THIRD GALLERY CHALLENGE: THE LOOK OF SILENCE

Rate: 22 Flag

Silence....it is another way of communication, sometimes more eloquent and articulate, then words themselves. Silence, is a need, an action with no action, but still hides such a tremendous strength of all the untold, of all those unable to be told, or unwanted. Nature, has silence, trees although working, do not utter a word, clouds too... Silence, inside us, between us, saying and hiding, building and destructing, an absence of words but not emotions.

This is one of the most difficult challenges to me, cause it is true easily for all of us to have depictions of nature, society, humans, but can we have images of the feelings we feel...if one needed to describe silence not with words, but only with images, which image/art creation would he/she choose, and is it possible to have the depiction of feelings with no words, this is the answer asked with this challenge.

It is a word society, the one we all live in, and although communication has even created an online universe, still we humans, lack in the art of emotional understanding.Maybe, words are just said to be heard, and not to be meant.

Silence, is an existence in our existence, and I am thinking, what is the look of your silence ?

The third gallery challenge has the simplest rules, just tag your post ''third gallery challenge'', have a description of your work, and what is silence to you, ΡΜ me, if you want,  so as your works to be in the third gallery list, and that is all!!

I am in my silences so, if any among us is in the same situation, let us communicate through the silence of art works.

Thank you very much for your interest,

Be well, and have good summer swims!!!

Great theme - Silence is golden, so I've been told
~R~
Interesting topic needs considering. jd.
Very interesting theme......my brain is already trying to sift through my images.
Excellent image of silence... I was reading about Pythagoras over the winter. Pythagoras said we can never truly know silence because we have grown up the sound of the spheres. Meaning the tonal vibration of the other planets has always been with us. We have grown up with it so we think we do not hear it but it's there.
Afrodite, that's a beautiful photo and a great theme for the 3rd gallery challenge! I'm already thinking about what I can present for my post responding to your O.C.
[r] stathi great exercise, great example from you. i love the focus and unfocus combination above. very stirring. the paradox of what a silence does for one. It gets to the heart of things as a focus but it needs to trust enough to let the encircling reality fuzz out.

Who said God can be found in the silence between one's thoughts? I can't find it yet via googling or binging, rather. One of my favorite songs is The Sounds of Silence!

True silence is the rest of the mind; it is to the spirit what sleep is to the body, nourishment and refreshment. ~William Penn

Silence is the true friend that never betrays. ~Confucius

An inability to stay quiet is one of the most conspicuous failings of mankind. ~Walter Bagehot

Silence is a source of great strength. ~Lao Tzu

Silence is the universal refuge, the sequel to all dull discourses and all foolish acts, a balm to our every chagrin, as welcome after satiety as after disappointment. ~Henry David Thoreau

Accustomed to the veneer of noise, to the shibboleths of promotion, public relations, and market research, society is suspicious of those who value silence. ~John Lahr

The Arctic expresses the sum of all wisdom: Silence. ~Walter Bauer

Soon silence will have passed into legend. Man has turned his back on silence. Day after day he invents machines and devices that increase noise and distract humanity from the essence of life, contemplation, meditation... tooting, howling, screeching, booming, crashing, whistling, grinding, and trilling bolster his ego. His anxiety subsides. His inhuman void spreads monstrously like a gray vegetation. ~Jean Arp

I have often lamented that we cannot close our ears with as much ease as we can our eyes. ~Richard Steele

Nowadays most men lead lives of noisy desperation. ~James Thurber

Now all my teachers are dead except silence. ~W.S. Merwin

The silence depressed me. It wasn't the silence of silence. It was my own silence. ~Sylvia Plath, The Bell Jar

We listen too much to the telephone and we listen too little to nature. The wind is one of my sounds. A lonely sound, perhaps, but soothing. Everybody should have his personal sounds to listen for—sounds that will make him exhilarated and alive, or quiet and calm... As a matter of fact, one of the greatest sounds of them all—and to me it is a sound—is utter, complete silence. ~André Kostelanetz

All noise is waste. So cultivate quietness in your speech, in your thoughts, in your emotions. Speak habitually low. Wait for attention and then your low words will be charged with dynamite. ~Elbert Hubbard

Great exercise - because of course, there is no such thing as silence. Simon and Garfunkel knew it in the first line of their song, The Sounds of Silence - it starts with a conversation.
This is a treasure of wisdom, Afrodite. I'm not much of a visual person, but I love the way you described your thoughts and feelings here in words. Your photo is intriguing. Such a delicate image.
As a curator, you are golden!

Thank you for the opportunity to show.

blessings,
M.C.S, I am waiting to see your silence in art!!

Annie, trully, it is a difficult subject, but I know that you can do it!!

Shutterbug, I think that your images are full of feelings and beauty, images are from their essence a silent communication, and I am sure that we will rock in this one!! Thank you.

Algis, thank you for the information, never knew about this. I am waiting to see your silence!!!

Designanator, you are so kind, thank you so much for making this a tradition in OS, I know that we all can make this happen, and have the visual sight of silence!!

Libby, you brought so beauty in this theme, the quotes on silence are such a precious wisdom, as you !!!! Thank you!!

Nilesite, I have just seen your New York silence- stillness and it is a true insight both on the city and in feelings. New Yorkers here must thank you for sharing such a great place with all of us. Thank you so much, for making this challenge tradition happen, and with such a difficult theme!!! Bravo!!!

Matt, so thank you for your beautiful words. Fragilities, aren't we all, I am thinking... Thank you for being here!!!

Ume, it is so good to meet you and I have just seen your excellent work, the metaphor of the image with the feeling silence is so true, brilliant, and telling so much, just with this silent image. Such a great work, thank you so much for being in this gallery challenge. You made it happen, and your beautiful words, just made my day, thank you!!!
I'll add one more to Libby's list:

"All sound is born from silence and returns back to it."
(((Stathi)))) -- I have another one to add after Kate's which I used in my cell phone rant:

Abraham Lincoln said, “Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt.” :-)

best, libby
So true, Stathi. You can learn more about what a person truly thinks and feels by their body language, a form of silence.
Diary, you are so kind, thank you for your beautiful words!!!

Libby, I am gonna use the last one, so useful, thank you.

Kate, your contribution on silence quotes, so great, welcome home again!!

Erica, so difficult that we all must learn so many languages so as to understand each other, silence, and body language being some of them, thank you for reading!!
Silence is where the sounds are still there, but they are not outside anymore, the sounds are inside your head, cuz you have cut down the ambient noise enough so that it does not seem to be Exterior to you anymore.

As an artist, you have difficulty clearly putting the line between the exterior and the interior.
On the borderland, the dreams are seeded.
Some in sleep are developed a bit, underground, in the nutrient earth of the Unconscious mind.
But the idea, the seed, the plant, the child needs sunshine.
Of consciousnesss.
Eyes bring that in. ears too.
Eyes and ears.
Photograph something that I never saw but knew I would someday see If I lived long and dedicated enough to the truth of Beauty..
Damn, my first comment just disappeared. Great picture and brilliant theme. Really looking forward to the responses, but I'd also like to see more of your work on this subject - it seems very you!
the photo is blatantly sexual while proclaiming silence.
it seems a ghostly woman's thigh area.
pubic hair a tree.
i am gonna have to

".. I am in my silences so...'', believe me...me too! Thank you for this challenge, brings in mind fresh mornings, nights with moon and travellings in sea..
madam Spider Stahi,
you have weaved wondrous web of silence over the Golden Dawn...
the dew breaks with the first few words of people
stuck in Eden without knowing it thinking
so nervously that something will go wrong
and making it go wrong
so as to make the world go wrong,

for the politicians, those scoundrels, they wish you to think
it is all going wrong
so you need them.
at the throne.

haw. there is only one Throne, and it is where You Now Sit.
Afrodite, it is extremely hard for a rooster to relate to the concept of silence. Our hens are continually reminding us of their vitality and that their vocal chords are healthy. Then, of course, there are those morning crows from the patriarchal pinnacle of the flock. We get the whole clucking chorus going at sunrise, every dingdong day. I'm afraid pure silence would put me into a shock of sorts. I do love your image. It looks tasty. ;-D
Ah AFRODITE, who should spew forth first from the pure fine Froth of Immediate Eternity At Long Last:
Matt the chicken man.
“Afrodite, it is extremely hard for a rooster
to relate to the concept of silence.” A strutter of shakespearian bare stages, he, fulla fury and signifying something or other.
With your help dear gal I would like to Reinvent the English Language with me, to make it more modern and post post post modern too, and all IN between. This is your duty now.

Matt:

Our hens are continually reminding us of their vitality and that their vocal chords are healthy.

It is always so. The women wake the men.
And so the Prophecy says:
The beginning of the end of the old order starts in the heart, mostly.

Afrodite, my previous attempts to comment and rate this beautiful post were unseccessful; I hope this time is the magic one. Thank you for spurring our imagination on with such a theme and leading the way yourself with an inspirational post yourself. It gave way to great comments like the ones from Algis and Emmerling; and quotes such as those included by Libby. I'm so glad you are on Open Salon.
R♥
Love the work...love the theme!
A beautiful challenge.
This reminds me of a supe good friend from my college days. We could be together and communicate without talking.
For without sound there would be...Absence in color.
James, you are such a philosopher, and it would be great for me if you wrote about my images,- no one has reviewed them yet,- so it would be so good, if your immense talent on describing, analyzing and adding old times wisdom to newdays with a sense of sentimentality and creative criticism, had my work as a describing challenge. So many thank you for being here, James!!!!
Thank you Icy, I so much like reading your work, is like reading a real novel, with novel ideas!!!

Art, the power of a poet is in his/hers voice, and silence is the last thing I would want for you. But to be honest, maybe the summer, maybe so many other maybes, I was in such a need for silence, but mostly I wanted to meet other with the same need. Thank you for reading!!!

Olga, I know...me too!!!

CMaaan, my image looks tasty...That is a new and such a beutiful comment for my work... If you were here, I would have given it to this so talented rooster of yours!! Thank you for being here!!!!

Fusun, your work, just left me silent, such a beutiful country, such beautiful images and activities, thinkings and feelings. The image narrative you gave to all of us, is like taking us all to a great and significant journey, thank you for this...!!!

JD, I just loved your latest poetic work, on how a father feels for his son, and all the emotions behind time flying.... Such a beautiful and sensitive thinking, thank you for sharing!!!
Brazen thank you, and gongratulations on your latest EΡ!!!

Swallowtail, good to meet you here, thank you for your beautiful words!!!

Kathy, I am missing this kind of communication, is like the other is you, and you the other, with just looking you can tell how your friend feels, what he/she thinks, I have lived with this connection and it is both liberating from the self, but also so liberating from all the commodities of verbal language..it is true talking, without uttering a word. Thank you for reminding me!!!

Tg Within, you are such a creative force in here, I would like to see your silence, even if it is colourful!!!! Thank you for being here!!
ok i shall talk of this image, which i like :)

(as do most men)

Your first image is stark whilst being nebulous.
An unconscious male mind will point out that it is a representation of a Vagina,
A rather lovely one…
But Consciousness? Cannot say that this is what it sees so it sees otherwise.

It sees the delicate sudden focus upon some sticks, well defined indeed, but bathed in Mystery and of course sexual ‘symbolism’
Can there be images to capture the emotions we feel? What a wonderful question--I do this all the time: try to select images that correspond with words in a story I post, but I never really thought about it this way. I think your image is a wonderful depiction of silence! Thank you for a thought-provoking post and a beautiful image! :)
James, this is just a winter, natural theme, and it is an effort of depicting the helpless of old age (winter), when troubles (fog) come in close.

It is the silence of the unknown coming, the fear of this unknown, the touching endeavour of nature (old trees) and weather (fog), and the mystery that we all want, and have in life.

Fog to me has this mystique effect, makes me feel mysterious, and winter is my everyday mood, so this image- which I very much like also- is, to me, a sign for the nature unknown workings..

Nature works in silence, we do not know what trees, mountains, clouds, earth, sky, hide inside, we only are able to see the surface, the rest, although, we all know they are there, are in a silent knowing...Still, the inside - the silent one- is the most essential, far more essential than the surface.

To me the meeting of the delicate, but still strong, fog with the delicate tree is one of the most interesting ... and it is a silence romance...just as humans in love, when they look to each others eyes, say so much, without saying one single world!!!

Your description, so radical as always, and thought provoking , thank you for giving both your time and your effort, for my work!!!!
Sally, it has been so long since I last read you here, thank you for your beautiful, and so encouraging works, your latest article, an excellent read. I will have your ''...writers walk..''. Such great ideas in this writing Sally, thank you for sharing!!!
... an action with no action ...

perfect.
A wonderful idea.
'Since long I've held silence a remedy for harm' (Aeschylus).
Silence can be a remedy, as Art can be, to many harms.
I wait to see & meanwhile I wish you best swims & lots of inspiration.
Kim, your latest work on Silence, a perfect symbolism on it, and such an amazing work!!!! Thank you, and all of course, for making this art tradition happen!!

Mme, you are so lucky, you live in one of the most famous islands in the world, Mykonos, so good swims and a great summer, must go without saying for you. So glad to read you here, and meet you again in your beautiful thinkings, like in your latest article, on seisacthia, thank you for this!!
Thank you for this...thought-provoking...
