Bio
One of my favorite places to go is about 12 miles out in the Atlantic Ocean...in my little 20 ft. skiff. The clear water is a deep emerald color and the sunlight bounces around and shimmers randomly. I meet survivor sea turtles, bow-riding dolphin, silent sharks, giant rays rocketing out of the sea and backflipping, schools of porgies, sea robins, slashing blues and Spanish mackerel, the occasional whale, and stray birds. I love the quiet and solitude and vastness. I am a way too veteran educator - special education teacher, high school principal, college professor and some other fun waystops. A political junkie, a cowboy in a previous life, a lover of synchronicity in daily life...meditation and prayer, and a believer that the best days are still ahead. My plan is to finish strong. ************************************ I love following politics and current events, but they all take second place to watching a hockey game. I write occasional Op-Ed pieces - usually on educational issues. My two kids are the true loves of my life. ************************************

Empowering women in Nicaragua: A real difference

Rate: 8 Flag

My 25 year old daughter is the Executive Director of the Sister Communities of San Ramon, Nicaragua.  This organization got involved in Nicaragua over 20 years ago just after the Sandinistas prevailed in the Contra War.  They developed and support an eco-tourism lodge and coffee farm called the Finca Esperanza Verde.  They help build schools, rural health clinics and more.  The local citizens decide what they need, are invested in building the facilities, and run and manage everything.  All wages are generally equal to at least 1.5 times the prevailing wage structure.

They have developed and posted a number of videos on YouTube documenting their work.  Check it out.  Pretty powerful way of American citizens helping others to help themselves.  I have been there and witnessed first-hand the quality and lasting effects of the efforts of this particular non-governmental organization. It’s inspiring.

You must be very proud of your daughter, grif. In 1985 I went to Nicaragua with a chorus (we had translated all our songs into Spanish), and performed in schools, at a prison, hospital and other locations. We also did fundraisers so we were able to bring medical aid and other supplies. It is one of the best things I ever did. Rated.
Very inspiring, indeed.
This is the coolest thing I've seen-read this year.
Ok, include last year too. People like your daughter
are the future of this planet's humanity Grif
Erica – it sounds as if that trip made quite an impact on you. Thanks for stopping by.

Sarah – thanks for taking the time to stop and comment.

tr ig – thanks for the kind words. She does her work so effortlessly and without calling attention to herself. She has been so impacted by her time in Nicaragua that she now wants to go to grad school in international development and follow life where it takes her.
This is OUTSTANDING!!
Smiling here Grif.
The future is brighter with things like this happening.
Thank you, and thank her.
This brings America and Americans more respect and honour than all the bombs ever dropped or all the bullets that ever flew. Your daughter, and those like her are the REAL Americans!
.
I spent ten days in Nicaragua in 1999 on a mission/learning trip and I still think about what I learned there every day.
