symphony of space

Rate: 11 Flag

A group called Symphony of Space with their thrilling aural reconstruction of the magnificence of our universe, as expressed by nonbelievers.

The gospel music of science and reality, at long last.

From their homepage:

The Symphony of Science is a musical project headed by John Boswell designed to deliver scientific knowledge and philosophy in musical form. Here you can watch music videos, download songs, read lyrics and find links relating to the messages conveyed by the music.

The project owes its existence in large measure to the wonderful work of Carl Sagan, Ann Druyan, and Steve Soter, of Druyan-Sagan Associates, and their production of the classic PBS Series Cosmos, as well as all the other featured figures and visuals.

Continuation of the music and videos relies upon generous support from fans and followers. You can make a donation if you wish to contribute support to the project. Thanks to everybody who has donated- enjoy what you find!

Space - astronomy, universe, physics - can't get enough of the stuff - limitless in a self-limiting world - YES! to the cosmic perspective!
Very nice, Greg. Love the beauty of it all and the attempts to put humanity into the cosmic perspective. And I can NEVER get enough of the Cosmos series.

The American Museum of Natural History put out a cool video, done from actual digital imagery, that harks back to exactly what Sagan did in that series. Sort of like that old ‘Powers of Ten’ video, it starts from earth and travels to the edge of the universe. If you haven’t seen it: The Known Universe by AMNH.
Mary, David: isn't it swell? I suppose it's a bit modern and my gospel comparison not quite accurate, but I am so inspired by this, and find it beautiful to listen to.

I will check your link David

thanks!
“gospel music of science and reality” bringing us the gospel of science and reality …

AT LONG LAST!

Thank you for making us aware of this.
Love the cosmos and all it's meanings. Especially love the unknowingness that dwells where science leaves off and exists as we will never fully know or understand. It is comforting to me, that we mere humans do not have all the answers and that they lie beyond the boundaries of science and ego. The music is the universal language of all things seen and unseen. It astounds me, that music, the unseen sense, touchs places beyond our sight and deeper into our core. It moves with the rthymn of the universe and is in tune with the vibrations that exist in the undefined senses, yet to be discovered.
Rick: so lovely, eh?

jane: DO come back and listen. It's even better than u imagine.

Just: swell poetic comment. I refuse to surrender awe and ecstasy to the religious. Theirs is but a subset of the greater human experience.
well...that was trippy! I tend to run the other way whenever the word "science" comes up (except for maybe Mystery Science Theater). Scientists always look kind of deranged & excited & they are way way smarter than I am so that, if I ran into one at a party I would need to drink a lot & fake knowingness while they tried to explain the universe.

I love the idea of using music & visuals to create a kind of "gospel music of science & reality." Much more involving than the science of my childhood. This is science with a kick. Science that can pull in even those of us who flunked it twice in high school.
Greg, I've waited all day so I could sit here and give it the time it deserves. This my last comment of the day (my ass is killing me). I love how they do this, to get kids, and grow-up like me who never were great at science, to learn without knowing it. Thanks for putting this on, it kind of tops off a nice day!
I love the concept that we are children of the stars. Thank you for this.
That was AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
suzie, stellaa, scanner: Yes! I had the same thoughts: kids who love the lyrics will respond to this. It makes these words fresh and profound, and the whole thing is beautiful and moving. thank you

robin: cool, eh? thanks

Stim: and it is literally true. the elements in us are the result of the earliest hydrogen and helium stars exploding, back when those were the only kind and that's all heir was. All the other elements from from the supernovae of the earliest stars. we are truly made of stars

Verbal: yeah!!
Symphony of Space is great. nice choice of Vids :) Check out Boards of Canada, very cool.
Greg, just found you, and this post! So glad I did...adding this post to my list of faves on OS (related to science).
thank you! (and rated!)
