A Song For My Sister

Rate: 17 Flag

Hey sister, sister here’s what we should do.

When we get older, just me and you.

We’ll go traveling.

You know you’re the one I would choose.

We’ll go in the rain and make Paris by spring.

The Louvre and the Seine we will see.

The art in the streets,

The poets, the lovers. The Left Bank just you and me.

Post cards from Venice. They’ll know where we are.

Madrid and old Napoli.

We’ll drink too much wine in Palermo

And eat pasta in gold Tuscany.

Kiss our grown children and leave them to fate.

Pay all our bills. Who cares if they’re late?

And go traveling.

I’m free for the next twenty years.

Summer in Greece in a house by the sea.

You know we’ll find paradise there.

Growing lazy and brown playing guitars

With the wind and the sand in our hair.

What would you say to the Sphinx if you could?

We can sail down the Nile on a barge.

We can climb to the top of Mount Kilamanjaro

And sleep under African stars.

Leave the old men with their fish and their cars.

Go for a year and follow the stars.

Let’s go traveling.

I’m not sure they’ll notice we’ve gone.

Winter will find us down Mexico way.

Sending notes saying see you all soon.

Should we drive to the hills in an old rented car,

Drink tequila, and howl at the moon?

And when we return from our year in the world

They’ll be waiting for us at the gate.

We’ll come bringing presents and wearing perfume

That we bought in that shop in Kuwait.

Hey sister, sister here’s what we should do.

When we get older, just me and you.

We’ll go traveling.

You know you’re the one I would choose.

Just dreaming on a winter's day.
I don't know if you meant sister literally, or colloquially, but I took it as the former - my sis and I are the only close ones in the family, and we always talk about how it will be when we get old - widows, living in a big old rambling house together with six dogs (no cats!) and traveling to places like Viet Nam and Fiji and Sicily each year. This poem made me think of all those conversations we've had, often sitting on the couch on Christmas as all the relative frenzy swirls around us, spinning our dream of a long-distant future together....
Gracie,

So sweet. Yesterday, I spent time with my *sister.* She is my sister of choice, however, since all I have is brothers...older brothers (that last bit is for Frank.) And I have a sister-in-law who has know me since I was a toddler---so she counts as a sis (but I digress).

So my sister of choice and I often talk of doing the same some day. Of course, we might bring along (for brief periods of time) her young adult daughters. (Did I mention, only for brief periods of time?)

This just might be a universal fantasy of *sisters,* and you have captured it beautifully.
I don't have a sister by blood, but I do by the circumstances of life- we share the same first name and sometimes I wonder if we share the same brain. As much as we love our men, we often talk about growing old together...I'd love to send her your post. We always joke that our love lives would've been so much easier had we been gay, but that we don't want to see each other's girlie parts.
This is beautiful, well done Gracie!
Sister to Sister this is the eSSence of a winter's day dream. Some of us are deStined to be Sisters, don't you think? Is there perhaps room in this glorious adventure for another S?

(Where is Lea? She's done much of this already, the perfect Guiding Sister With Tequila in Hand).
My sister of choice will live to be over 100, if her family background is an indication. I will die well short of that. Thank goddess.
Sandra: my sister and I do the same thing. We dream about travel. Freedom. Today I posted this because she and I had to go to a funeral and I'm pretty sure we would've rather gone anywhere else.
mah and krissi: Sisters are sisters by heart. Not necessarily by blood, right? Every girl needs a sister. Thanks for reading my day dream.
Sally: of course, OS sister! You are definately invited. Pack a bag and be ready to go at a moments notice!
hyblaean: I tend to think that I'd better start planning my trip soon. You never know if you'll have one day or 100 years, right?
Hi there my GA sis. I think this is gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am envious of your 'real sis'. I love the flow of your poem here.
It is fabulous.
Can I be your sister?
I love my sister. And, as you may have seen from my posts, I love to travel. There are very few places I could go with my sis, or many other people for that matter. I don't WANT to stay in a 4 star chain hotel and I don't want western food. And, not many people are willing to take off with one backpack and relatively open schedule. Except my friend who is originally from Russia. After growing up in Russia, she is the personification of no-frills. We had a grand time in China .............

Lovely , evocative post - I want to be on the road again!
Oh, gracielou -- My sister of the heart and I talked about a life like this. She and I will never do this, as I lost her in 2005, but I'd love to join any of the OS Sisters for even a smidgen of this adventure.
Hi Suzy my GA sister! Someday...someday, right?
Lisa: absolutely.
artsfish: You sound like the perfect traveling companion to me.
julie: I'm so sorry for your loss. There are so few women in this world we consider sisters. But it seems like here on OS we are so lucky. So many women with beautiful hearts and minds. Every day I am amazed.

Thanks for the kind words from you all.
oh gracie, I don't have a sister, but if I did I'd like her to be just like you ... fun, sweet, silly, loving, kind, hilarious ... you are simply wonderful!!!
irritated and jane: Wow you are too nice. My sister is pretty great. I wanted to write her a song because some of my favorite memories are sitting on her porch listening to her strum her guitar and sing. I have zero musical talent. I'm hoping she'll come up with the tune.
Can you adopt me into your sisterhood as well? I only have one brother, but I'd travel the world with him if I thought he'd put up with me for that long....

This was perfect for today, thanks...
Yes to sisters! Loved the poem.
Lucky me to have such a great sister--O'Kathryn. She and I are going to do San Francisco next week , and we will have great glorious fun!
O'steph: my sis and I did San Fran three years ago and had a complete blast! Don't forget to rent bikes and ride through the gg park. It's beautiful. Have fun! Lucky you.

MzE: Of course you can be part of this sisterhood! It's an open door. Thanks for the nice words.
gracie: I absolutely LOVE this. I have 4 sisters...4. I love all of them, but could only travel with a few of them, my beautiful sister Cathy (cathy gast feroe) being the one I'd take off with in a heartbeat. In fact, your post has sparked me to plans of a place far off and warm...I'm emailing her right now! Thank you!
Somehow Mary I can just picture you and Cathy on this year together...
Missed this one, too! I just can't keep up. I can't type for crap and I make up for it by reading real slow.
I'm real tight with my only sister, but we might kill each other on the flight to Europe!
Very touching. Makes me want to get the hell outta dodge TODAY! Oh, traveling. Oh the freedom of it. Sometimes I think its only via traveling that you can truly, truly discover yourself.

If you're sister can't make it, I'd like to be Plan B.
Beautiful. 'Kiss our grown children and leave them to fate'
Just what I wished for during all the years of raising kids, when time with my sister(s) was so short. You inspire me.
