Drop The Birth Certificate Fight; Concentrate On Real Issues

Rate: 7 Flag

Born in the USA

Either officials in Hawaii are putting their reputations and their jobs on the line as part of a massive conspiracy to cover up the fact that Barack Obama isn't qualified to be president of the United States or he was, indeed, born in the USA.

Once again, the state's top health official has issued a brief statement affirming that the record indicates that Obama was, indeed, born in Hawaii.

"Birthers," who tend to be right wing and who consider themselves ultra-patriotic, will not, I am certain, appreciate the following analogy. But their continued public denial of Obama's birth status is akin to some Muslim who still don't believe Osama bin Ladin was behind the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack. Both groups are desperately holding onto what they believe to be a fact and won't let go. It's like a guy hopped up on drugs who has been mortally shot but keeps coming because he doesn't realize he's already dead. This issue is dead and shouldn't keep coming. Sooner or later, like the wounded drug addict, the argument will collapse.

The point is, the chief justice of the Supreme Court has sworn in Obama after declining to hear an appeal of a lower court's ruling dismissing as having no standing a suit challenging Obama's right to run for president based on his place of birth. Remember, it was the Supreme Court that in 2000 issued a ruling in the Bush v Gore case that decided the outcome of that presidential election. If the birthers are going to reject the Supreme Court's decision about Obama's place of birth then they should have rejected the legitimacy of George W. Bush's election. But they didn't. The nation accepted the decision and moved on.

There are a multitude of serious issues that face the nation right now. Focusing on this sideshow diverts attention from things that really matter.

Give it a rest. Barack Obama is the president of the United States. If you don't like his policies, then challenge them. But like after the 2000 Florida presidential was challenged - it's time to move on.

It's worth noting that the constitution states, "No person, except a natural born citizen . . . shall be eligible to the Office of President. . ."

It does not say that the person has to be born on US soil. Natural citizen has not been defined. There are many people who were born with US citizenship, but not in the US, McCain being one.

Obama, undisputedly, acquired US citizenship at birth through his mother. That would have been true even if he'd been born in Kenya.

Even if the "birthers" proved that Obama was born outside the US, there'd still be a good argument that he meets the criteria set forth in the constitution for President.
I belive that for the most part the "birthers" don't like the idea of an African-American President. This birthplace issue is pure racism.
Personally, I hope birthers continue to openly identify themselves. That means that I can immediatley consign them to the category of "lunatic".
I think democrats should pay that woman who went off on Castle to go to every town hall meeting of every republican who is in a swing district.

And then they could run ads saying, look at who so and so associates with if the rep doesn't do what Castle did and say, you're wrong.
If he was not born on U.S. territory, then I think that he would have a problem, like Arnold, but it is a moot point now it would seem, unless there is something really, really weird about who he is, which I have no reason to believe is the case, and it seems a little late now.
The original point of that line in the Constitution most people think was to block Hamilton and more generally avoid counterintellignece problems with foreign influence, but that would be much less applicable to Obama even if he had been born outside the United States, which does not of course seem to be the case at all.
The provision itself is reasonable, just not this application, which is a distraction.
They'll fight even harder now that it's a proven fact, because they have faith they are right.
This is not just racism against Obama. There is also an element of racism against asian americans. Note that the officials in Hawaii are japanese americans. A lot of white americans do not accept asian americans as real americans. Hence they will not take Janice Okubo or Dr. Chiyome Fukino's word for it. It's easy for these people to imagine that there is some kind of deep conspiracy surroundling Obama's birth- because in their minds all non whites are suspect anyways.
Malusinka,

You are wrong on several points. Natural citizen has been defined, several times in fact. What is says is a natural citizen is what the law says it is at the time you were born.

Obama is a citizen because he was born in HI. What nationality his parents were does not matter. He was born on US soil and not of diplomatic parents. Had he been born in Kenya he would not have been a citizen because the rule, when he was born, was that one parent had to be a citizen and have lived in the US for 10 years, 5 of which had to be after the age of 16. Obama's mother gave birth to him at 18. To meet the 5 year rule she would have had to be 21 when she gave birth to him at the minimum.

McCain even though he was born in Panama meets the requirement for natural born citizen because of the law at the time of his birth.

So if the Birthers prove he was born outside the US, his goose is cooked.

Roger, where did you get that piece of racist BS? If I was a betting man I would put my money on the fact that they are constitutional liberitarians.

Tony, if you are talking about the woman in the video, they build nice houses for people like her. They have rubber walls.
They'll fight even harder now that it's a proven fact, because they have faith they are right.

"OMG, the conspiracy runs even deeper than we'd believed before!"
Drop all the fake issues, including Sarah.
I'm afraid icemilkcoffee might be right on this one. Behold, the last gasp of the dying white male patriarchy - they are NOT GOING QUIETLY.
This is SUCH a non-issue. But I agree with Stellaa. It's being used to divert us from what really matters.
