Don't Look Away! Help The Children

Rate: 35 Flag

Child abuse is something that happens in so many households across the world. It doesn’t have a preference of race, religion, financial standings; it effects so many children in the world. Not just the United States, but countries all across the world.  Sad fact is that most of the children abused have relatives that knew about the situation, and the families that did nothing to stop it until it was too late, and the child was dead.

“We all watched as bodies were carried away from the Oklahoma City bombing, and by the end of the week we learned to our horror that nineteen children had died in the blast. You now know that seventy children died that same week at the hands of their parent, just like every week- and most of them were under five years old. Four million luckier children were physically abused last year, and it was not an unusual year.”—Gift of Fear Gavin De Becker

How someone could actually hurt a beautiful child is beyond me. They are a miracle and gift from God, meant to cherish and love with all our hearts. I know myself I would give my world to a child. I have help many children out of bad abusive situations, a couple I almost adopted but their parents changed their minds when they found out that they would lost their state support. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t think about those girls, and wonder what they are doing with their lives and if they are still alive today.

The following videos are just a few of them out there to spread the word about abuse to children. They speak louder then any words I could ever even try to speak for them. The statistics of child abuse and fatalities of children lost to the world, their lives being taken by the hands of people that were suppose to love them, care for them, but chose to take them from the world. Before they could ever speak for themselves and they took their smiles away before they could share it with the world.

The videos are very graphic. No other way to get the point across.

Kelsey Briggs- True story

Nationwide in 2006, an estimated 3,573,000 (3.6 million) children were accepted by the state and local CPS as alleged victims of child abuse. That is a rate of 47.8 per 1,000 children in the U.S.

In 2006, an estimated 1,530 children died as a result of child abuse, an average of four children per day.

Children 0-3 years of age accounted for 78% of child fatalities, while children under one year of age accounted for 44.2 % of child fatalities.

ï‚· 41.1% Neglect
ï‚· 31.4% Combination of maltreatment
ï‚· 22.4% physical abuse
ï‚· 2.9% psychological maltreatment or other types
ï‚· 1.9% medical neglect
ï‚· .3 % sexual abuse.
ï‚· 16. % Of fatalities involved children whose family were known to the CPS agencies.
ï‚· 1 in 4 girls are sexually abused before the age of 18
ï‚· 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before the age of 18
ï‚· 1 in 5 children are solicited sexually while on the internet
ï‚· Nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults (including assaults on adult) occur to children ages 17 and under.
ï‚· And estimated 39 million survivors of childhood sexual abuse in America today.

Even within the walls of their own homes, children are at risk for sexual abuse

ï‚· 30-40% of victims are abused by a family member
ï‚· Another 50% are abused by someone outside of the family home whom they know and trust.
ï‚· Approximately 40% are abused by older or larger children whom they know.
ï‚· Therefore, only 10% are abused by strangers

Sexual abuse can occur at all ages. Probably younger than you think

ï‚· The median age for reported abuse is 9 years old
ï‚· More than 20% of children are sexually abused before the age of 8
ï‚· Nearly 50% of all victims of forcible sodomy, sexual assault with an object, and forcible fondling are children under 12.

Consequences of child sexual abuse begins affecting children and families immediately. They also affect society in innumerable and negative ways. These effects can continue throughout the life of the survivor so the impact on society for the just one survivor continues multiple decades. Try to imagine the impact of 39 million survivors.

Powerful piece. The Oklahoma City Bombing was so tragic, and close to home. I never thought about it in that way before. I had no idea there was so much abuse going- exspecially child abuse. I can bring myself to watch the videos right at this moment. However, this post is informative and will help spread awareness. If we can not or do not protect our children, then nothing else matters.
speak up! You go girl. so many just look away when they know what's happening.
Tink- Yes stop the abuse.. Thank you
Tai- When the Oklahoma city bombing accrued it was very tragic and no of us thought about the children abuse that happened everyday when we seen the children being pulling from the buildings remains. The videos are very graphic, it broke my heart to watch them all. I just hope people will listen and do something.
Thank you
Zuma- There are too many that look away when they know what is happening. There are so mayn children that whose lives would have been save if a family member would have spoke up and made a difference in their lives. Thank you so much..
A brave post Fireeyes. I can't watch the videos now because my own dear 23 year old child is sleeping next to me. We are in a hotel in Marshfield, Wisconsin where she was just hired as a teacher.

Child abuse is an unspeakable horror. So horrible that it is difficult to hear about it long enough to take some action to make a difference. Thanks for doing something to make a difference.
TeresaM-Child abuse is such a horrible action that it is hard to handle and comprehend at time. I am trying my best to try and make a difference here. I can only hope people will listen to what I have to say and the videos I have posted here. Thank you so much. I wish your daughter the best of luck in her teaching.
I agree, Teresa. It is a brave post.

"They (children) are a miracle and gift from God, meant to cherish and love with all our hearts. "

Thanks for fearlessly fighting for the children, Fireeyes.
Tai-- "They (children) are a miracle and gift from God, meant to cherish and love with all our hearts. "_-- They are just that and why we are not treating them as such breaks my heart.
Brave it might be but all I can say is someone needs to speak up for them before it is too late..
Thanks for this . . .
Robin- I adore you also.. xoxoxo Thank you

Owlsays who- You are so welcome. It is something everyone needs to see. Thank you
Some of these statistics are shocking!
Tai - the statistics are very shocking and the videos are very heart breaking.. The videos if you have the courage to watch them, will rip your heart out and bring you to controllable tears. Thank you
And, I finally mustered up the courage to watch the videos. Heartbreaking!@
(Okay, so we were thinking the exact same thing at the same time- it's not like that's never happened before.)
Tai- glad you mustered up the courage to watch the videos. They are very horrifying and heart breaking. And yes it isn't the first time we thought the same things at the sane time.. hugs....
I can't bear to look at these videos, but I don't turn my face away from the problems.

I used to do the "capital" trials down in Vegas for a gal who didn't like doing them. I had no problem with murder trials, rape, etc.

After I had my two babies, right in a row, I had to do an abuse/murder case of a two-year-old, followed by the rape/murder of a 13-year-old. After that, I could not longer do "capitals". Just couldn't.

Thanks for lighting up something too oft left in the dark.
I just can't help but think that some young mother in an abusive relationship or some worried friend of a family might read this post, and it could encourage them to "take action."

If this gives even just one person the courage to do what they know they should- then you have saved a child.
Connie- I don't think I could do a case in court for the rape, murder and abuse of a child. To do it for an adult would be a whole different ballgame. But a child, I couldn't do it, I would have to hang someone in the process. I admire you for having to go through that. I am lightening a subject that so many of tend to forget about. That is unless we practice or work in the law field somewhere. But none the less it is a subject many of us don't want to think about being out there. Our world is supposed to be more perfect than this... Hugs... thank you very much.. if only so many would take the time to read and watch the videos...
Tai- Yes if only one person who is in the situation where they know of a child being abused would read this post. Or someone in a bad relationship that think there is something wrong with their child, but isn't really sure what is going on, if they read this post then they would know there is something going on and they could get help.
*********************

Note**
All I ask is to get the courage to watch to videos.. they tell the story more then I could even imagine to tell it. If you suspect a family member of child abuse, please don't turn a blinds eye and get help for that child before it it too late..
I am a testament to resilience. I am a testament to being able to work through this awfulness. Yet, my experience cannot even make a mark against all those children who cannot make it out. My heart bleeds for them. I thank you for calling attention to this. Peace.
mypsyche-I understand what you are saying about your daily life makes it through all this awfulness, because I would like to think mine does also. But my heart ache and breaks for all the children who can't make it out, and for those who don't have someone to save them from harms way. Unfortunately this is something that happens to often in the lives of children across the world. I will say the world because it isn't just the United Sates, it is everywhere.
Thank you very much.. peace
I've lived through this: I still cry... now for others who are victims.
Chuck- I know how it is to still cry and now cry for others out there. I am just trying to speak for those who can't and don't have a chance to speak for themselves. Thank you
I couldn't read it, but I am glad you brought attention to it. People who abuse children should not be allowed to walk this earth.
MAWB-- It is a very hard subject to read about much less watch the videos. I done a lot of research and watch a lot of videos to find just enough to prove the point here. It made me sick to my stomach, I lost a lot of sleep in the last three days because of it and I bawled my eyes out watching all the videos. Just to come up with enough facts and enough videos to prove my point here on this post. We need not to turn a blinds eye to this subject and we need to speak up now to save the children of the world today.. Thank you very much for coming by.. Hugs
I hate cruelty, and this is the worst. If you witness something like this, it can't be that hard to pick up the phone and call the police, child protective services, something. The only statistic I would question, because I've seen so much exaggeration, is that 20% of children are sexually abused. That would mean that 20% of adults were abused in childhood and I'm sure that 20% of my friends and family were not abused as kids. The thing I hear a lot from friends who had unhappy childhoods is about physical and emotional abuse and abandonment. The horror stories that exist of child sexual abuse would be no less horrifying if the number were closer to 2% instead of 20%.
I often wonder how so many can turn a blind eye when they witness such events only to act so shocked when a neighbors child ends up dead or hospitalized. Good work on this. The statistics are haunting.
Fireeyes, I woke up this morning hearing of Teddy Kennedy's death. I mourn. And now I see this, and mourn even more. What a cruel, cruel world this can be. I thank God for people like Teddy, and I damn the people who could do this kind of thing. Bless you, Fireeyes, for making people think about something other than themselves.
How could one ever hurt a child? For that matter, abuse any living being. This is an illness that needs to be addressed, it needs to be dealt with and it needs to be prevented.

fireeyes, thanks for posting these graphic videos, as shocking as they are; because this crisis which knows no bounds needs to be eradicated from all areas of the world.

FE, I can't and don't need to watch these to understand the seriousness of the crime or the need for great change. For me, just one small act of abuse is too much.
So thanks for your efforts on this. rated.
Those poor babies. Those poor, innocent children.
I'm sorry, but as a parent I simply cannot watch those. I'm sure they would infuriate me.

I do agree with your post though, and thank you sincerely for shedding light on a very dark subject. People need to pay attention.

I will never understand how anyone can hurt a child. Sorry, I just can't watch the videos either. The whole subject breaks my heart!
Fireeyes - I can't think of a more important issue to address. I remember both the OKC bombing and the story of Kelsey Briggs, and many other horror stories of children in our state that have been murdered by their parents. I wish I had some idea of what can be done to stop the abuse - so many things factor in - poverty, addiction, mental illness. I can only pray that those who care for children are aware enough to recognize the signs and brave enough to step forward and stop it.
Rated. This is so tragic and familiar to many of us... I can´t add more. As Chuck says, we still cry, we will cry till the day we day from the wounds caused during childhood. And in the meantime of course we help. If not, we would be as beastly as those who beat a small, defenceless, innocent boy or girl.
Horrific statistics and reality in our culture. It is the worst kind of sin against humanity. It is the ultimate act of cowardice. Those found guilty of these crimes should be held to the maximum penalty of the law. It is our job to protect children, nurture, respect and keep them out of harms way. Deeply disturbing videos, as is this horrible reality for so many innocents.
Read the post, can't watch the videos, thank you!

Difficult to hear, but needs to be said. I am startled daily by reports of children being murdered, neglected, abused by their parents or relatives. I can think of no worse embodiment of evil. As a father I can't even begin to understand what would make someone do these things to a helpless child. It makes me physically sick and makes me have less faith in people. Great post for bringing attention to the issue, but really, really disturbing.
Sirenita- It is the worst cruelty there is. You would think it would be easy to pick up the phone and call it in, but so many cases go unreported until it is too late. 20% of children are sexually abused before the age of 8 yrs old. Evidence of sexual abuse isn't always obvious, and many children never tell that they have been sexual abused. It doesn't happen in some families but it does happen to often in others. Thank you

Michael- It is very shocking to know how many cases do go unreported until the child is dead. Baby Brianna story- she was 6 months old, her mother, father and uncle beat, bite and sexually abused her until they killed her. Her grandmother and another uncle knew about the abuse, and yet did nothing to stop it or report it. New Mexico past a law with her case-that anyone with the knowledge of said abuse to a child would be also punishable by law. The grandmother and other uncle was sentenced to 8 yr(I think I remember that right) for not reporting the abuse to the authorities or CPS. Sad and horrifying to learn how many children could have been save, if someone had done something and not turned a blind eye. Thank you

Scanner- It angers me also at the statistics and the videos made me physically sick watching them. How anyone could hurt a child and not protect them is beyond me.. Thank you

Trig- Thank you very much for your rate on this post.
gmgaston- Yes how could anyone hurt a child, or any living being. It is a horrible illness, and crime that takes the lives of children across the world. It needs to be stopped and people need to stop turning a blinds eyes and start calling authorities before it is too late for the child. The videos are very graphic and disturbing, horrifying to say the least. This is something we her about in the news and news papers, but so many of us don't really know the compact this crime has on society or even the statistics of the crime. Thank you very much

JK Brady-Yes one small act of abuse is way to much. It needs to stop and we all need to speak up when we see it happening. Thank you

ASHKW- The poor children- all they only wanted was to be loved and care for. But someone took their smiles away and to life before they got to live it. Thank you

BillS- As a mother and a grandmother, watching the videos were very disturbing and made me physically ill to watch them and even think about the things that happen in homes across the world. Thank you
JustPamela- I can't understand it either, how someone could hurt a child. I understand you not wanting to watch the videos, they are very disturbing and will ripe at your heart strings even more then just reading about it. It does need to stop and we all need to start speaking but for the lives of many children. Thank you

Dustbowldiva- Oklahoma bombing and the Kelsey Briggs case, and many more of the stories, are horrible tragedies to children. There are so many factors like mental illness, poverty, addictions, but you would also be surprised at how many of the higher income level families have abused and murdered their children also. It is hard to say what can be done to stop this crime against the children in the world. One thing we can all do is not turn a blinds eye and start reporting any signs of abuse that we witness. Hopefully caregivers of children are smart enough and strong enough to speak up and say something when they see signs of abuse among the children in their care. Thank you very much

Marcela- Yes as Chuck said we cry and then we cry still today for the many out there going through the same things. Yes we help and if not then yes we would be just as beastly as the ones who harm children. Thank you

Just Cathy-Very disturbing videos and the horrific statistics. It is something we hear about in the news, when a child is murdered by a family member, but then it is too late for that child. It is very shocking to find out how many families, neighbors and teachers, thought something was happening, or seen the signs and they did nothing to try and save the child. Then what is disturbing is how many of the children are returned to their abusive parents by the law and then later come up murdered. It is an unspeakable and horrific crime that we as the people in the world need to start doing something about it, and start acting when we witness the acts of abuse or see the signs.. Thank you very much
One of my first jobs was with Child Protective Services in Victoria, Texas. My responsibility was to transcribe notes from the various case workers.

On several days, after their standard home visits, I'd plug in the recorder and start typing away with the usual benign records. On more than one occasion, I remember someone in the office tapping me on the shoulder and calling my name == My fingers were poised on the keyboard, frozen. I don't know how long I'd paused or how loud my gasps were at what was flooding my ears from one of the home visits that resulted in unspeakable horror. Reminded me of "Sybil."

I'm sorry, but I have to look away -- They break my heart.
Kindofblue- Thank you for your Amen and your rate on the subject.

Bluesurly-Thank you for your rate on the subject. I do understand not being able to watch the videos.

Thewanderer- It is very disturbing and a horrific crime against children. The worst embodiment of evil- that is for sure. I myself can't understand how someone could hurt a helpless, defenseless child either. It is a subject that needs light shined on it, to make people more aware of what really is going on in homes across the world. To many children are murdered by the people who are supposed to love and care for them. Thank you

Bluerose- Man I can only imagine what it felt like that day, when you were hearing it in your ears of what was happening in that house. That would be a very heartbreaking job to do. Bless you.. Thank you
Thank you for raising awareness of this topic. As the statistics show this is not something happening among strangers, being done by strangers or to strangers. We all need to be aware and to send out the message that is is not tolerated.
pyschomama-You are right it isn't something that is happening among strangers and by strangers. 10% of the sexual assault to children are strangers, the rest is family member or people that they know and trust. It is a message that I thought needed to shine some light on and to make people aware. We spend so much time worried about what I strangers are doing to children when it is the families that are taking and murdering and harming the children.
We need to start speaking up and saying something when we witness some act of abuse to a child. Thank you
Very disturbing. I'm definitely against child abuse myself.
Nan-Yes very disturbing and a subject I thought I would shine some light on to make people aware of what is going on out there. Thank you very much..
Excellent vital reminder. Well written and compelling. I can't even take a mom being short with her child at the check out stand at the grocery store. Thanks for the link. The revolutionary work of Steven Stosny as he works with the abusers themselves is hopeful and powerful (compassionpower.com). Again, thank you for this!
This was NOT a good way to start my day....but, thank you.
Marytkelley- I thought the world could use a vital reminder of what really happens to the children cross the world. It is a very sad and very disturbing subject, but needed to be addressed. I am like you I cringes when I see a parent yelling at a child or miss treating them in public. It is like you want to go ask them "Who is the parent here? Well act like it." Thank you very much.

Patricia- It probably wasn't a great way to start the day for you. But it is a very disturbing subject that needed addressed. Thank you very much..
Clearly a lot of people are not fit to be parents and I imagine a lot of child abuse is the result of screwed up people having children that they didn't plan for and simply don't have the skills, temperment, judgment or money to raise properly.

And to be fair, I'm guessing that MOST of those abusers had pretty screwed up childhoods themselves and were probably the victims of abuse. Is it any surprise they in turn, are not themselves good parents?

i don't remember the exact line, but in the movie Parenthood, Keanu Reeves' character says something like, "You need a license to drive a car. Heck, you need a license to catch a fish. But they'll let any old asshole be a parent."
finstheleft- That is a great line "You need a license to drive a car, a license to catch fish, but they will let any asshole be a parent."
It is a fact that most of them were abused as children or had horrible childhoods, but that is also a fact that can be changed and doesn't have to happen with the right education and therapy they don't have to bad parents like their parents.
Money does pay a huge factor in it also, but there are children abused in rich well off families also. So one can only come up with what the possibilities might be and assume what the cause might be. But the sad fact is that every case is different, none are the same as the other. In order to stop this crime we need to speak up when we witness or have knowledge of the fact that something is happening to a child. There are so many children murdered by their parents and the neighbors, grandparents or other family member knew about it and did nothing.
Thank you very much for your comment.
I want to say I'm at a loss for words and that there are no words to truly and adequately encompass this horror, but we MUST find the words that can turn it around and stop it! Thank you for speaking up!
Zashin- You are right there aren't many words to use to express this kind of horrible acts against the children. But we need to find a way to stop this madness and start speaking up.. Thank you
Someday I'll do a blog and tell you all how the kid feels, even after almost 70 years later.
XJS- I hope you do write a post telling us how the child feels. I can only imagine the pain it that will be in the words as you tell it.. Thank you
Touching and tragic -- great writing, too.

Going to the website NOW.

Markinjapan- Very tragic and horrible.. Thank you very much.
