Pirates of Somalia

Rate: 1 Flag

Piracy has typically had one kind of end.  A Navy tracks them back to their homes and then sends in their Marines to destroy the home base.  Happily, today we do not need much tracking.  Satellites have it covered.  Even better we don't need to send Marines anymore.  This is the mission the old B-52 was made for.  Anounce tomorrow that the Saudi ship is to be turned over to its crew and the Pirates gone within two hours or we begin carpet bombing Somali ports.  We will probably have to take out one to prove we mean business.  Pick one that is on the smaller end and where there is proof positive of pirates operating from it.  Then vanish the place.  Then announce that any further attacks will not see negotiations only assaults on the ships and the wholesale destruction of Somali ports.  End of piracy and only the SAS & SEALS are at risk.  Good luck guys.

I read and rated this post and started constructing a response that grew into a post of my own. You can read it here.
I would amend my first suggestion as follows. First bomb a swatch of empty desert outside the Port of Ely. It will get their attention, a B-52 arclight makes the ground jump for miles around. Next give a warning and leave a day or two for them to mull it over. If there is still no action then do the same strike this time in the water just outside the port. Few dhows will survive the ensuing wave action. Then issue the same warning. If the ships and crews are not free in two more days start in on the port itself.

We have been through all of this before, the President was Thomas Jefferson and the location was the Barberry Coast. In that instance the Marines went in. We don't need them now, nor should we risk their lives.

And avoid linking the removal of piracy to solving Somlia's many problems. Indeed there is more than enough reason for us to want to help them. But right now the issue is pirates, hostage takers, thieves. Stop that without any linkage to the rest.
