MY RECENT POSTS

My comrades at work are still talking about these muffins that I brought in last week. I'm always a bit nervous when I make up a new recipe, so I certainly appreciated nods of approval as they gobbled them up

Thanks to all those who took time to vote for my Shrimp Pizza recipe in The Great Leftover Challenge:  Kitchen Bounty: Pizza with Shrimp. It was voted Number One!

My first Jell-O mold!

Oh, we're all "acquainted" with Jell-O. Notice I didn't say we're all on friendly terms. Or even best friends. Jell-O is something that has quite literally "slipped" into our lives and down our childhood mouths. And memory.

A can and a pan. It's amazing what one can create with those two items!

I had intended to make a small pork roast with this dish, but the stewed tomatoes with the fluffy dumplings turned out to be a meal in itself. This could easily

Shrimp Pizza

One of the advantages of working in a grocery store is that I have the entire shift to figure out what I want for dinner. I roam the aisles viewing what's on sale, what's fresh, and putting it all together in a menu.

Lately, I’ve been

Basic Pizza--Foodie Tuesday

Each time I make pizza, I'm reminded of its total beauty. It's a food we devour with our eyes! I mean, just focus on that photograph. Bubbly, browned cheese with fresh mushrooms peeking up. Pepperoni tinged crisp. And, oh, the peppers. Not the diced, masticated kind from

Asparagus lasagna is a joyous welcome to celebrate spring and the end of winter. Tender new spears of asparagus and earthy mushrooms sing the praises of a long-anticipated thaw. I could certainly see it on an Easter menu, especially as an appetizer.

I approached this recipe with apprehension. Even trepidation. "Bread" from just flour and water? It was just too easy.

I had learned my lesson in 2006 from the "no-knead" bread recipe that appeared in the New York Times which "/… Read full post »

Did I have you at "bacon?" Or maybe it was that word 'infused." What a lovely thought: a bacon infusion. Someone call 9-1-1! Surely a cure for anything!

As you may notice, I've been on a pasta kick lately (and I still have brandy pasta

My New Poem: "Destinations"

Destinations

I need a new car

So I no longer go very far.

I stick to well-know streets--

Avoid off-beaten

Paths where once I loved to go.

I'm now content to take it slow.

I'm thinking of a little scooter.

Two wheels, not… Read full post »

My New Poem: The End of the World

The Mayan "End of Days" is scheduled for December 21, 2012 around
11:11 a.m.

12-21-12

They say the world

Will end--

They even have an exact date

That's nothing short of approximate.

It makes me sad to think

EVERYONE will become extinct.

Pasta with Lemon--Foodie Tuesday

Buttery, slippery, garlicky, salty--that's how I like my pasta. Liberal shaves of a great Parmesan and almost always a few grates of fresh lemon zest. Sometimes a pinch of red pepper flakes. The recipe below combines all those ingredients, but ramps up the lemon for a

My New Poem: Treasure

Treasure

The dandelion

Is my friend--

Incantation

Of the sun--

That interrupts

The green--

A golden

Punctuation

That causes

Pause.

It's such a lowly weed

That forces us to see

Ambiguity--

And conformity.

An earth-bound

Constellatio

Ode To Joy

I'm getting old.
My body

Hurts. A kink
In the neck--

Fingers, stiff.
The arch of my left foot

Often aches like
 My lower back.

Sometimes the hips
Need a tin-man… Read full post »

Chicken and Dumplings--Foodie Tuesday

These dumplings are light and airy, not heavy

and glutenous--and certainly not "biscuit-like."

While chicken and dumplings is a meal I did not grow up with, it's one I plan to grow old with. I really didn't discover it until mid-age. Think of it as

Chicken Livers with Pasta

Chicken livers. Either you love 'em or you hate 'em.

"Liver" is one of those words with which we have a love/hate relationship. I had my first chicken livers when I worked in a restaurant during high school. I loved 'em. The texture was silky and… Read full post »

LIFE SUPPORT

I need a poem--

Baked eggs offering their warm, yellow yolk like the sun itself. Perfect
to take off the chill of a winter's morn.

Apple Pie with Whisky--Foodie Tuesday

The whisky in this recipe is nuanced, not overt. Its smokiness blends beautifully with the apples and spices.

Inspired by the "Little House on the Prairie" books when I was in grade school, the first thing I ever attempted to bake was an apple pie. I

My New Breville Counter-Top Oven

This isn't your ordinary "toaster oven."

For about a year now, I've had my eye on a Breville counter-top, convention oven. With some Christmas money, I finally purchased it a week ago and finally set it up a few days ago. I couldn't be happier.
