Bio
I'm actually a jack of all trades. I have lived in two Civil War-ear forts, won college teaching awards, and successfuly handled nearly thirty attempted suicide situations. I've optioned a couple of screenplays, worked as a bodyguard, and met more rap stars than I EVER wanted to meet. Like all of the best Generalissimos I have no actual military experience.

Egypt's Unlucky Pigs

Rate: 3 Flag

The Egyptian response to the Swine Flu outbreak has been to order the literal extermination of ALL, yes every last one, of the pigs in Egypt.  That seems vaguely Old Testament and the tone of all of the media reports on this action is one of bemused condescension.  “Oh, those poor ignorant Egyptians…” the reports from the BBC, the New York Times, and other normally insightful news sources seem to chuckle, “…they just don’t realize that this version of the swine flu is so dangerous precisely because you can’t catch it from pigs”.

But the Egyptians aren’t stupid and they realize the epidemiological characteristics of the flu.  They aren’t slaughtering the pigs to keep people from catching Swine Flu; they are slaughtering pigs to keep Muslims from slaughtering Christians.

Egypt is of course about ninety percent Muslim with a Coptic Christian minority making up about ten percent of the population and they’re the ones that raise the hogs.  What the Egyptian government is concerned about is that when Egyptians begin to get sick and die, and if this variety is half as virulent as it appears they will eventually, the government does not want the Muslim Brotherhood to have an excuse to incite riots against the Coptic minority.

There is always a certain amount of tension and as recently as 2000 there were direct attacks on the Coptic community that led to the death of 21 men and the Egyptian government is trying to avoid any replay of that event or something possibly worse.

So, bully for the Egyptians.  This is a wise decision for everyone, except those poor innocent pigs.

Well, that's one angle of the story. The angle of reducing all political and civil life in the middle east to: religion.
The other angle is that the pigs are owned by the Zabalayeen, the garbage pickers. The government has been trying to eradicate them and privatize, commercialize the free garbage service they provided for centuries.

Just as you think you have uncovered one layer, the truth is more complicated than what you think you found. Because, all the middle east is not reduced to the easy binary Americans have reduced it to.
Further more on this issue: The Mubarak regime faces daily strikes and discontent. This act will distract from the strikes and make people think he is doing something for them, by, yes, picking on the Zabalayeen. In addition the risk of cholera from the slaughter of the pigs, cause they probably will not in any way take care of that, is greater.
Interesting points from both you and Stellaa. Layers and layers and layers...
I agree with Julie. There seem to be a fewer layers on this onion.
In the biblical story- Jesus cast the demons out of somebody and sent them into a herd of pigs and caused the pigs to run into the water and drown. There was no mention of Jesus feeling any remorse or doing anything to compensate the pig owner. The subtext is- if you're raising pigs you're already violating kosher laws. Hence we can dick with you anyway we want.
