If you aren't a Golden State Warrior fan you might not know what Lin-sanity is. I'm a fan, and I was well aware of Lin-sanity the minute Jeremy Lin, the young rookie guard, was drafted by the Warriors earlier this year. But I never understood the excitement surrounding him. He's an unremarkable rookie who played Ivy League basketball. Let's be honest, the Ivy League doesn't produce great NBA players. So what is it? I learned he's a local kid. Okay, that's exciting...kind of. Then I went to a pre-season game and saw the Lin-sanity first hand. The minute he came onto the floor the place went nuts. Why? He's an unproven rookie. What is everyone so excited about? The somebody told me. "He's Asian." I laughed and said "No, really. What is it?" I was waiting for something legitimate. "No, seriously. It's because he's Asian." After I watched the game I realized this was true. He was a fan favorite of Asian fans. It made me confused. When did sports become about race? What about the other two rookies on the team this year? Do they not matter? Are they not worthy of the same support that Lin is, simply because they are of a differnent race? It's racism by it's very definition. As a fan of the Warriors, I could give damn if every person on the team was from Mongolia, as long as they play well. I support the team, not the players I like simply because they look like me. It's such a waste of time. These Asian fans who support Lin don't know him personally. The guy could be an asshole for all they know. Support him for his play, not his lineage.
That said, I hope Lin has a great season. Go Warriors!
