Hey sister, sister here’s what we should do.
When we get older, just me and you.
We’ll go traveling.
You know you’re the one I would choose.
We’ll go in the rain and make Paris by spring.
The Louvre and the Seine we will see.
The art in the streets,
The poets, the lovers. The Left Bank just you and me.
Post cards from Venice. They’ll know where we are.
Madrid and old Napoli.
We’ll drink too much wine in Palermo
And eat pasta in gold Tuscany.
Kiss our grown children and leave them to fate.
Pay all our bills. Who cares if they’re late?
And go traveling.
I’m free for the next twenty years.
Summer in Greece in a house by the sea.
You know we’ll find paradise there.
Growing lazy and brown playing guitars
With the wind and the sand in our hair.
What would you say to the Sphinx if you could?
We can sail down the Nile on a barge.
We can climb to the top of Mount Kilamanjaro
And sleep under African stars.
Leave the old men with their fish and their cars.
Go for a year and follow the stars.
Let’s go traveling.
I’m not sure they’ll notice we’ve gone.
Winter will find us down Mexico way.
Sending notes saying see you all soon.
Should we drive to the hills in an old rented car,
Drink tequila, and howl at the moon?
And when we return from our year in the world
They’ll be waiting for us at the gate.
We’ll come bringing presents and wearing perfume
That we bought in that shop in Kuwait.
Hey sister, sister here’s what we should do.
When we get older, just me and you.
We’ll go traveling.
You know you’re the one I would choose.

So sweet. Yesterday, I spent time with my *sister.* She is my sister of choice, however, since all I have is brothers...older brothers (that last bit is for Frank.) And I have a sister-in-law who has know me since I was a toddler---so she counts as a sis (but I digress).
So my sister of choice and I often talk of doing the same some day. Of course, we might bring along (for brief periods of time) her young adult daughters. (Did I mention, only for brief periods of time?)
This just might be a universal fantasy of *sisters,* and you have captured it beautifully.
This is beautiful, well done Gracie!
(Where is Lea? She's done much of this already, the perfect Guiding Sister With Tequila in Hand).
I am envious of your 'real sis'. I love the flow of your poem here.
It is fabulous.
Lovely , evocative post - I want to be on the road again!
Lisa: absolutely.
artsfish: You sound like the perfect traveling companion to me.
julie: I'm so sorry for your loss. There are so few women in this world we consider sisters. But it seems like here on OS we are so lucky. So many women with beautiful hearts and minds. Every day I am amazed.
Thanks for the kind words from you all.
This was perfect for today, thanks...
Lucky me to have such a great sister--O'Kathryn. She and I are going to do San Francisco next week , and we will have great glorious fun!
MzE: Of course you can be part of this sisterhood! It's an open door. Thanks for the nice words.
I'm real tight with my only sister, but we might kill each other on the flight to Europe!
If you're sister can't make it, I'd like to be Plan B.
Just what I wished for during all the years of raising kids, when time with my sister(s) was so short. You inspire me.
