Cheap screen door

Rate: 0 Flag

After my cats were born and we (me, the breeder, both cats) were waiting until they were six months old to make their way west, I determined that the time had come to add a screen door to the laundry room door off the kitchen, the route by which we usually come and go.

I measured the opening, all of 30", and headed off to Home Depot where I secured a $29 mostly-plastic screen door and a few yards of 1x2" rough stock I intended to use as a decorative frame around the new screen door.

The installation of the door went well, and I believe I'd given the laundry room a "skim coat" of drywall mud which made it look much, much better than the hideous old wallpaper that was in there. The screen door, IMHO, needed to have its decorative framing brought out a bit, you know, beefed up. So I devised and added another layer, looked much better.

Then I decided that if one additional layer looked good, two additional layers would look better. And it did. So I  added another layer. And I now have a $29 screen door with about $80 worth of moudling around it. There's a lesson there somewhere.

As time went by, the screen tore from use, so I went back to Home Depot and bought some 1/4 round plastic bits and a thin section of 2 1/2" wood in order to fabricate a kind of push-bar on the interior side, plus to catch and cover the torn screen. Looks surprisingly well. I ought to add the cost of the new bits of material to the overall screen door project cost.

I'm thinking of adding another layer of screen material to keep the cats inside, since one wild night last summer resulted in a $200 vet bill and a cone on an unnamed cat's head for a couple of weeks. You could get a good start on a new screen door for that kind of money.
