For L'HOMO, a special edition of Linda magazine, high-profile Dutch sportsmen discuss their support for gay athletes, and one of the men featured, gymnast Jeffrey Wammes, took the opportunity to reveal that he is gay.
Born in Utrecht in 1987, Mr. Wammes is one of the biggest talents in gymnastics in the Netherlands and recently finished in fourth place on the vault at the 2011 European Championships. With an eye on the 2012 Olympics in London, England, he is also an ambassador of the 2013 European Youth Olympic Festival (EYOF), which will take place in his hometown. You can catch him, along with some of the other jocks featured in L'HOMO, in the short video (in Dutch), below, of the issue launch.
Radio Netherlands reported that Mr. Wammes wanted to clarify public questioning of his sexuality:
"There was already a lot of speculation about whether or not I fell for boys or girls. To me it has nothing to do with sport or how I perform. But when I was asked to do this, I made it clear straight away how things were and that's that."
In case you're wondering about Mr. Wammes ethnic origins, his father, Theo, is a Dutchman and his mother, Ciska, is a quarter Surinamese and a quarter Antillean.
