Bio
Gwen Cooper is the author of the novel "Diary of a South Beach Party Girl," which was published by Simon Spotlight Entertainment in April 2007 and received positive reviews in numerous publications including People, Entertainment Weekly, Harper’s Bazaar, Cosmopolitan, Gotham, the New York Daily News, the Boston Herald, The State, and the Sacramento Bee. Chauncey Mabe of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel hailed it as, “a novel of emotional grit, psychological depth, and narrative confidence. For pop fiction, this is as good as it gets.” Gwen spent five years working in non-profit administration, marketing, and fundraising. She coordinated and led direct-service volunteer activities on behalf of organizations such as Pet Rescue, the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, the Miami Rescue Mission, Best Buddies, Habitat for Humanity, the Daily Bread Food Bank, and Family Resource Center (an organization providing emergency shelter for abused and neglected children). Gwen moved to New York City in 2001 and is writing her second book: "Homer's Odyssey: Tales of an Eyeless Wondercat," which will be published by Random House in September of '09. She lives on Manhattan’s east side with her husband, Laurence. She also lives with her three perfect cats—Scarlett, Vashti, and Homer—who aren’t impressed with any of it.

The Day That Is The Day

Rate: 44 Flag

It was just about ten months ago when I first posted a story on Open Salon called “Night of the Hunter,” about the time when my cat Homer—who I’d adopted some twelve years earlier as an abandoned and unwanted blind kitten—chased off an intruder who turned up in my bedroom in the middle of the night.  The story was a chapter-in-progress from what I hoped would eventually be a book about Homer called Homer’s Odyssey.  It was an idea that I was starting to lose faith in, as for months before the Open Salon post what my agent and I repeatedly heard from publishers was that Homer’s story wasn’t special or distinctive enough…nothing that would make for a viable book.

“Night of the Hunter” was promoted as an Editor’s Pick, and from there it went viral with a speed and scope that even those of us who believed in Homer’s Odyssey were unprepared for.  It turned up on Fark.com, Digg, Reddit, Propeller, pet websites, “women’s stories” websites, and more blogs than I could keep track of.  It was mentioned in a Columbia Journalism Review article about the “gripping reads” that could be found on Open Salon.  I received emails from all over the world from readers who were touched by Homer’s story and eager to share recollections of the cats who’d meant so much in their own lives.  And, in a twist that amused my agent to no end, I heard from agents eager to represent Homer and—most thrillingly—publishers equally eager to publish his story.

Within a week of posting “Night of the Hunter,” I had a firm offer from Random House's Delacorte imprint.  Even when I’d dared to dream big, I’d never dreamt Random House big.

It’s been a grueling and exhilarating ten months, and now The Day is here at last: Homer’s Odyssey: A Fearless Feline Tale, Or How I Learned About Love and Life With a Blind Wonder Cat hits bookstores today.  Foreign rights have already been sold in 10 countries.  The initially modest 20,000 print run has blossomed to upwards of 100,000.  No less a person than the VP of Merchandising for Barnes & Noble told USA Today that Homer “will be huge.”

The past ten months still feel like a dream.  I keep expecting my husband to shake me awake, saying, “Weren’t you going to work on that book proposal today?”

So on this, The Day That Is The Day, I wanted to thank Open Salon and my wonderful, wise, gifted, and endlessly optimistic fellow bloggers who were so integral in getting us to this point.  The name or handle of everybody who commented on the story is mentioned with gratitude in the book’s Acknowledgments page.  But that’s still insufficient thanks for how all of you and Open Salon have changed my life.

And special thanks to "The Bibliofiles" here on Open Salon for the lovely review of the book they left on Amazon.

To see photos of Homer checking out a box of his books, and of Vashti—one of my other three cats—claiming it for her own, visit my blog at www.gwencooper.com (for some reason, the files are too large to load here).

Scarlett, curmudgeon that she is, remains resolutely unimpressed.  Cats!  ;-)

And for those who never read “Night of the Hunter,” you can find it here: http://open.salon.com/blog/gwen_cooper/2008/10/01/night_of_the_hunter

Thank you!!!!!!!!!!

Congratulations on the big day, and -- why not?-- here's to a movie deal. You give us all inspiration.
gwen, many many congratulations to you. i cant imagine the exhilaration and nerves you must be feeling. best wishes for a fun and fulfilling journey. look forward to any stories and insights you might happen upon.
FABULOUS!

That story was the reason I joined OS!

Very happy for you today.
This is just WONDERFUL news! Congratulations to you and Homer for for changing lives and making dreams come true. I can still remember the impact of your original post as if it was yesterday. Keep us posted on your progress! Warm hugs. Champagne for everyone!
Lea Lane--Thank you! A movie sale would be thrilling, but at this point I'm mostly just hoping we rack up a few book sales. :-)

jane smithie--I've been so nervous for weeks that I think I've transcended nerves and reached a zen-like state of preternatural calmness. My husband keeps saying, "I've never seen you so quiet."

wakingupslowly--I had no idea, but it means so much to me to hear that.

Many, many thanks to all three of you!!!
cartouche--Thank you! :-)

Actually, my husband went out last night and brought home caviar and this very fancy canned tuna (the kind I'd feel was way too expensive to slather with mayo and glop onto wheat bread) for the cats.

They have no idea, obviously, that a book about them is coming out today, but they were pretty thrilled with the tuna--tuna days are always the best days around here.
Actually, one funny tidbit about the "process": Homer's been through, I think, four photo shoots already for various publications. They send over a photographer and a lighting person and a couple of assistants...anyway, you really haven't lived till you've seen five grown people lugging around huge cameras and lighting fixtures while following a blind cat, saying, "Wait--I think he's moving over there now!"

My job is usually to keep him in treats and catnip for the duration of the shoot...after about 3 hours of getting whatever he wants as soon as he wants it, Homer drifts off into the most purr-y, satisfied "cat nap" you've ever seen...
Just three days ago I was telling someone about Homer and wondering when your book was coming out. So so SO happy to hear that all is well, and that the book will be published in other languages.
Felicitations!
Gwen, We are all so thrilled for you. It is like a dream...one we all share, and it is a dream well realized with the beginning success of your efforts. I still marvel at the power of a tiny soul, and the love that he is able to generate, and in some measure, change the world.

I look forward to reading the book, and certainly following this thread! Be well and may the sales, exposure and reviews soar!
Fondly, G
Thanks again to you all...

:-)

What feels the most surreal to me about the whole thing are the unforeseeable ramifications of that decision I made--such a long time ago!--to adopt Homer in the first place.

Never ceases to amaze me, the strange ways life works...
Congratulations! What a terrific, exciting, inspirational story. Thanks for sharing it here.
You just put a shine on my day, Gwen. That smile you see in my avatar? The one that currently occupies my face is far bigger in scope. Far bigger.

Congrats to you, perseverance has been rewarded. You and Homer should both be damn proud.

"It's the stuff that dreams are made of...."
Here's to a true Open Salon success story!

Hope to do that video chat soon, Gwen.
Congratulations! What Lea said! And don't forget to invite us to the movie premiere. Really - what a fantastic journey.
Yay Gwen! And, yay Homer! I can't wait to buy this. And it gives me secret joy to have been the first commenter on your original piece...so fun we all got to be a part of this ::clinking glasses:: Here's to many more!
This is great! When dreams come true! I remember your story, vividly, and can't wait for the book. You have given hope to many! A HUGE congratulations! I've got a beautiful gray kitty, too! I showed Tufa (my kitty) Homer's picture. He was not impressed. Cats! ;-D
Wow--thanks so much for all the great responses!!!

:-)

I'm flying out the door right now to catch a train to DC, where tomorrow morning I will be appearing on NPR (she said casually, as if going on NPR was something that happened to her every day). This will probably be my last check-in until tomorrow evening--and I promise to provide more individual responses then--but, until then, THANK YOU!!!
:-)
:-)
:-)

And, Kerry--many, many thanks. Re: video, you need only name the day...
How absolutely wonderful for you and for Homer! It's always nice when good things happen to good people.
Wow. This was one of the first stories to really capture me here on OS. I still have it bookmarked. Congratulations on the whole thing.
Gwen, congratulations on all of your success! That's is quite a story and will certainly be an encouragement to others who are involved in the blogosphere.
Yay! Here's to success stories, and brave kitties, and dreams coming true. I'm so, so happy for you and Homer both!
This gives me some hope too. I hope that Homer becomes a best seller.
Fantastic, Gwen! As a passionate Kitty Mama, I can't wait to read the book. Many, many congratulations!
Whee! It's here! I'm so happy for you, Gwen. It's a wonderful story and definitely one that needs and deserves a much larger audience. I feel privileged to have been able to read "Night of the Hunter" here first. Now to order a copy from my independent bookseller. :)
How inspiring! Congratulations!
SNOOPY DANCE!!!!!! SNOOPY DANCE!!!!!!

Whoooo HOOOOOOOOO!
Congratulations to you!!!
Congrats! That's awesome.
Gwen, congratulations! And your anecdote about the photo shoot with a blind kitty made me laugh out loud.

May there be many books to follow, from you and other OSers! I see folks in the comments who have great books in them, not mentioning names, but at least one of them ought to be regularly bugged about it.
Wow! Many congratulations! Homer deserves extra cat treats today!
A true Cinderella story, the kind we all dream of. Congrats to you... and, of course, to Homer!!!
Congratulations!!! I am jealousing!!!
Congratulations!!! Not my cat, not my book, but I'm sitting here at my office desk crying for you and Homer I'm sooooo happy! Here's wishing that everyone should be blessed with such an inspiration as your kitty. So where can we line up for our own autographed copy?!!! Me and my kitties will be listening to hear you tomorrow on NPR. Hugs and scritchies.
I just went back and read "Night of The Hunter," and WOW! You deserve recognition! What an articulate and wonderfully written story! I am wishing you all the luck with your newly published book and am heading to Amazon right now! I pray you get a movie deal!!! YES!!!!!
I am going to resist the urge to write a blind cat story for my own blog and just say congratulations.

Hardly nobody gets published these days. It is an epic achievement.
Congratulations to you and Homer! What a great story...thank you! xox

BUMP BUMP BUMP
I just finished Homer's Odyssey in the coffee shop this morning, then I got into my car, turned on the radio -- and there you were! You were *wonderful*. And the book? The book is beyond wonderful. I absolutely loved it. It is going to be a HUGE hit, I'm positively sure of it.

HUGE congratulations Gwen!!! Woo-hoo!!!
Congratulations! I hope you have great success with your wonderful book. I loved the story when I read that post months ago.

It's an OS and cat miracle.
I'm listening to you on The Diane Rehm Show right now. I'm very proud of you (and will return to read this later, I can't listen and write at the same time).
This is great! I'll have to get the Diane Rehm interview on podcast.
Wow. Congrats!
So I just walked in the door about five minutes ago...haven't been online since about noon yesterday (in transit to/from DC, and didn't bring my computer with me)...

And now I'm sitting here like an idiot with tears running down my face from all of your wonderful, WONDERFUL comments and good wishes. I am overwhelmed. I don't know what to say.

Also having trouble seeing the keyboard due to aforementoined blurring eyes...

I thank you.
I thank you.
I thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Well done, you.

I'm so proud and delighted. Not a bit surprised, though.

Sasha "The Weasel" sends a can of the finest tuna to her amazing Vice President (see The Weasel for President and her Open Salon Cabinet).

Keep up the great work. And tell Laurence, "You're the man!" That's how my Iditarod book came into being. Steve said, "There must be other fans who are also frustrated that all the information about the race is so scattered. Now that you've collected it, why don't you write a book for the other fans?" Enjoy the ride. You deserve it.

Sasha notes that your cats will keep you humble. ;)

All four paws WAY up!!!
Couldn't happen to a better person--or a better cat. Congratulations to both of you!
Hey everybody - Gwen and Homer just made the NYT bestseller list for this week!!!! Yippee and congratulations!!!
I knew there was a reason my publisher sent me flowers yesterday...

;-)
Gwen--As a cat lover and librarian, I just want you to know that I have been telling everyone I know to read your wonderful book. Parts of it have haunted me. There's just one thing that has worried me--and I even dreamed about it! How did you descend those 31 floors in the dark with three cats? Congratulations--and thank you for giving joy to so many others. Purrs & hugs to Homer (and the girls). Jennifer
Gwen, I hope you see this comment although it is rather late in coming! I am currently reading your wonderful book and my cat, Tiger Lilly, insists on resting on my belly as I read it. (I tend to read lying prone on the sofa whenever I'm totally engrossed in a book). She seems to sense the story is about another cat and wants to be a part of the experiene. I am enjoying every verbal mouthful of the book!!!
