is funny, but oh so sad, Nin, able to hold both sorrow and beauty simultaneously, apparently without disappointment. Parker makes me laugh, but I roll with Nin.
