Bio
Lorraine Berry lives in the Fingerlakes region of New York, although it's her transplanted home. On weekends, she can be heard throughout the area, cheering on her beloved Manchester City F.C. When not writing at Does This Make Sense? or Talking Writing, she can be found hiking with her two dogs, hanging out with her two daughters, eating what her beloved Rob has cooked for her, or teaching creative writing at a small college in the area.

Weekend Quotations: Thoreau and Thurber

Rate: 12 Flag

Never look back unless you are planning to go that way.

Henry David Thoreau

Thoreau

(Thoreau 1817-1862)

Let us not look back in anger or forward in fear, but around in awareness.

James Thurber

  ThurberCig

  (Thurber 1894-1961)

It is not enough to stay busy. So, too, are the ants. The question is what you are busy about.

Thoreau

The wit makes fun of other persons; the satirist makes fun of the world; the humorist makes fun of himself.

Thurber

The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation.

Thoreau

Nowadays men lead lives of noisy desperation.

Thurber

What is the good of having a nice house without a decent planet to put it on?

Thoreau

Her own mother lived the latter years of her life in the horrible suspicion that electricity was dripping invisibly all over the house.

Thurber

The universe seems bankrupt as soon as we begin to discuss the characters of individuals.

Thoreau

All human beings should try to learn before they die what they are running from, and to, and why.

Thurber

To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of the arts.

Thoreau

It is better to know some of the questions than all of the answers.

Thurber

It is not what you do to the stone, but what the stone does to you.

Thoreau

There are two kinds of light--the glow that illumines, and the glare that obscures.

Thurber

Beware of any enterprise that requires new clothes.

Thoreau

The naked truth about me is to the naked truth about Salvador Dali as an old ukelele in an attic is to a piano in a tree, and I mean a piano with breasts.

Thurber

Ahhh. Great booster rocket to propel me into the weekend. Thanks for gathering these, Lorraine. I shall now start Googling for that picture of Dali's Thurber mentions.
I must admit: the Dali quotation was my favourite.
The Dali one is pretty awesome, but I think my favorite is the "look around with awareness" from Thurber.

I liked them all. Thank you.
I especially like the Thurber quote about two kinds of light. But this one is so on-target these days:

Nowadays men lead lives of noisy desperation.
Although Thurber and Thoreau start out well together sharing the first two letters of their names and both appear insightful, Thoreau leads one to profundity while Thurber makes one laugh. In this world I find it is safer and more enjoyable to laugh.
love thurber, tolerate thoreau, (sometimes i wonder why he didn't jump into walden's pond if he was that miserable..but then he had his sublime days...).
Good stuff, no great stuff!
Interesting collection. I never knew the "look back in anger" expression came from Thurber.
Never look back, unless you plan on going that way... love it!
I loved the contrast and similarities of the two. Great minds think alike.
Excellent. Always an inspiration!
It was pure accident that I chose Thoreau and Thurber. I ran across their quotations because their names were so close, and I thought, why the hell not look up what they've both seen and see if there's anything interesting there?
Still looking for suggestions for the two I should do next week.
Dunno if you've already done it flw but a Gore Vidal-Norman Mailer pairing might be interesting.
Abrawang--I'm afraid they'd get into a fight on my page.
I love these, especially Thurber.
Picasso & Gertrude Stein might open a few eyes ...
... but thank you. A week-end treat.
"... around in awareness." Oh yes ...
Thank you for these this Sunday night.
Love these quotes, some of my favorites!!!!
