Bio
I suppose you could say I am just one who never was able to do all he wished he could do in a lifetime. I could never be interested in just one thing, but all things. I suppose it is these twilight years where the dawn is coming closer that I occasionally sit down and write a few of my thoughts. Some stay with me, never seen by others and some I post for the world to see. They are varied subjects, for which my mind will focus on for that time. So for now, allow me to indulge.

Thanksgiving, Loudon Wainwright III version

Rate: 2 Flag

A friend sent the lyrics to me from Loudons 1993 release "Career Moves". Some where in our vast CD collection of over 5,000 CD we have this. If you are a fan of Loudio as I am you know we need say no more.

Louden

Loudon Wainwright III

Thanksgiving

By Loudon Wainwright III

Lord every year we gather here

To eat around this table

Give us the strength to stomach as much

As fast as we are able

Bless this food to our use, thou

Communication's useless

Don't let me drink too much wine

Lord you know that I get ruthless

Let us somehow get through this meal

Without that bad old feeling

With history and memory

And home cooking we're dealing

Remind us that we are all grown up

Adults, no longer children

Now it's our kids that spill the milk

And our turn to want to kill them

I look around and recognize

A sister and a brother

We rarely see our parents now

We hardly see each other

On this auspicious occasion

This special family dinner

If I argue with a loved one, Lord

Please make me the winner

All this food looks and smells so good

But I can hardly taste it

My sense of something has been lost

There's no way to replace it

After the meal, switch on the game

There's just a few more seconds

But I'm so tired, I need a nap

The guest bedroom bed beckons

I fall asleep, I have a dream

And in it is the family

Nothing bad has happened yet

And everyone is happy

Mother and Father, both still young

And naturally they love us

We're all lying on a lawn at night

Watching the stars above us

Lord every year we gather here

To eat around this table

Give us the strength to stomach as much

As fast as we are able

Probably heresy to say I prefer his flamboyant son and vocal gymnast daughter, eh? But ya gotta love some Loudon, too.
I particularly like the verse about lying on the lawn looking at the stars. Fun but thought provoking. Thanks for sharing.

Paws up.
I remember hearing this and crying like a baby. He had such a wonderful song on NPR that I couldn't get online--there was a message about copyright issues. It was after Clinton was first inaugurated and he talked about us electing the Homecoming King and Queen. Did that ever make it to a recording I could find somewhere?
And I still have a 45 of Dead Skunk.
Loudon released this on two of his albums, Therapy and Career Moves.

I don't know how many recordings Loudon released, I know there are a lot. I think you can find a satirical song for nearly every kind dysfunction of family or personal relationships within Loudon extensive catalog. He is every bit a humorous in personal appearances as well. An excellent writer with talented offspring which would seem natural considering that he was also married to some incredibly talented women.

One his songs that I played on air back in the early 90's, "I'd Rather Be Lonely", I dedicated to a woman that I could not get rid of. That is a relationship that almost had me swear off of woman entirely. I have no interest in writing about it and hope that no one ever has to go through that with anyone.

I am not sure if anyone told her of that dedication but that is a very better song and I admit I was very bitter at that time. My daughters hated the women and had good reason to.
