I live in Nashville, Tennessee, and I have a small business producing “demos,” or demonstration recordings, for songwriters. Most of my clients come to me over the internet, and I have recorded songs for folks in England, Sweden, Holland, Belgium, Australia, Canada, and of course, the U.S. A couple of days ago, a man called me from East Tennessee, and told me he had heard some demos I had done for a friend of his, and he wanted me to do some recordings of his songs. We had a pleasant enough conversation about his songwriting, but near the end of the phone call, he suddenly asked, “You’re not one of those Obama people, are you?”
Although I probably could be described as ‘one of those Obama people’, I quickly said, “I don’t really like to talk about politics,” because I needed the work and I didn’t see any point in discussing my opinion of the President with a total stranger. But after we hung up, I wondered, what possible connection could there be between my political leanings and whether or not I can do a good job recording his songs?
I have had this experience before, with clients that live in traditionally red states like Texas, Missouri, Louisiana, and Alabama wanting to know what my politics were. Or somehow, because I work in the country music industry, many people just assume that I am a country boy with conservative views about religion, politics, and life. One older man in Texas continually includes me in his mass emails of anti-Obama screeds and racially offensive cartoons. Hey, folks, just because I sometimes play the banjo, that doesn’t make me just like those guys in “Deliverance.”
Many people, especially here in the south, seem to hate Obama with a virulence that is way out of proportion to what he has done, or not done. I don’t think there is much doubt that this is due to the fact that they have never accepted the idea a black man could be elected President. Of course they deny this, and say that they hate him because of the bailout, the health care law, or because he’s coming for their guns (in the case of the real nutballs). But deep down, they hate him because he’s black, and smart, and not like them.
Back when George W. Bush was in office, I disliked many of his policies. But that did not cause me to stop seeing my friends or patronizing businesses who did happen to like him. But there is something different going on today. Our society has become so polarized that many people only socialize with those who share their views, if they socialize at all. These days, most folks don’t even know their neighbors names or what they do. People drive home from work listening to either Rush or NPR, but never both. At night, they sit down in front of a TV to watch either Fox News or MSNBC, depending on their politics.
And now, apparently, someone thinks that if I was a supporter of the President, it means I couldn’t possibly do a good job on his project.
That’s just messed up.

Way too many of the self-identified rednecks have a visceral reaction against a smart black man being in the White House.

Frank, all I'll say here is that I know what you're talking about. My husband walks that line just about every day.
Again, the South, and country music, is full of people like Charlie Daniels- listen to UNEASY RIDER again, now that is a Good Ol' Boy sangin' bout what he do know bes'!!!
post rated for honesty
I know of no one but full on conservatives who disrespect, even hate, others for their socio-political mindset. So, I think you have engaged in a false comparison by including liberals. We don't hate conservatives, we simply don't understand that kind of selfishness.
But the corporate overlords of OS obviously don't see it the same way I do, as well as many others, but thankfully not all, on this site. ll

"Why Right-Wing Christians Claim Obama As 'The Antichrist.'"

I feel like we've reverted to 1950 in this part of the country. It's just weird and stupid. Sadly, many of these people are my relatives. That makes for a complicated Sunday dinner. I can see what people stop communicating in this part of the world. You can't have a reasonable conversation. Someone is going to spout the word "Socialist!" at you with great venom. It's just the tiniest bit depressing. Sometimes, I feel like a stranger in a strange land.
It is sad, very sad.
Please note my screen name....I really do not belong here.
There's a parallel demographic at work too. A couple of years ago Bill Bishop published several chunks of his book, The Big Sort, on Slate. Its premise is that lots of Americans are moving to communities where the political tendency matches their own. Common ground, calm dialogue is increasingly hard to come by. it's a long story as to why though. But the shrillness of talk radio, Fox, and their ilk has something to do with it. You gave the right answer though.
There are haters every where. You just see what you want to see. Look at how Sharpton and Jackson talk about Herman Cain.
I attribute much of it to clever marketing, sort of like brand identification, but I mainly attribute it to the way religion has been effectively taken over. The religious are a ready-made class of people who are PROUD to call themselves "sheep" and have a belief system tailor made to polarity. God/Satan, Conservatives/Devils.
It really is good -vs- evil in their minds, and one CERTAINLY does not listen to "satan".
[the sad thing is, I'm actually in a northern state that went for Obama last time.. I can only imagine how it is in the south]

As for others who live surrounded by conservatives. I can tell you I live surrounded by liberals in Austin. It is fully assumed by anyone I meet that I must be a liberal. I like meeting people through friends, who are mostly liberal, but if I give a hint that I am not on board I am the outcast. It works both ways.
So what lie did Bush tell? If he had bad info that he used that's not a lie. If info was held from us for national security that's not a lie.
I have family in Tennessee and Georgia; some of them are Obama haters and racists too. Ugh. Great article.
They're "small, " feel safe that way and want you to be small too.

Michele Bachman's district. Way north. Just like what you describe.
We, Americans, have to deal with a moral issue: do we re-elect as President a yet unindicted war criminal, Barack Obama? The worst war crime is aggression against a foreign country. Obama continued and expanded the aggresions of George W. Bush in Iraq and in Afghanistan. He has also engaged in aggression in Pakistan, Somalia and Yemen.
Torture is a crime against humanity and a crime by our own laws and treaties. Barack Obama has used rendition to foreign countries, which are known to use torture, to obtain information from persons the US has detained. Obama has used extended solitary confinement and other deprivations on Pfc Bradley Manning to obtain information from him about Julian Assange.
The assassination of civilians who are not engaged in combat against the US, of American citizens, in a foreign country, without any due process of law, is a crime against our own laws and the laws of that foreign country.
All of these and others are high crimes committed by our President and candidate for re-election. This is not a matter of hatred for Barack Obama. This is a matter of love for the rule of law. It is a moral issue of the greatest consequence, for if Americans re-elect Barack Obama they will be giving approval to his crimes.
