On News of Your Demise

Rate: 25 Flag

The news just now that you are dead

Sends thoughts careening through my head.

I feel relief yet sorrow, too;

Your talents triumphed in my stead.

But blame goes back a ways before;

Convenience we settled for.

And lived the lie for all those years

Until you entered through our door.

And there it was as plain as day,

Our truth no more could we gainsay,

And nature then played out its hand,

The game was up; we had to pay.

So now you're gone while we remain,

Dazed and struggling to refrain

From showing our extent of pain,

From showing our extent of pain.

I'm not sure if this poem discusses an actual death, but it sure covers the barrage of conflicting emotions one can feel upon a departure.

Lezlie
Actually it does, L. Thanks for being the first to stop by this nonsnowy woods.
This is not a happy parody. Aren't parodies supposed to be happy?
I don't know why they should, Chicken Maaan. But maybe with this one it depends on your point of view at any given moment.
This is sort of the way I felt when Don Hutson died.
Dutch, a personal betrayal is very much a dezth. Thank you for commenting.

Your words are kind, Lady. I only pretend to be a poet, and I am grateful when real poets give me glimpses of the magical place they have found.
a mask well worn... so calm and repressed and breaking at the seams...
That's a strong line, catch. Thanks for the visit.
Interestingly enough, the downstairs neighbor
in my rooming house is named Robert Frost.
He is 50, shaves his head, and has a 20 yr old girlfriend.
Talk about a parody.

Death brings out the poetic in a poet or
pretend poet's
soul.
Whichever you are, you give good ambivalence.
Also, this is the first time i have run across the word
"gainsay" on OS in 3 yrs.
I pinched it here from a political blog, Mr. Emmerling. Had to look it up, first, to be sure.
So nice to find a new poet on his first post. Beautiful homage, I am looking forward to reading more. Thanks for stopping by my poetry page.

I've long been an admirer of yours, Poetess. You honor me with your visit.
My motto? If you're gonna steal, steal from the best. Well done.
My gratitude is yours, Tom. Borrowing from blues singers who occasionally are wont to say, "I didn't steal those songs. I admired them so much I made them mine."
Roger, you have been an inspiration.
theft is the way of the Artist and the Genius.
for example, Bob Dylan and Einstein.
what else are memes, ideas,
out there for than to be taken in,
coddled,
paid scrutiny,
and released back into the Noosphere or collective Consciousness
or Oversoul or whatever?

improve.

Nature's imperative............
Lovely poem. I look forward to reading more.
Well Frosty Funk, if that is your real name, I like it!
I love that name. In high school there was a basketball player named`Edward F. Ucker.
Honest.
He no wore Australian UGG shoes. I saw the `UGG ad here.
I knew a vet while I was in DC's VAMC. Every day he's say:
`
Why weren't you in the morgue today? He's always ask that.
I'd respond . . .
`
Because I haven't written my obit yet. He'd say`Write it now.
apology for two comments.
I came back to reread again.
This poem pierced to a core.
You were born with a `caul.
I love your Bio. Ay, a cranky.
You write as a sliver sword.
Words penetrate to heart,
bone, marrow, and heal.
I look at the folk who've left their comments and have no words that they haven't already written.
Lady Love, there's nothing new under the sun, it's all been done.

I'm not a poetry person but I do enjoy those I stumble across that resonate emotionally and this is one of them :).

Welcome to OS Frosty :).
