Front Porch Republic
We live in a world characterized by a flattened culture and increasingly meaningless freedoms. Little regard is paid to the necessity for those overlapping local and regional groups, communities, and associations that provide a matrix for human flourishing. We’re in a bad way, and the spokesmen and spokeswomen of both our Left and our Right are, for the most part, seriously misguided in their attempts to provide diagnoses, let alone solutions.

Erstwhile Porcher Caleb Stegall has a fine piece in The Humane Vision of Wendell Berry where he discusses the difference between convivial and instrumental uses of technology, the former where technology is made to serve us and the latter where we are made to serve it. From New Jersey comes the story of a man who implanted magnets in his arm in order to be able to hold his iPod while he works out or whatever. Self-mutilation in order to better serve our devices? Nothing convivial about that. If it is a “new trend of integrating humans and technology” it is hard to see this one ending well.
