Bio
On a political continuum with Extreme Liberal at 1 and Extreme Conservative at 10, I can be found at position “P.” I get a chuckle at much of what passes for liberal thought, but don’t much chuckle at anything conservative. Quite frankly, I consider American conservatism to be one of the most dangerous pieces of garbage ever to pollute the planet Earth. A major problem with this mindset is occasioned by the fact that I am a 72 year old, white male who works at a county golf course in one of the richest, most conservative counties in the United States. Since I get free golf (at five county courses) as part of my compensation package, I play 4 – 5 times a week. Bottom line: Goddam near everyone I work with or play golf with, almost all of whom are 70+ year old white, males, is a die-hard conservative. I love each and every one of ‘em—love every bone in their heads. Truly! Sure is a tough haul, though—‘cause I am not given to holding my tongue. Just think of all the fun I have at work and play! Don’tcha envy me?

Liberalism...its own worst enemy!

Rate: 5 Flag

In another thread today, I wrote that I thought Liberalism is its own greatest enemy. I'm going to devote a separate thread to the notion.

Fact is, almost nobody who truly wants to see progressive legislation enacted refers to him/herself as a liberal these days. "Progressive" has taken its place for most, because the very word "liberal" has become corrupted and is used mostly these days as an insult.  Only the firebrands who care more about proclaiming their anger and frustration to the world than about actually getting anything done…call themselves “liberals.”

Conservative politicians fight to proclaim their conservatism to their base at every opportunity; liberal politicians hardly ever mention the word “liberal”, because it is lethal.

Liberals…especially you firebrand type…the election coming in November will not, as some want to think, be a cakewalk for Barack Obama. And while some of you have decided that Obama is such scum he is unworthy of your vote, you ought seriously to reconsider, because there are some very substantial issues for America that will be sorely impacted by this election.

Anyone kidding him/herself that Obama and whomever the candidate the Republicans finally settle on ARE ESSENTIALLY THE SAME POLITICALLY…is out of touch with reality.

Even if just the issues of “tax policy” and “federal judicial appointments” are considered…the differences are huge and substantial.

The time for moaning and groaning over unrealistic expectations not being met…are over. Now it is time to get on board. All of you should be doing so.

I'm a lot more concerned with keeping the fascists out of the office than Obama's politics. I wanted FDR and ended up with Eisenhower, however, even Eisenhower is better than this crop of a**holes.
Thanks, Jonathan. I might add that another significant difference the two parties will be their take on human rights issues…which are a major concern. I refer anyone here to Jonathan’s new thread on his speaking at the Lincoln Memorial next week.

Art…thanks for stopping in. In golf we say, “Sometimes the gnats buzz, but you gotta ignore them and concentrate on the ball!” Good luck at the VA. They got me through my cancer.

Bobbot…exactly!!!
Your headline says it all. That's the very definition of a liberal. That and Charlie Brown pounding his head against the tree saying "Good Grief" at the futility of it all.
More appropriately, those of us who have historically classified ourselves as "liberals" also tend to be those who think (again like the little kid on the playground) "no fair" when our hopes are continually dashed.
Thanks, Walter. Allow me to use your comments as a spring board to further comments of my own:

I am as frustrated as any “liberal” that we have not grown up enough as a nation to be a much more “progressive” state.

But as I see it, the safety nets (almost always put in by, or with considerable help from, Democrats)…are in danger. Any Republican no matter how seemingly moderate, will be beholden to the nut cases now steering the Republican agenda…and I guarantee they will have all safety net programs in the crosshairs. They care more about allowing people to own guns than they do about insuring there is food on every table.

If the Republicans win, the legislation will all tend away from the progressive agenda…and the Republican president will appoint a judiciary that will more likely be activists to dismantle what already is in place.

Liberals…wake up! We are all disappointed that more cannot be done in the direction we want to go, but the reality is that the obstructionism of the Republicans has massive backing in the electorate…and expecting more than can be delivered is simply unrealistic.

Stop the grousing, and get with the program.
I was hoping there'd be more meat and potatos in here, Frank. That said, I suppose it's time to tell the liberals, progressives and anti-conservatives, Elect Barak Obama right now. We need to keep him in office right now. I know it's not what you really wanted, but it's time to pull off the bandaid, eat your peas and Re-Elect Obama Right Away.

I wonder why people are offended by the words "liberal" and "progress"? "Conserve" is also a good word, used properly in its correct context. The problem is all the colorings and washes unscrupulous people have painted on these words. That being said, yes, I think this is a very important election just for the reasons you have pointed out.
Thanks Owl. Not sure what “meat and potatoes” I can offer. Mostly I am of the opinion that Obama was a pragmatist getting as much as possible from an almost intolerably obstructive opposition.

Like the people who hate him, I wish he had done more. But I truly think he got as much as anyone could.

That essentially is what I am asking these people to do. To be pragmatic and start supporting Obama, because the alternative is horrible for a progressive agenda.

Ccdarling…we just seem to get all worked up in that language. You are correct…liberal, progressive, conservative all have reasonable connotations…and it is too bad that so many of us have to make them swear words. Let’s hope things change.
