Bio
On a political continuum with Extreme Liberal at 1 and Extreme Conservative at 10, I can be found at position “P.” I get a chuckle at much of what passes for liberal thought, but don’t much chuckle at anything conservative. Quite frankly, I consider American conservatism to be one of the most dangerous pieces of garbage ever to pollute the planet Earth. A major problem with this mindset is occasioned by the fact that I am a 72 year old, white male who works at a county golf course in one of the richest, most conservative counties in the United States. Since I get free golf (at five county courses) as part of my compensation package, I play 4 – 5 times a week. Bottom line: Goddam near everyone I work with or play golf with, almost all of whom are 70+ year old white, males, is a die-hard conservative. I love each and every one of ‘em—love every bone in their heads. Truly! Sure is a tough haul, though—‘cause I am not given to holding my tongue. Just think of all the fun I have at work and play! Don’tcha envy me?

Our pet cat, Sparky, had to be put down today.

Rate: 24 Flag

Just got back from the vet’s office. Sparky, our pet cat for the last 19 years apparently had a clot go into her brain last night; this morning when we came downstairs, she was staggering, unable to walk, stand, or function in any way.

At her age, the best alternative was euthenasia—which was what the doctor recommended.

She was put down at about 1:00 pm today. We just buried her in a small plot next to the fish pond she loved to visit—and next to the grave of Cat.

Sparky had the distinction of having had her picture in the New York Times (with me and the aforementioned, Cat) back on April 10, 1994. The picture and story accompanying it were on the front page of the second section—above the fold.

We'll miss her—she truly was a sweetheart.

Sparky comes in at the very end of a story I wrote for OS. If you have time to read it, do so. I think you will like it.

Here are some pix taken during the last week:

I'm sorry you had to put your cat to sleep. It's hard to share your life with an animal and then be responsible for euthanizing them. They're part of your family and I'll know you'll miss Sparky. My sincere condolences for your loss.
What a beautiful cat!
Frank,I am with you and your family because I have had to euthanize a young dog,2 1/2 years old.
Later on,I had a dog that died at age 12 after 6 years of diabetes. It is very hard,I know.
Now I have a dog,11 years old,and I hope he is going to stay well for some time to come.
Your sparky is probably thankful for you taking the step.I have heard that animals tend to hide their weekness so they would not be killed by the clowder.
"Time to say Good bye..."
I hope - no pray -that I am as well loved as Sparkey if I cant pull my own plug! Putting my dog down was the saddest thing that i ever had to do. Sorry for your loss.
Frank:
nothing but tears and hugs for you..
HUGGGGGGGG
She looks adorable in these photos. I know you will miss her...especially her insistent "Outside. Now" demands.
:( I'm sorry, sounds like Sparky had a good life though!!!
:( I am sorry Frank, it's so hard to lose them.
Thinking of you and your Sparky. There isn't ever anything easy about days like these.
It's hard to let them go. It sounds like she had a good life, and went without too much suffering. That's a good thought to hang onto.
So sorry to read of this. It's a tough (but right) thing to do.
They really are like family, I had my Mimi Cat for 18 years and she was a blessing. It's hard to lose one as sweet and loving as your Sparky. I'm truly sorry for your loss.
My deepest sympathies. She looks like a very dear pet. I lost mine to euthenasia at the tender young age of four last November. The gap they leave in our hearts in never filled. May she rest in peace in her place near the fish pond.
From my soul to your soul - I am sorry for your loss. We will see each other again. Rated with a Jali Smile. :-)
Frank, I am so sorry. Sparky looks like a wonderful cat. I'm always amazed at the depth of love we feel for our pets, and how much it hurts when they go. My condolences. RIP Sparky.
Wonderful cat story. Funny how Sparky picked up the same trick of ambushing Cat that Cat had with Sweet Pea.
Oops, that comment was supposed to go on the earlier post, which shifted as I was typing it. Evidently shifting back to this one for no understandable reason. This is a grand cat story too, grand because it reveals your love for the critters, but sad for obviously reasons. I've lived with cats as long as I can remember and am always amazed to see such distinctly different personalities. Of the dozens that have deigned to live with us, each was and is unique.

My condolences, Frank.
Very sorry for your loss, Frank. ! 19 years is a great run and she looked from these photos like she knew she was loved.
19 is a good solid life for a cat, still it is so painful to say good bye. Sparky looks like a sweetheart. I have one that is 17 and a half and now clings like glue to me lapping up all the affection she can get while there is still time.
Im so sorry. I'm glad you had all those years with her. Cats are awesome people. :-)

I lost two cats to fip last year (brother and sister), we were in shock. They become such a large part of our lives those little critters.

Best wishes.
Sorry Frank. Sparky had a long life and was loved, you can't go out much better, plus, how many cats make the Times?
So tiny. I'm so sorry for your loss. She looks well loved.
Wonderful how much love these little people let into our lives, and awful the void when they go. ( Don't throw those bowls away yet, Frank ;-)
I'm sure there is some lucky kitten out there just waiting for you! So sorry for your loss.
I'm sorry to hear this, Frank.
I went through this a couple of months ago. The house still feels a little empty. My condolences.
I offer you my sincerest condolences. It is so sad to lose a member of the family, I understand.
oh so sad frank. my heart goes out to you and your family.
Frank, I know the heartache is there, and I was sorry to hear about this. Here's to the great little souls that come into our lives. the ones who's lives were well lived and to the ones not-yet -born....
Frank, so sorry about Sparky. I recently lost my Emmie and my Gigi, so know your pain. Pets truly are our children and losing them leaves a hole in the heart. She was blessed to have a family who loved her so much as you were blessed to have such a wonderful kitty. Big hug.
Requiescat in Pacem, Sparky.

I'm sorry, Frank. I know this pain, I've had to say that last farewell for three beloved cats, now. I view it as the last, most loving act of responsible pet care, to put a suffering animal out of pain.

But it sure is hard to come home to an empty house, unable to stop yourself from looking around for that cat.

It's obviously too soon right now, but my advice is, when it feels right, find yourself a new cat friend. There are lots of cats who need a friend, these days.

...thank you all—from me and Nancy. Our little girl is gone, but still in our hearts. We'll take a bit of time to feel the loss...and more than likely soon give a home to a couple of kittens needing a place to stay.

Don't want to get too philosophical here, but the pain we feel right now is the result of the love and enjoyment we derived from the little bundle of fur in the past. Can't really have one without the other.
frank, so sorry for your loss. i am a fellow cat person. i have two dear and aging cats and i must gird myself for their ultimate losses, too. it is not easy. such precious relationships we have with our pets and how awesomely and sweetly they reward us. your linked story made me smile and it resonated. my vet called my very first cat, not also gone, a "land shark" since she was a fighter with any intrusiveness from strangers. a friend gave me a I think New Yorker cartoon of a man sitting in an interrogation room with frayed clothes and looking disheveled and two cats are hovering near him and the caption reads "good cat/bad cat". you are a good cat storyteller for sure. best, libby
Thanks Libby. Like you with your two aging furry friends, Nancy and I have been steeling ourselves, because Sparky was getting older and weaker.

When Cat and Sweet Pea left us (from the linked story) it was heavy, but for some reason, the loss of Sparky (the runt of the group) has hit especially hard.

Your kind words, and the kind words of everyone here, has heartened Nancy and me. Thanks.
It is always hard. I think the pain we feel at losing a pet is the price we pay for the joy they bring to our lives. Sparky was a lucky cat. R
sorry for your loss. Always tough when a pet dies.
My condolences on your kitty--she was beautiful. I had to put Panther, my beloved cat of 15 years, to sleep last Friday. She was suffering from lymphoma and was no longer responding to medication. She's still my guardian angel. Rated.
:(

Condolences on your loss.
Thanks Natalie, Rw005g, Erica, and Lance. I appreciate the comments.
What a beautiful cat! My heart goes out to you. It's hard to say goodbye to a pet.
