Bio
Observations From the Swamp Many folks think we live in the nether regions of the earth here in Toledo, Ohio. However, Toledo is the birthplace of jazz great, Art Tatum, not to mention many other distinguished and accomplished AfrAms (African-Americans) who often remain unheralded and unrecognized in their home town. This swamp is a petrie dish swarming with undiscovered talent that the world may never know because there are too many slimey creatures down here in the swamp pulling down anyone who tries to climb out and come out into the warmth of the sun. This diva climbed into the swamp with one purpose - to rid the world of slime!

Closure: Now we know who killed him

Rate: 20 Flag

Two days ago, my brother James Chapman was brutally murdered at his home in Columbus. His body lay in his yard all afternoon, his faithful dog Popeye lying next to it.  In just two days, James' murderer was arrested and confessed to the crime. A foster child of James' dear friend, Arnie, 20 year-old Jamie was so loved by my brother he would forego his favorite pasttime, eating out at nice restaurants, to have money to give to Jamie for lunch and bus fare to get to school. Jamie was part of our family. My sister Debra bought him a cell phone when his died and had planned to get him a bus pass this week.  James had a routine of picking Jamie up on the to rehearse with his actors. Jamie spent time during those rehearsals playing games on James' iPhone 4. After rehearsal, James dropped Jamie off at one of several places.  The day James was murdered Jamie went home with him. But they never got inside. For reasons unknown, Jamie beat and stabbed and possibly shot James to death when they exited from James' car in his garage. Jamie took James' iPhone, his Rolex watch, three credit cards, rings, and other jewelry and left him dead in his back yard.  We may never know why James was killed. But thanks to the exemplary work of homicide detectives in the Columbus Police Department, we at least know who murdered him.

Finally figured how to post from my iPhone, the one James gave me. Please go to James H. Chapman's page and read my brother's work. His poem about our now deceased father is classic. My mother is handling this better than anyone. Thanks for the support of my OS friends during this time. Tributes on Facebook are on my sister Debrar Chapman's page and mine, Geoyce Chatman. I may not respond to comments right away. We are having a memorial service for James Saturday, August 14, at Advent UCC, his church. Not sure of time. My brothers John and Greg are coming from California and Mississippi respectively. And my nephew, Sgt John Burrell is coming from his base in El Paso, Texas.

One last thing. James helped the hi
Sleds and received awards for his work he lived in a neighborhood that is poor. The people in his neighborhood came forward to assist the police telling them James was a good neighbor and they wanted to help. My sister inherited James' theatre company and will continue his work. My brother Joseph is the CFO and has a MBA. I'll go help train actors and I'm thinking of volunteering to be tour director to travel with the actors on the road. We are determined to get James' shows on Broadway. When you see James' face on his OS page, you'll see why we were called twins" even though I'm nine years older. He turned 50 in April and said he didn't expect to be alive by fall. He had a death wish because of the unbelievable injustice he suffered just because he was gay (I'll write about that in another post). Now. he's at peace. My siblings and I all agree that when the muscular man that he loved like a son was beating and stabbing him in his stomach and head, the only words James would have said to him were, "I forgive you."
James helped the homeless - sorry about the correction of my bad typing made by my iPhone. Thank you, OS. I love you!
Working has kept me away from here for a while Diva and will so more today.
I am sorry to read this but am happy to hear that your brother's work will be carried onward. Hugs girl. A brother dying is a hard lick to take. I hope healing and peace comes your way soon. For all involved in this tragety.
I have been thinking of you all week.
May God lift your spirits towards peace in your hearts.
For God so loved the world that he gave his only son.
Now James has been given to him also.
I pray for all of you.

Murdered for his kindness...

I am so sorry but am gratified that it is not an unsolved crime. My best to you and your family.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
(speechless!!!) I'm so very sorry for your loss. Sending lots of love and light your way. E
What a terrible tragedy all around, including for the murderer who threw away his life too. My heart goes out to you and the rest of your family.
Oh Diva, there are no words, only love, prayer and blessings. You have mentioned James to me before. I am so sorry. God Bless, Blu. R
I'm so, so sorry. It sounds like the world lost a wonderful man.
I am so very sorry.
That's horrific, Geoyce. I am so very sorry.
What a tragic loss, for you, for your family, for the city and community of Columbus, and indeed, for the world.

You have my deepest condolences.
Oh, I am so very sorry. Prayers are with you and your family.
How tragic, Diva. A true tragedy. I read your brother's poem, and the man had chops. From that alone I know he was sensitive and caring, and from what you tell of him he was probably a saint. And, yes, his face and yours are spittin' images. I feel deep sorrow for your loss, dear.
All Best to you and your family. I'm stunned at the composure of your writing. r.
My heart is broken for you, Diva. I have but one brother and I don't know what I'd do if he was taken from me. Even knowing who did the murder, it's still got to be the most painful thing you've been asked to cope with for a while. It's simply tragic, for all involved, and maybe especially for the young man who committed this evil. Know you're in my thoughts and prayers. If you need to dump, I'm here. D
I am sorry for your loss, but it feels like your brother's spirt will go on. I will go an dread, and remember, his poetry.
Words are failing me, Geoyce, and my tears are blinding my eyes.
It would have been much easier to read this post had the killer been a total stranger. This is unconscionable. I pray for all of you and may God rest his benevolent soul.

Lezlie
