Death to Common Sense

Rate: 2 Flag

I constantly hear from pundits and average joes that the world would be better if we simply applied "Common Sense" to all our problems.  I think the problem is that we have, and this sense has failed us.

Common Sense by Thomas Paine  Generally people consider Common Sense to be an understanding of the world held by most common people, not based on scientific or rigorous research.  In an age of Science, we must learn to base our decisions based on facts, not gut instinct.  This means we must research the problems and their causes, and use that information to guide our decisions.

Next time someone tells you that we need more "Common Sense", tell them we need less of it and more of "Factual Sense".

The complexity of gaining an understanding of the root causes of local or global ailments exceeds the span of apprehension of most average and non-average Joes. My take on the application of common sense is actually viewing issues from an elevated perspective and using a larger context and more comprehensive databases. People without common sense are sometimes viewed as myopic and buried in the detail. I think we need both common sense and factual sense more than ever, as we seem to be losing the war of rational decision making.
