Why the Penguin?

Rate: 20 Flag

I get asked frequently why I call myself the Penguin and the answer is quite simple; the penguin is my favourite animal. Why would a penguin be my favourite animal you may ask? Have you ever been bitten by a penguin? No. I have.

I was at a zoo in Wales (A country to the west of England for those who don't know - the penguin (me), is Welsh and loves Wales and would move back in a second for the right opportunity) and every lunch hour they let the penguins walk around the zoo for excercise, or something.

A little black and white, tuxedo clad bird walks up to me and eyes me up and down. He pauses, staring straight at me. I take a step to my right and he follows. I step left, and he follows. I take a step forward and he takes a step back. He was like my little mirror image, shadow or something.

I walked on, thinking nothing of it, laughing at the cuteness of it all. When I turned to check on him, much to my delight, he was following me. I slowed and soon he was walking beside me, step for step.

Half way around the zoo, I'm approached by another penguin. By this time, I had already patted my new buddy on the head and scratched behind where his ears would have been. I have a way with animals... shame I know so little about humans.

The other penguin walks up, looks me up and down, and stands right in front of me. I, being male, assume that if one penguin is friendly then all penguins are friendly. Wrong assumption. As I stuck out my hand to pet this new curious onlooker, his beak darted towards faster than I expected. I snapped close around the palm of my hand, but was quickly removed by the bird. I guess I don't taste good to penguins.

My penguin buddy stepped forward, made a hissing type sound, yelped or squawked or whatever sound best describes a penguin scream and chased the mean penguin away. He protected me. My one-and-a-half foot tall bodyguard.

The bite didn't really hurt, startled me more than anything, and I always tell that story to people to break the ice. It's different, it's fun, and it's why I love penguins.

And this is probably the cutest story you'll ever see on this blog. I offer no apologies, unedited ramblings, and sometimes a smattering of common sense.

I hope to see you around.

Cheers,

GJI Penguin

Welcome!! Okay, I need to get you introduced here. Can't wait to see what offerings we'll get from you! And I love Penguins too, but you know it!
Welcome - nice ice-breaker story. So what's the GJI for? Just kidding. Have fun on OS, where all manner of animals live in the zoo and only a few bite!
If I would have predicted what my blog was gonna be about, it would have been completely wrong.

BTW, are you sure they were penguins and not just a lot of little guys in tuxedos?

Welcome - any friend of Buffy's...
welcome! and what a great story to start out with. How many people can say they have penguins fighting over them?
Welcome to OS. It's always the cute ones you need to watch out for.
My nephew [12] loves penguins. Writing about them and naming yourself the same is golden with me. Welcome to OS. rAted!
(Sheila thank you)
I'm also a penguin fan. I had no idea there were so many of us! BuffyW has kindly brought me to your page. Looking forward to reading more. Welcome. Now get to work. I need input!
Good story and nice to meet you. I don't know about penquins, but you'll find a lot of animals on OS. enjoy.
I got bitten on the foot by a crab in the ocean yesterday. Just call me Crabby!
Enjoyed the read!
Sharon
Penguins are the best!
Welcome. Penguin.
And check out my post on penguins. I've walked among hundreds of thousands and agree they are adorable.
I couldn't help but notice that you say you tell the penguin story to "break the ice". Am I to assume from this that it is you who is responsible for global warming? Welcome to this madhouse. I'm new here myself. Pleased to make your acquaintance.
When my aunt was in college in Edinburgh (that's in Scotland, the country to the North of England) in the 1930s, a whole group of penguins got loose one day when a keeper left their gate open. Not knowing what to do with their new-found freedom, they tagged along behind a group of humans who were leaving the zoo. They ended up queuing for a bus outside the gates. Keepers came and retrieved them before they got any further, but management decided to set up a photo op with the local paper, which duly carried a picture of the penguins hopping on a double-decker bus, the old style where you boarded via a platform at the rear.
Had to check this out as my new project is called the penguins of Madness. Welcome to OS.
Penguins are such sympathetic creatures. Cute as all get out and their little feet and shortened walking span must be so limiting, yet it is their quirks that make them so interesting and curious.

Nice to make your acquaintence here. You were highly recommended and I look forward to seeing your ramblimgs, with or without common sense. Whatever suits you!

Welcome to the neighborblog!
Well howdy Ger, good to see you here. Wow, one post and already fifteen comments.....you are doing really well but that's no surprse, you happen to be a very talented writer.
I adore penguins. I think it has to do with that tuxedo look. Great stuff! Welcome to the soup!
Great story. Maybe because you weren't wearing a tux like all the other penguins.
Great story. I could just picture it - you, the good penguin, the evil penguin - facing off. Good stuff. Glad you're here.
Penguins are welcome here! Dive in.
Welcome - and I have an admission to make - while I have never enjoyed the experience of being bitten by one, I love penguins too. Thank you for the lovely introduction!
Welcome, Penguin! OS can always use another fine writer. have fun and I'll see you around.
Very cute, and appreciated since my daughter, at age three, announced that when she grew up, she wanted to BE a penguin. Welcome to OS.
I used to have a car named Penguin, partly due to Opus the Penguin in the Bloom County comic strip, partly due to the fact I felt like an awkward flightless waterfowl at the time. Still have a thing for penguins. They march to the beat of a different birdy drummer.

Animals are easy. People.... not so much. Anyway, welcome aboard!
Welcome! Any friend of Buffy's is.....
Thank you for this essay.

Your story made me laugh aloud and smile.
