As the plat du jour in the USA is the healthcare debate at the SCOTUS and the bands of pro/against crowds are providing fodder for the newsmedia, I would like to put my two cents in as a frequent visitor to the USA:
. I unfortunately had to visit the ER in Miami Beach a couple of times during our holiday last January.
. Both times I was asked before admission if I had insurance, I said no but that I would pay for the care myself......was given the red carpet treatment.
. The bill amounted to several thousand dollars...gulp!
. Last year I also went to the ER in the town of Empoli near our house, I was just asked for name and address and ushered in; had to stay overnight, not a cent was owned (had x-ray, medicine, ekg...the works)
. If an american were to go to the ER in the same town, and others for that matter, he/she would be admitted and taken care of....all free
I do have a small proposal for our ERs, ask that american if he/she is a republican, if yes charge him/her actual cost; further ask them if they are of the Tea Party, if so charge them double....I am sure they will be happy to realise that here, for a price, we take good care of our oversea friends.........
P.S. for my OS friends, I am doing fine in spite of the ER visits here and there.......Saluti
