From the New York Times....breaking news:
Norm Coleman, the Republican incumbent, has conceded to the
Democrat Al Franken in the contested Senate race in
Minnesota, ending a seven-month battle over the seat. Earlier
Tuesday afternoon, the Minnesota Supreme Court ruled
unanimously that Mr. Franken was the winner.
Boy...what a gracious loser!

Blue...I was hoping someone would mention the fact that the word "gracious" was probably not needed!!!!
I think they could have resolved this easily by simply having both candidates go up to Lake Woebegon and have a Lutheran vs. Catholic, Dem vs. Rep lutefske dinner with the winner taking all.
First, recounts need to be asked for from the local board of canvassers within the 7 days that they have to certify an election.
Second, recounts would have ONLY needed to be done in precincts where the difference in votes was less than 3% and THAT information would have been available from the county clerks for every county in MN by Midnight the night of the election.
Third, recounts would have been done both by machine AND by hand IF there was a difference in the number of votes between the original tape from the machine and the second (electronic) recount. If there was no difference there would have been no reason to do hand recounts *at all*.
Fourth, it was ridiculous to take it beyond the recounts to start with since there wasn't a hope in HELL that the results would have been overturned by the courts after the local boards of canvassers certified the results and sent it off to the Secretary of State for certification.
Sorry... I know too much about US elections to EVER keep my mouth shut when it comes to the idiocy that candidates engage in with regards to them.
