Spring Break With My Youngest Young'uns

Rate: 30 Flag

A couple of weeks ago my youngest son returned home from seven months in Patagonian Chile and Argentina.  He was attending an outdoor leadership school and was doing things like this:

d in patagonia

Youngest son mountaineering in the Andes in Chile

And this:

d patagonia 2

Seventy days into his adventure

 And this:

d mountaineering

He lived in places like this:

nols tents

 And this:

snow cave d

Two weeks in a snow cave (not for the claustrophobic)

It was the adventure of a lifetime!  His sister, one year his senior, attended the same program the year before.  They learned leadership skills in mountaineering, ocean kyaking, sheer face rock climbing, wilderness first response (medical evac, search and rescue), expeditioning, etc.

Both of my youngest are outdoors people and this schooling is their ticket to the world.  With the certifications they received (along with twenty seven hours of college credits) they are qualified to work in many outdoor guide positions.

Lets just suffice it to say this:  Mom was crazy the entire time each one of them was gone!  My sanity aside, the opportunity for them was too great to refuse.

Right after youngest son returned home to the states he and I flew to California and met up with his sister (youngest daughter) and her boyfriend who spent the winter in Steamboat Springs, Colorado.

Youngest daughter and the boyfriend had been working at the ski resort since October and doing things like this:

j and s skiing

They lived in this little cabin:

Where their view from the porch looked like this:

Add about 400 inches of snow and you get the picture

We met up in Los Angeles at the airport and traveled up the Ventura Highway to my inlaws' home on Silver Strand Beach.  Neither of the kids had seen their grandparents for a year.  We are a very close family and visits to Grammy and Grandpa's beach house are an annual tradition.

My husband's brother and sister and their families all came to the beach house for  Easter.  It was great seeing everyone and spending time eating, drinking, and laughing.

Silver Strand Beach is a little mile long slice of heaven  adjacent to Channel Islands Harbour and just south of Ventura, CA.  We did many fun things over two weeks time.  I thought you might like to see photos from a couple of my favorite outings.

*Bear with me...this is the first time I have posted photos on my blog.

Arriving:  Scorpion Cove, Santa Cruz Island

One morning youngest son, youngest daughter, the boyfriend, and I took a boat from Ventura Harbour out to Santa Cruz Island.  Santa Cruz is part of the Channel Islands National Park and is a great place to spend a day hiking.

Another day we took a great hike in the Santa Monica mountains to Echo Cliffs so the young'uns could go rock climbing.  We drove south on the Pacific Coast Highway past Point Magu and then inland up into the mountains about six miles.  We hiked inland on the Backbone Trail for about five miles to the cliffs.

Biting my nails watching!  And yes, I do always wear that hat when I hike.

We did a lot more things during the two weeks but these two hikes were my favorites.  We flew home last Thursday and by Friday evening the young'uns were already gone!  They left to go to the Ocoee River in Tennesee to be river guides for the summer.  Ahhhh well...at least I had hold of them for a couple of weeks.

I already miss them!
Oh, this is fabulous! What wonderful pictures and spectacular adventures. You must be proud of them, and how nice that you got to spend time together.
Hey girlfriend, i have missed you. I see you have had some absolutely fabulous things to do and see. The pics are great. Your kids are lovely too, as well as you!!
Thanks for sharing this. You rock, gracielou!!
I'd say I love your hat, but you made that about my Ford. ;) Still — don't apologize for the cool hat!

They sound like wonderful kids who have great adventures both far away from you and in your presence. That's a real blessing.
Awesome post and look like you all had a lot of fun and what a great adventure.
Whoo HooHoo!!!! Now THAT is what I call a vacation! Breathtaking photos plus getting to visit with the folks and time with the kids. You must be on a high right now, but I know how hard it must be letting them go their own ways. But they will have millions of stories to tell their own kids someday. Doing the things you love is the secret to a happy life and it looks like you have that covered in spades. Good on you, Gracielou!
NNora: yes! It was great to be with them after not seeing them for months and months.

Mission: my pal! Missed you too! It took me forevvvvvaaa to post these pics! Thanks for the compliment.

High: well okay! Now that I know you bought a hybrid...well...I'm just plain old jealous! It won't be long and your littles will be out on great adventures of their own. It happens in the blink of an eye!

fireyes! Thank you girl. Long time no see...I missed you!
Dynamite photos and the treks sound terrific! Love the Santa Cruz pics and the ones with whitewater rafting are totally cool. What a blast that was, I'm sure! How wonderful for your time together with your kids. Thanks for sharing this! Good for you, Gracielou!
[gulp]

I am all askeered just LOOKING. I can't imagine BEING THERE.

Wow!
I love adventurous people.
Michael: It's sooooooo hard to call you bitch when you say such nice things! I really wouldn't even do it...except, well, ....ya know...I KNOW you like it...Bitch! Ha ha ha...(it just never gets old, does it?)
It was a really nice vacation. And it was great to see my two youngest. It's been a long hard seperation since Sept (for me, not them). Guess I'd better get used to it.
Just Pam: Santa Cruz Island is spectacular! Honestly, one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. These pics do not do the place justice. BTW...I am not a rafter...thank God I had a good guide. Right after that pic was taken I catapulted out of the boat and dragged the guy (my bro's partner, The Brain) across from me into the raging river. My daughter had JUST said, "Now, listen everyone, this is a place YOU DO NOT want to swim!" Bam...outta the boat I go...thought I'd drown...got a little scared to be honest. Still tho...I lived to tell the tale!
Verbal, Lonnie, and Trig: Thanks for stoppping by and checking out my spring break! Now go outside and breathe some fresh air!
These children of yours are living my dream: a life in contact with the best wild nature, which means a life in contact with the best of themselves. I imagine you must have been worried all along their stay in Patagonia, but the images are so incredible and they must be so happy with this experience that I am sure it was very well worth it. You are a mom heroine! It´s not easy to support your own children to do these activities and to be happy with them and for them. A big kiss to you, you´ve made my evening here in Buenos Aires!
Santa Cruz island really looks like our Santa Cruz province in Argentina, maybe that´s why they share the name? I don´t know....
Jeez your kids are outdoorsy! Good for them.
And good to see you back!
What an adventure! Beautiful work posting the photos. Flawless.
I wish when I had graduated High School I had taken a year off abroad instead of a year in school on a broad! (rim shot)

terrific post, terrific family. we have some of those types in our immediate extended family, though I'm a bit more sedentary.

Looks like you had a blast, I'm jealous of your trip out to Santa Cruz.

And nice to see you back, but you've been busy! so it's ok. xo
First things first: I MISSED YOU!!!!

Now that I got that out of my system, your kids are to die for. You have to be very proud of them. And of course you miss them. That's what makes you such a great mom.

You did great getting the pics posted here. So once again you are wondering if you "did right," and I'm telling you, "Sure, you did." Some things never change do they?

Michael has told me several times that nobody calls him "bitch" quite the way you do, and then he gets all teary and orders another Bud and feels better until the tears start again. Then its another Bud, etc. So be real nice to him. You know what makes him feel better.

I've been getting in trouble writing about religion and politics with a little frivolity thrown in here and there. Same old, same old.

So nothing new from me other than I am able to ride my bike a bit longer at one time than I thought I would be able to with the med problems, which makes me happy.

Because I can ride longer without the feet flaring Sue are going to try a week on the bikes on a leisurely tour, probably into the South Western Pennsylvania mountains. Its very pretty over there, and not as demanding mountains as the ones we usually ride in further south. We'll take it easy and with any luck my big fear of having to give up touring will be overcome. Modified, but still touring.

Come and go as you can and always know that when you are gone you are never forgotten.

Monte
Wow. Great pictures. Very adventurous children. (Can’t imagine the ups and downs of that for a parent!)

Isn’t Santa Cruz amazing? My favorite secret (but not so secret) dive site. You’re right. It’s a year-round heaven on earth.
Santa Cruz Island, that is – as well as the rest of the Channel Islands. (Although Santa Cruz in Monterey Bay ain’t too shabby either).
So that's where you' ve been! It looks like all of you were able to enjoy quite the adventure. I do hope that when you went for your swim at "Broken Nose," you didn't end up with one yourself. :)
The Ocoee? That is a wonderful white water experience! And the guides, for the most part, are terrific. How fabulous that they live this life, so full of adventure. I know I sound corny but really, it's wonderful.

I wonder if I could get some Ocoee adventurers together this summer ... maybe one of your children would end up being my guide. :)

I almost fell out a bunch of times, but the only injury I ever got from white water rafting was on this river when one of my friends let go of the top of his paddle. (never let go!!) My knee hurt for a year.
Wow, what an adventurous bunch! You do know I live right next door to the Ocoee on the Tellico River, right? Next time, I expect a visit. The dude's buyin'
marcela: kisses right back to you! All I can say is this...thank God not all of my kids want to risk life and limb all day every day! These two (the youngest) are so fun and they are definately living life large for now. And, I would love to see the Santa Cruz region of Argentina someday. I dream of visiting Chile and Argentina. A girl can dream, right?

Young mung! Whoo hoo! Yep...I guess outdoorsy is the correct term. Crazy works too, I guess.

Janie! We could not have asked for more beautiful weather the entire two weeks we were in CA. The islands and the mainland were beautiful. Seriously, if you ever visit southern CA...do it in springtime when everything is green and the weather is lovely.

Little bro Blue! Ha ha ha! Know what you mean! And thanks for the compliment on the pics. I can't believe I actually got them posted. I DO believe that most young adults should take time to travel and explore before finishing up college and going straight into the working world.

Barry: you would LOVE the channel islands! The scenery and wildlife is unbelieveable. You and your camera would have a blast. If you are ever around Santa Barbara or Ventura you should definately take the boat trip out.

Monte darling! I MISSED you too! I'm so glad to hear that you and Sue will have an opportunity to go riding. I'll be thinking about you and hoping that everything goes perfect and the two of you have the time of your lives. I'm planting my summer garden over the next few days but after that I'm gonna have to go back and read all your posts that I've missed. I love how you stay in trouble. Keep it coming brother!
As far as Michael goes...I think you're right...he just needs it.
I will be coming and going quite a bit over summertime. More travel in the plans (lucky me). All budget but lots of adventures I hope. I'll try to keep you posted.

David: lucky you to dive in the channel islands! That water is freezing!!!!! Do you live near Santa Barbara?
In July my oldest son, his girlfriend and I are all going kyaking around Santa Cruz Island. I can't wait! I've heard the snorkeling is fantastic...I'll have my wetsuit with me so I'm hoping to have time to get in the water. I'm really looking forward to that trip.

Lisa: I did not get a broken nose but Doc says this old back can't take whitewater or rollercoasters anymore. Sucks for me! Ah well...this old broad can still paddle down a lazy river.

Odette: If you look at the last pic you will surely notice that I DO NOT have my hand on my t grip! Rule no. 1: NEVER let go of your t grip! I suck at whitewater...still it was fun. Hope your knee recovered fully from your spill. That river is deceptively rough and tumble for such small water, right?
If you are going to the Ocoee this summer you HAVE to go to Wildwater and ask for one of my kids to guide you! I'll pm you with their names if you're going...just let me know, ok? Cool!

Tom darling! I'm up in your neck of the woods off and on all summer! I will definately take you up on the offer to buy me a beer (that is what you were offering, right?)! Dude! I'll pm you before I head up the next time. FUN! Ha ha ha ...who would've guessed that there would be a Tellico OS meetup? New York eat your hearts out!
Gracie: So good to see you and I love all your family pictures. I just love time with my kids...it's such a treat. We had a place in Steamboat for several years. I love that town. Thanks for sharing them all with us.
mary! Always a pleasure to have you here! I did not get a chance to go to Steamboat but youngest daughter spent a great winter "shredding the nar, bro."
I don't know if the world needs leaders that can climb mountains. I would be happy with ones that aren't complete fucktards.
Ha! Jim I'm right there with you! But, if I DID want to climb a mountain, I WOULD like to have a guide who could lead me to living through it!
This is one of the greatest gifts because those memories will stay with them for a lifetime. How cool is it that they get to see just how beautiful the world is and to experience so many wonderful things at the same time too? That's exponential joy that no one can ever take away from them. Thanks for sharing your beautiful pics and giving my wanderlust a serious kick in the pants..... Rated
Look at you!

These pictures are fantastic. You said it right when you said "Once in a lifetime." Your kids are lucky to have these adventures and to have a mom like you.

Bravo!
fun photos! these make me want to travel...and it's nearly summer too.
You did a wonderful job with the photos Gracielou but aren't they a pain to put in the blog? I don't know about you but the words go all over the place and then I preview it and it looks fine and then I publish it and it's all shot to hell again!

Your family is full of activity and bravery and outdoorsmanship. That is indeed a wonderful thing.

Thanks for the tour and introduction.
onecorgilover: it's funny 'cause now the kids are giving back adventures and wonderful experiences to ME! How fun is that? BTW, I noticed that you are from Atlanta too...we have probably walked by each other in Piedmont on a beautiful spring day. At least I hope so.

Duaneart: welcome new friend! Awww...thanks.

dolores: well honey, just hit the road and enjoy yourself! Go, go, go! While the going is good!

Beth: I SUCK at posting pictures! This post took me all day to put together and the writing stinks 'cause I was soooooo caught up in the photos!
BTW...you MUST go surfing on Silverstrand Beach! That little stretch of heaven raises world class surfers. And...let's just say that one of my favorite pastimes while I'm there is sitting at the jetty...uh...appreciating the scenery.
gracielou, Woah! As a major wuss, I'll never experience anything like this in real life. (love water and natural beauty...alas, never learned to swim) Thanks for taking me along on this adventure. What a ride!

Aww mothership...you are most welcome. Thank you for stopping by and I hope you do so again in the future!
I just stumbled on this tonight. Was this NOLS? My oldest (21) did a 3 week Outward Bound when he was 14 and my youngest (now13) can't wait until next year so he can go. I sent off for the NOLS catalog and I know they have a Patagonia program. I would love my oldest to do this- he is studying for a semester in Japan right now. He has a very serious long term girlfriend and I think the 7 months in a remote part of the world with no video skype does not appeal to him. Your kids look amazing and how wonderful that you can provide these opportunities to them!
This entire post is marvelous (SEVEN MONTHS in Patagonia! Wow.)
