Our History Was All Stories Til The Truth was Excavated

I love the History Channel. It is chalked full of information on just about every subject in our past. From watching it I have learned that history is forever changing with new evidence found.  On the channel is this fantastic show called Museum Secrets.

One of those changing stories is regarding the Trojan War. Homer wrote in the Iliad and the Odyssey what most scholars call mythology.

But what if it wasn’t myth? What if what Homer wrote was fact indeed?

Truth be told I always hoped it was. The Gods and Goddesses existed as well as demi Gods such as Achilles who was written about in the Trojan War. It’s a known fact many of our history was wiped away from leaders of the past. As a matter of fact Akhenaten who reined 3500 years ago ended any belief of multiple Gods and his people were ordered to only follow one.

At one time Homer’s Iliad was known to be total fiction. As years went by and archeological digs took place Homer’s story seemed to be proven more fact than fiction.

Troy was uncovered in western Turkey but more surprising the grave of Menelaus was found near Mycenae and he was not buried alone. According to the History Channel the inscription on the grave clearly shows he was buried with his wife Helen!

The story that Paris and Helen ran off is questionable. The face that sailed a thousand ships has some dark history to her. She apparently dabbled in the occult and could have been a sorceress. This is known from the artifacts buried with her. Helen’s face also was not the most noted attribute. According to the program Helen had huge boobs. Along with her sorcery historians wonder if she had an agenda of her own in the Trojan War.

I find it baffling how Homers writings were always known as fiction through history until history was unraveled to find some truths in his stories. So are we to assume only part was truth?  I have difficulty in believing this due to the fact Homer was a historian. Known as the teacher of Greece.

Look what happened to Hypatia in Alexandria, Her philosophy and knowledge was revered until religion changed and she was murdered for her beliefs and practices. Many of the scrolls and knowledge of that time was lost.

It would seem religion and leadership impacts belief through history. Most were forced to believe what they were told and forget what they knew or death was the penalty. This has happened for centuries through time. What we learned in the history books of the past seem to be rewritten on a regular basis as truths come out.

Does it not make you think with all we have learned through history was all a type of people control? Whether it is through fear or religion governments steer the population in the direction they want their people to go.

Even in modern day, George Dubya Bush did the same thing. Build fear among the people so they become totally dependant on the government.

I guess while some things in history change, while others stay the same.
