On a political continuum with Extreme Liberal at 1 and Extreme Conservative at 10, I can be found at position “P.” I get a chuckle at much of what passes for liberal thought, but don’t much chuckle at anything conservative. Quite frankly, I consider American conservatism to be one of the most dangerous pieces of garbage ever to pollute the planet Earth. A major problem with this mindset is occasioned by the fact that I am a 72 year old, white male who works at a county golf course in one of the richest, most conservative counties in the United States. Since I get free golf (at five county courses) as part of my compensation package, I play 4 – 5 times a week. Bottom line: Goddam near everyone I work with or play golf with, almost all of whom are 70+ year old white, males, is a die-hard conservative. I love each and every one of ‘em—love every bone in their heads. Truly! Sure is a tough haul, though—‘cause I am not given to holding my tongue. Just think of all the fun I have at work and play! Don’tcha envy me?

I have a cyber-friend from another site who wants to join Open Salon, but he is unable to find a "JOIN" button.

I investigated for him...using Nancy's computer...and when you enter Open Salon as a visitor...the only option given is "sign in."

There is no "join" option that I can find.

Have they decided that no new members can come in because of the spam...and if so, how does this guy join?

This is a bump...I need an answer so I may bump it a couple of times. After I get an answer, I'll probably delete the thread.
Frank, I haven't seen the join button in something like a month or longer. My guess is the answer is related to eliminating spam on the site.
Thanks, Designanator. does one go about joining OS in that case?

Got any ideas?
Frank, best idea I have would be to contact Jake through his email address and ask if there's a special way one person can join whose a friend of yours.
Thanks, Seer. I tried that on Nancy's computer...and it was a "no go."

Gotta be some way to join this forum????
First, he has to bite the head off of a chicken and blame it on the President.
I'm impressed that they actually shut down new account sign ons!
and congratulations on having a friend :D that's more than some here can say
Ha ha! It's so easy that even a computer tyro such as I figured it out. It's right under your nose Frankie boy - just barely outside the box.......;-)
I went to the "Help" link at the bottom of the home page. There was a list of questions that you could click on, and I clicked on the one that said, "I'm having trouble signing up for an account. What do I do?" The answer read as follows:

"By clicking, "Join Now", you should be able to register for an Open Salon account. A screen should appear with various fields for you to fill in. Once it is completed, you should click, "Join Now", at which point your account set up will be complete. All of your user privileges can be accessed from the upper, right-hand corner of the Open Salon pages.

Some users may experience difficulty with our registration screen. If you are not able to see it, please go to this page."

The words "this page" were in blue, so it is a hyperlink. I clicked on it, and it took me back to the OS home page, but a box popped up that said, "Open Salon is a blog network with a built-in audience. Registration is temporarily closed. Please try again later."

I would take designanator's advice and contact Jake.
Oops, I guess I just repeated what Seer said!
Thanks Bill (funny comment, laughed my ass off); Tr ig (I’m impressed also); SkypixieO (still don’t see it, but if you wanna share...); and Jeanette (tried some of that stuff myself with the same results.)

Gonna try a message to Jake.
Frank, if he doesn't mind being Chicken Mãâàn until the embargo is lifted, I can whisper the password...
I believe that the "Join" control has been intentionally disabled. That may actually be my fault. For a long time I recommended that they stop taking new accounts in order to get some control over the spam. Whether due to my recommendation or not, it appears that the "join" feature is no longer available.

The problem was that well over 90 percent -- and maybe close to 100 percent -- of the new accounts were from spammers. Many spammers would create an account, post a bunch of spam, abandon that account, and then create yet another account and post more spam. By eliminating the supply of new accounts spammers are forced to use old accounts. But the old accounts are finite in number, and as we continue to delete active spammers eventually the supply of spam accounts will dwindle.

And this appears to be working. I don't have exact numbers, but a few months ago OS was getting several thousand spam posts every day -- so many that most of them didn't even show up in the "most recent" list. Even on a slow day there could be around two thousand spam posts. Today I would estimate that there are perhaps three or four hundred spam posts every day. That sounds like a lot, but it is possible to manually delete most of those accounts. Just today I have deleted over two hundred spam accounts, and the "most recent" queue is largely occupied by legitimate posts. A few months ago the "most recent" queue was so overrun with spam as to be worthless. Today, that queue is useable most of the time.

For your friend I would suggest you contact the editor or the new moderator; hopefully they will respond. It is an inconvenience, but with better spam management your friend will find Open Salon to be far more enjoyable than it was when the spammers were running the place. If you don't hear back from the editor or moderator in a reasonable amount of time let me know. I have a couple of other contacts that might be able to help.
