Philadelphia - Arlen Specter has always been known as a political maverick, never one to tow the party line; whichever party. One issue that he has consistently supported, medical marijuana, has become a very prescient topic. Now there is active medical marijuana legislation in his home state of Pennsylvania, HB 1393, that is gaining momentum.
While Specter’s views on medical cannabis have always been supportive, he re-endorsed the issue at the PA Progressive Summit last week, public opinion has reached a strong and clear majority on the issue as well.
In 2010 medical marijuana is not controversial, it is mainstream. Americans favor cannabis access and other prohibition reforms at record levels across race, class and gender. For the man who switched party affiliation to win popular support in a tough primary and then a general election, medical marijuana is a smart populist platform.
