Reading Janelle Brown's Novel
It was in the huge grab-bag book pile, with all the multiple review copies that are shipped to Salon. The book reviewers already had their copy. I saw her name. Janelle was at Salon when I came aboard. I remember when she interviewed me about the AOL volunteer moderator lawsuit for… Read full post »
"Walking through the wind shadow." Very short, very simple, minimal ambient sound -- speakers not needed. (c) by me, shot with my Canon still camera, lightly edited via iMovie, uploaded to Flickr, then grabbed embed code for here. Nothing, almost.
...you gonna linger here for five dollars or best offer?

"Long pictures" or "Moving stills"
So the big April revolution was short videos for Flickr. There was a lot of controversy from photo purists at first, but...
A little art form appears to be finding its place. Tiny video clips where motion is almost like texture or… Read full post »
and those handset stickers are so naive -- the whole hivemind communications network is "tapped" doncha know!
The arid American west is an ancient canvas for messages.
This one, someplace over Eastern California or Western Arizona (flying from San Diego to Albuquerque), could be designed to bring the big shiny ships in. Or maybe the roadmakers had an inkling that someday… Read full post »
Will Open Salon be catnip for photobloggers?
Many avid Flickr users also have external photographer's blogs to showcase their work with other color scheme or layouts, with shopping carts for selling their work. Photo fans may want to applaud a favorite photographer with a small token of fiscal esteem rather than purchase a print, something th… Read full post »
We did not vote for your penis
Dear Mr. Elected Official,
Some of us -- presumably more than half of us -- voted you into office. You convinced enough of us to put you there as a public servant, subject to the same rules we follow. Remember?
Even those of us who did… Read full post »
OK, no HBO. So it goes. Meanwhile, the Wires in my life have to do with an obscure flickr group where artists from varous countries make photographs with wire patterns in them. Oh those camera-wielding fools. Here's one I submitted to the group:

When I was in a theatre company in the 1980s we had a holiday from rehearsal on Oscar night. We were part of the industry, sort of. Today I don't seem to care about big films... Here's very low-key homemade movie, in an awesome social video player. Look at it in… Read full post »
Three models for rating user content
I was looking at our thumbs up and thumbs down choices, and then contrasting that to the granularity of friendship description when we add a contact here. We don't have a lot of nuance in rating content, but we have complex and somewhat mysterious friend-ranking. This seemed odd, and… Read full post »
Photo - Lava flows into the sea by moonlight, Hawai'i
OK, for now it's my icon too... shot this in Hawaii.

Â
Oooh, it got so tiny! On edit: I fixed the HTML and made it 500 wide!
I loved hiking out to where the lava was entering the sea, and sitting there as it grew dark.
Prima Ballerinas of Monterey, California
How can I prevent this from getting so small?

Looks like I have to type in "copyright Gail Williams 2003"
into the body for a photocredit.

Next I directly edited the HTML of this post to show the very same image at the actual size it was uploaded. There we go...… Read full post »

I love quirky signs. They are such a popular fixture at internet photo sites... what about hosting a show me a sign day at Open Salon?
What am I doing for the high holy days of beer geekdom?
I've got a family and friends event Saturday, and a tentative plan for hiking on Monday. Sunday is where the great seasonal celebration kicks in. Yes, February in the Bay Area is Strong Beer Month. The grass is newly green on the hills, bare branches… Read full post »
Edit wars. Sock puppets. These things can make you toss and turn at night. A recent article about Wikipedia edit wars, from SF Weekly, has an odd whiff of vengeance about it, along with some amazing tales and questions, as it delves into the shady world of gang content-policing. Â

What's so special about YouTube?
They do a good job of explaining embed code.  This is one of my own that I uploaded there a while ago.

This looks gorgeous! It's so clean and white and enticing. Great job on the look of the place! Now to poke around. What fun.
How about a little video I made...

That didn't work for me. Trying again....
