- Observations From the Swamp
Many folks think we live in the nether regions of the earth here in Toledo, Ohio. However, Toledo is the birthplace of jazz great, Art Tatum, not to mention many other distinguished and accomplished AfrAms (African-Americans) who often remain unheralded and unrecognized in their home town. This swamp is a petrie dish swarming with undiscovered talent that the world may never know because there are too many slimey creatures down here in the swamp pulling down anyone who tries to climb out and come out into the warmth of the sun. This diva climbed into the swamp with one purpose - to rid the world of slime!

There's a big difference between a job and a calling
Had a 47-minute conversation with my supervisor last night who called after I sent her an email detailing my grievances.
As I suspected, my team/… Read full post »

If I get tarred&feathered&runoutatown, you'll know why!
I attended church with my mother Sunday. It was my Mother's Day present to her. I was also curious to see what her anti-gay pastor would say about President Obama's support of marriage equality. But before he spoke, during prayer ministry a female associate minister mentioned the President indi… Read full post »
Beating up bullies - my dirty little secret
Teachers' kids automatically become bully bait. And my
grandmother, Mrs. Jefferson, was the dreaded sixth grade teacher at
W. D. Spigner.
So, when we were in fifth grade I decided it was time to take care
of my main bully, Sylvia Portis, before we got to sixth
grade. One day I picked… Read full post »

Will Obama change Evangelical blacks' view of homosexuality?
President Obama's support of "marriage equality," not gay marriage, may turn the tide of opinion regarding this issue among black Evangelicals. According to an article in the Daily Beast, negative attitudes towards gays among African-Amerians went from 67% negative in 2008 to 47% negative in just fou… Read full post »

I'm 60% human, according to the constitution, but 100% whole
According to the Constitution I'm only 60% human. (That "Negroes are only 3/5 of a man" statement was never removed.)
According to some men, I'm supposed to be subservient. According to some cultural dictates, I'm not supposed to be attractive to the opposite sex.
According to… Read full post »

Accused of highjacking, one more reason to stay away
Someone named Spirit Love who joined OS for the sole purpose of
maligning my deceased brother alienated me from a place I felt safe

So I've stayed away, sporadically coming back to post once in a
while and visit with old friends. It's good to know… Read full post »
My big Dick ride into adolescence - "Thank-you, Mr. Clark!"
"American Bandstand" was my conduit to my generation. There I learned all the '60s dances, rocked and rolled, and got soul before soul was a train. I twisted, mashed potatoes, boogalooed, and jerked in private because I wasn't allowed to dance. Not even at my school's prom. My rural community had… Read full post »
Mom was Ann Romney, Grandma was Hilary Clinton, I'm neither
My mother was a stay-at-home mom, unusual for AfrAm women. But it was the fifties and it was all the rage.
Actually, that's not why Mom was a homemaker. She was a homemaker because her goal in life was to be a wife (of a preacher) and a mother. So, at… Read full post »

Thanks, OSers, for demanding justice for Trayvon Martin

Foodie Tuesday: salmon patties @ Ruby's
Delicious is not a strong enough word to describe the taste of Ruby Kitchen's Tuesday special, Salmon Patties and Rice. Scrumptuous, an epicurean delight, tastily sensuous, or even damn good don't do this dish justice.
I'm a southern belle with the delicate taste buds of someone who thinks chitlings… Read full post »
