Julie and Julia - the first major movie from a Salon blog!

The most famous of the original Salon.com user blogs is about to become a movie. A real movie, as in a major motion picture. Nora Ephron as director/screenwriter. Meryl Streep as Julia Child, Amy Adams as blogger Julie Powell, and not to forget the husbands, Stanley Tucci as Paul Child and Chris Messina as Eric Powell.

No, not kidding.

 

 

 "Nora Ephron adapts Julie Powell's autobiographical book Julie and Julia: 365 Days, 524 Recipes, 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen with this Columbia Pictures production starring Amy Adams as an amateur chef who decide to cook every recipe in a cookbook from acclaimed celebrity chef Julia Child (played by Meryl Streep) in order to chronicle it in a blog over the course of a year..."

Yes, it was a Salon Blog of the early "Ohs." (We are not calling the decade the "oughts" are we?) Book came out a few years back and is still on Amazon... The blog itself is still up in the original location: blogs.salon.com/0001399 it turns out, so the date can be checked, and the project and blog started on Sunday, August 25, 2002. 

Meryl Streep! But before we buy popcorn, it's time to figure out... who should be cast in the movie version of YOUR blog?

I also didn't know the blog was on Salon.

I just watched the trailer (hadn't seen it before) and I'm trying to get past Streep doing the Dan-Ackroyd-as-Julia-Child accent. I know there's no way around it - the woman's voice was funny. I hope it's not too much of a cariacature, though.

As for my blog...I want to be played by Debra Winger.

I remember following her blog religiously, it was about the food, but it wasn't about the food. I remember being so happy for her when she announced that indeed there would be a book as so much of the blog was about her wish to escape the tedium of cubicle mundanity.

Can't wait to see the movie.

I'm with Stella, this is a movie I look forward to. It looks delightful. I think we can trust Meryl Steep to not make Julia Child foolish and Amy Adams should be good in this.

Wow--I didn't know it was a Salon blog. I had remembered reading about the book and now it's a movie. I am sure it will be good with Meryl Streep and Amy Adams.

I saw this movie a couple of months ago in Kansas City in one of our local theaters. It was there for a trial period so that guests could watch it and rate it before it came out. I really enjoyed it. I liked the characters' development in the movie. I was disppointed that Julie didn't actually get to meet Julia. Because of this movie I found OpenSalon....and now I'm hooked on it.

I really enjoyed this trailer and hope the movie is as good. I do a wonderful Julia Child imitation and somewhere I have video of me preparing rabbit completely in her "persona"! I think Streep is a natural to play her, and anything that has Nora Ephron's name attached to it gets my attention. Now, would that I could be so lucky to have my blog become a movie (even though my life is almost one already), the actress I think who could play me would be......Sharon Stone (before her crazy woman days) or Jamie Lee Curtis (because of the short hair). Otherwise, Freaky Troll. She would do a nice job!

Things really started to take off with her when the New York Times did an article about her project. Soon after it was the classic, one thing leads to another sort of thing. After she was "discovered" she occasionally popped up in the NYTimes with an article in the food section or at least once I recall an article in the magazine section, but haven't noticed anything by her for a while.

i went to the premiere of this movie last week, despite the projector breaking down four times, it was actually very good! (apart from the ending, but then if you've read the original blog, well, i can see why Child didn't like Powell! such a potty mouth!!!) All in all, i laughed, and smiled and although being a 20 something Brit I had never heard of Child prior, Meryl delivered an amazing performance!!!

I head via the grape-vine [no food pun intended] about how the blog here came to the attenti0n of Amanda Hesser the NYTimes food writer who wrote the initial profile in August 2003 -- 6 years ago -- and how that NYTimes story led MAGICALLY to a book deal and then a movie deal. My source tells me: "I'm not sure how Hesser got wind of what Powell was doing, but it certainly had nothing to do with Powell contacting the Times herself, as Julie was far far removed that time from having anything to do with having a PR person at that time.... it was probably the OS blog readers themselves who contacted Hesser and ''egged'' her on to do a story, [no food pun intended]..... there were reportedly some fans of Julie's blog back then who would do things like call in to The Daily Show to DEMAND that Jon Stewart have her on. They had also been haranguing the editors at the NYT Dining Section for months. "

So now you know .....the rest of the story!

I saw the movie and LOVED it. It was inspiring and just goes to show what passion can do for you. Another book similar to this story started with a blog called "Save Karyn"...A very funny book about a girl in Brooklyn who goes broke, and people on the blog site send in way over $25,000 to pay off her credit card. How neat is that?
