Muslims and Mormons

Rate: 11 Flag

Mormons have some really weird beliefs.  They believe that their missionaries shouldn't go swimming because the Devil is in the water and wants to git 'em.  They believe that church doctrine comes from divine revelation, which is suspiciously sensitive to political pressure, e.g., the Mormon reversal on blacks a while back.  They believe in baptising corpses to get them VIP passes to heaven.

Muslims have some really weird beliefs.  Space does not permit ennumerating them. In addition to being silly, they are, in many cases, cruel and savage.

Both Mormons and Muslims believe that women are less than fully fledged human beings.

Having been raised a Mormon, I rejected the religion at roughly the age of reason.  No problem.  Why can't Muslims do the same just as easily?  Why can't we all, in the spirit of humanity, put all this nonsense at rest and proceed together in religion-less reason?  It's a puzzlement.

Two typos. Sorry. I doubt they will bother my fans or be noticed by my more numerous non-fans.
I'm all for putting "all this nonsense at rest and proceed together in religion-less reason". I just hope you recognize that every other religion is at least as fucked up as the Mormons and Muslims. It's all peepee caca.
PS This may be the first thing you've ever said that I more or less agree with.
You can still fix the typos but dont change a thing about the post because I totally agree with you. Why can't we shake this religious thing? Im sure in the far future we will have learned that freedom of religion is vital to our survival. And that means no judgment of other people and their beliefs. But for some odd reason we keep fighting and fighting about life after death. Geez.
It might be more than slightly misleading to suggest they baptize corpses, which isn't really correct. The Mormon/Muslim comparison is fair, however, because Joseph Smith compared himself to the Islamic prophet and syncretized some of the beliefs from that religion.
Parrotdead

Sorry for the partial listing of religious nonsense. You're absolutely right. Don't worry about just starting to appreciate my wisdom. As they say, baby steps.

Kathy

I was speaking figuratively, not literally. The Mormons do baptize the dead, and you know it.
I'd love to see religion play less of a role, or no role at all, in our government. This is one area that I agree strongly with you... so much so that I didn't notice the typos:) Rated.
Hope you don't get smited for this one.
Strongly agree. Enthusiastically rated.
Yeah, I've been baptized as a teenager over a thousand times for dead people by proxy, so yeah, I know it. Manti, Provo, Ogden and Salt Lake. They don't let them do so many anymore. First time at twelve, last time probably at about eighteen. I only said what I did because some people take things too literally, and one OSer already asked me earlier this week if they actually baptize corpses.
First time I ever rated you, but I'm surprised you didn't include all Christians. After all, Mormons claim that they're Christian, too. And the whole Jesus thing is sort of nonsensical, don't you think? I mean he was not one person, he was really three. And isn't this coming back from the dead thing kind of hokey? And I don't even want to talk about the Book of Revelations.

Cap'n Parrotdead said it best about ALL religions.
Patriarchy goes as far back as our existence, I think. I might go so far as to say that it might be hard wired into our DNA. Vestiges of women being unequal or, at best, waay different, exists in the Catholic Church -- they can't be priests, e.g., not as damaging as Muslim strictures, of course, but indicative of a mindset that just won't go away. And, because of what I think might be a hard wire thing, it might never go away.

Obviously, men and women are biologically different in countless ways. If men are genetically dominance-minded ... IF ... then the trick is to find ways to channel that into a better social culture.

Religion isn't the problem, as many progressives blithely and, I think, mindlessly like to say. It's us. And, "us" would be far, far, far worse of were it not for God and religion. It's what you do with it that counts.

Interesting thread, Gordon. Rated.
do, isn't
I had to read your post, a second time. I never thought I would find myself saying this. I agree with you, totally! rated on fairness
Here's what I'd like to understand....

You get to proclaim "X" religion and "Y" religion as being "weird." Certainly you have freedom of speech and I encourage you and all other Americans to take RESPONSIBLE advantage of their right.

But if all you bring to the table is that Mormons and Muslims are weird, you fail in making any sort of legit point.

And Cap'n was correct with his first comment. ALL religions are jacked up in one way or another. Why the focus on Mormons and Muslims?
Jeez, that's what all that thunder and lightning was about last night - THE APOCALYPSE APPROACHES - I agree with Gordon Osmond. Christ, my head hurts.
