Paul Haggis quits Scientology over homophobic stance

Rate: 8 Flag

After 35 years of being a member of the Church of Scientology, Paul Haggis, the Oscar-winning Canadian director of Crash and Million Dollar Baby, has publicly resigned from the Church in protest against its homophobic stance. In a letter made public by The Hollywood Reporter, Mr. Haggis is sharply critical of the Church's refusal to denounce statements made by its San Diego branch in support of Proposition 8:

"As you know, for ten months now I have been writing to ask you to make a public statement denouncing the actions of the Church of Scientology of San Diego. Their public sponsorship of Proposition 8, a hate-filled legislation that succeeded in taking away the civil rights of gay and lesbian citizens of California – rights that were granted them by the Supreme Court of our state – shames us...I called and wrote and implored you, as the official spokesman of the church, to condemn their actions. I told you I could not, in good conscience, be a member of an organization where gay-bashing was tolerated....Despite all the church's words about promoting freedom and human rights, its name is now in the public record alongside those who promote bigotry, intolerance, homophobia and fear....I am only ashamed I waited this many months to act. I hereby resign my membership of the Church of Scientology."

You're a good man, Paul Haggis. Thanks for standing up.

Bad news for Jada Pinkett-Smith. The jig is up, dear. How's a about plate of freid clams for lunch?
Wow, it's amazing that anyone in that mind-control organization, much less someone who's been in it for 35 years, has the ability to rebel.
So its just these last few months that Scientology's anti-gay stance has disturbed Haggis? What about the previous 34 years? I doubt "the church" has RECENTLY become homophobic..... Well, regardless, someone had better tell Tom Cruise, et all.....
Paul Haggis is a hero. I've been following Scientology's potential dissolution in France all summer. They've kept it remarkably quiet. Interesting that the final outcome of that trial will be announced tomorrow and Haggis' announcement was today. I just wrote a blog about this.
i read this earlier today, gay. i find myself fascinated by scientology - like, people REALLY believe in xenu? cause thats weird, man. WAY weirder than believing in god. especially if you think of god as a force in the cosmos, or the cosmos themselves, or the energy that gives us all inner light.

but xenu? man oh man.

i did some more reading today after his letter, and it appears the "church" is imploding.
Christopher Reeve wrote about his really interesting observations of Scientology from the days when he was a young actor in New York. Fantastic reading.

This reprinting of the letter Haggis wrote is equally interesting, considering the core value of the letter.

Whatever Scientology is all about, I can't figure it out. They do get in the headlines, though, don't they?
I read “Dianetics” years ago. Although we all may suffer from PTSD to some degree, I had trouble buying into Scientology’s curative process. Since I could not get beyond this core belief, I never moved forward into researching their spiritual belief system.

Apparently, their support of Prop 8 is having a negative impact. In the short term, I doubt this will significantly impact their position.
