Bio
"Don't ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive, and then go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive." By Harold Thurman Whitman. What has made me come alive in the past year is my work as a psychotherapist, my passion for writing, and my newfound confidence in my abilities. Emotionally strong and physically healthy for the first time in my adult life, I believe I am capable of achieving anything that I set my sights upon. Thank you to my family and friends, those within shouting distance and those who are virtual for sticking by me through the highs and the lows. A shout out to all of you - a simple thank you is all I have - and it is not nearly enough.

It Is With a Heavy Heart...

It is with a heavy heart and deep regrets that I will be closing my blog on Open Salon on February 29th.  I am incredibly busy with my full-time job as a social worker where my responsibilities have expanded along with my (unpaid) hours.  My memoir class at the YMCA is also quite demanding as it is where I am simultaneously writing and presenting chapters of my book and commenting (I hope intelligently) on the writing of my classmates.  I also try to blog weekly for my first paid writing gig – my blog on the website of the magazine Psychology Today.

I don’t like hanging on to anything I can’t do well.

I learned how to blog on OS.  It is a great community and I have made many friends – virtual and otherwise.  This is a place I have always come to for support in the last year-and-a-half, whether I was having a particularly difficult time, or I wanted to celebrate an accomplishment. OS was the one place  that I could count on to receive thoughtful and sustaining comments.  It was the place where I could be totally honest when I felt that I couldn’t even be honest with some of the people in my life.  And for that level of support, I thank you.

There are too many people to thank personally, but there is one person who I want to single out.  Cranky Cuss – a huge thank you.  We met in a class at a community writing center and you are the one who guided me through the process of posting my first blog on OS.  You PM’ed all your fans and introduced me and my writing to them.  When I received my first EP you were the one who e-mailed me to congratulate me.  You are truly a kind and generous soul with a wicked sense of humor.  Many times as I have sat and started my day with one of your blogs I have spit up my coffee as I have laughed out loud.  Thank you again for your kind spirit and generous soul.

A toast to all my fellow OS’ers.  I have so much to thank you for and to be grateful to you for.  Take care and keep writing.

From your bio...."I believe I am capable of achieving anything that I set my sights upon."

...and it appears you have. I know I'm not as active here as I once was either and I've missed a lot of fabulous writing...yours included. You will be missed.

Gerri, it sounds like you are moving on for very good reasons. I have seen your blog at psychologytoday.com I hope everyone will take a look. All the best to you~r
March on, Gerri:

You are an inspiring and talented example of tenaciousness. When I was a teen, you'd have been called a "plugger." That's someone for who difficulty and setbacks just don't count. It's a major compliment. Personally I find your work inspiring. Keep it up.

Movement is good. Surprise visit us when you feel like it or stay too busy being happy.

---Fondly, Gary
I'm sad you're leaving and hope that should things change in your schedule, you would return. You will be missed.
Gerri, best wishes to you! I'm glad we had a chance to meet.
Gerri ~ sorry to see you're closing down your blog here later in the month, but we know where to find you now and in the future! Hope to see you again at an upcoming OS meet-up--you're one of just a handful of OSers I've had the pleasure of seeing twice at a metro area get together! Best wishes for continued success!
I never knew ye. Ne'er once saw a single blog of you'rn. I know I cain't replace ye. Ah shore will doggone do mah baste to feel yer shews.

Of course, I seriously doubt you'll find any of my articles on Pscychology Today, but who knows, maybe someday. I think about all kinds of things and it's a great soul who keeps at it, eventually growing past the circles they once gravitated, expanding their world -- and hopefully, in return, expanding the world of others.

Good luck, stop on by onc't in a wall and Ah'll kip a lat on fer ya.

(that's my version of Deep South phonetic dialog, Ah hope yuh lack it.)

Well, Gerri, I know where to find you and I will keep in touch. Sounds like you off on some good adventures. Congratulations. It was so good to meet you in person last year with Cranky and designanator & Sharon, etc. I wish you the best in your journey. But I will miss you here. ♥
True to form I just got home from work after an 11 hour day. Thank you everyone for taking the time to comment and for your good wishes. You have been good friends and keep on writing!
Gerri, best wishes to you always and I'm sure we'll be in touch. I'll be keeping up with the blog at Psychology Today. And thank you for the kind words!
You're welcome Cranky - you deserve them. And I'm sure we'll be keeping in touch as well. So this is not goodbye, but take care until the next time.
Cranky's kindness is legendary...esp to the newbies! Sounds like you are on a healthy path...We applaud you every step of the way. Be well, do good things...we will remember you and leave a light on just in case! xo
Persistent Muse - Thank you for everything - and for the light left on! It's been a great ride.
