Thanks to an amendment introduced this year by Morocco and Mali on behalf of African and Islamic countries, the United Nations has approved the decision to replace the term "sexual orientation" with "discriminatory reasons on any basis" in the resolution on extrajudicial, summary, and arbitrary executions, this despite the fact that references to other minority groups, including human rights defenders, religious and ethnic minorities, and homeless children, remain in the anti-execution resolution. In other words, the United Nations has, for all intents and purposes, told homophobic countries that it does not endorse the protection of LGBT people against hate-motivated murder.
If I am to draw any positivity from this story, it is that the United Nations votes on the anti-execution resolution every two years, so let's hope that in two years from now, another vote will reverse this absurdity.
