Writer, editor, columnist, producer, parent, activist, former elected official and lifelong Deadhead. I mainly write about politics, pop culture & tech, but my dream is to work with David Simon on any of his projects. I'm pretty sure he doesn't read this blog, so if you know him please have his people get with my people. Oh yeah - and I've got a killer memoir inside of me that's gonna win a pulitzer prize someday.

Jerry Garcia Listening Party For His Birthday

Rate: 4 Flag

Blog posts are eastern time ...it's still August 1 in California

25 minutes of 1981 Dead from Germany. I picked it because it's Estimated Prophet into He's Gone...I mean do I need to explain?

Just take the time and enjoy.

Because it's Jerry's Birthday.  And if you don't mind me saying, Jerry is in his prime here. Just take a moment to listen to his beautiful flowing riffs. C'mon. I dare you to argue with me.

I never saw a bad show in 1981.

And fortunately the videographers in Germany had pretty good up close access so we can get a good look at fingering and facial expressions.

Yeah they go off a little randomly towards the end of Estimated, but that's ok and it's only for about a minute and then into He's Gone.
Grateful Dead - Estimated > He's Gone

Chime away...

Rat in a drain ditch

caught on a limb

you know better

but I know him

Like I told you

What I said

steal your face right off your head

now he's gone

now he's gone

like a steel locomotive - rolling down the track

he's gone, he's gone

and nothins gonna bring him back

he' gone

9 mile skiddin

on a ten mile ride

hot as a pistol but cool inside

cat on a tin roof

dogs in a pile

nothing left to do but smile smile smile

- this is where it gets good-

just let it flow here

...... back in

Going where the wind don't blow so strange

maybe off of some high cold mountain chain

Lost one round but the price wasn't anything

Knife in a back and more of the same

same old rat in a drain ditch

caught on a limb

you know better but I know him

Like I told ya

what I said

steal your face right off your head

now he's gone

now he's gone

he's gone

like a steel locomotive rollin down the tracks

he's gone, he's gone

nothin's gonna bring him back

he's gone

ohhh nothins gonna bring him back

ohhhh nothins gonna bring him back

he's gone

ohhh nothins gonna bring him back

he's gone for good

Well certainly a perfect song choice. I had a Jerry Garcia solo album in my early 20's that I played repeatedly. It had a song on it that I think was on the pop charts called 'Shake It Shimmeree" or something close to that. Nobody ever recognizes it whenever i try to talk about it, but then people seldom recall a Fleetwood Mac album titled "Then Play On" from before the Stevie Nicks/Lindsay Buckingham days either when I bring it up.
Unfortunately, to do fairness to your post here, I don't have the attention span for a 24 minute video so I was visiting other posts while it played out, so I missed the nuances you pointed out but I appreciated your efforts in memory of Jerry!
The Dead were the best when they just jammed, 24 minutes is nothing. I could listen all day. People didn't follow then around the world for nothing. I saw them at the Cow Palace in 74'. I might have taken a little something, because I thought they didn't played each song long enough. It was like a giant community. Everyone shared their stuff. Amazing. And this was an amazing post. Not many people would post a music video this long.Only a die-hard Dead fan.
Hi Teresa - it's Sugaree. Thanks Scanner, glad you enjoyed it!
They did an Estimated Prophet > He's Gone New Years Eve eve in Oakland ('87) about a week before my father died after a long battle with cancer. It helped me come to terms with his passing and remains one of the most beautiful memories I have of thousands of hours of time spent at Dead shows going back to 1978.

Thanks for this, Beth. We miss you, Jerry!
Aaahhhhhh - Sugaree - no wonder no one ever knows what I'm talking about!
