I'm a big fan of public artworks that remind humans of their potential to terrorize each other under the pretext of any number of ideologies or religious beliefs. Case in point, a monument of flowers spelling the daunting phrase "ZU SPÄT" (TOO LATE) was officially inaugurated Wednesday at Morzinplatz in Vienna's city centre. The installation, by Carola Dertnig and Julia Rode, includes a small footbridge to allow for a more contemplative look at the work.
Located just a few metres from the former Viennese headquarters of the Gestapo, where a current exhibition focuses on the crimes of the secret state police, the artwork commemorates the tens of thousands of Austrian sexual minorities who were murdered by the German Third Reich until 1945. The installation is on display until October 31, 2012.
