One man protested the protesters. "You are what you protest!" he fumed.
- Sarcasm Alley

That's one of my favorite lines from my magical mystery novel. And if I had made a sign it would have said exactly that: You Are What You Protest. We are a funny, funny people! Blindly fumbling around seeking approval, desperate to keep our truths inside all the while desperate to free them. That, of course, is the source of all war on this planet.

And frankly, that's what I feared when I headed out to Westboro Baptist Church's protests here in Arlington today. For those who haven't heard of these clowns yet, here's a little Wiki blurb:

The Westboro Baptist Church (WBC) is an Independent Baptist church and hate group known for its anti-homosexuality and its protest activities, which include picketing funerals and desecrating the American flag. It is headed by Fred Phelps and consists mostly of members of his large family. Located in Topeka, Kansas, United States, its first public service was held on the afternoon of Sunday, November 27, 1955.

The group came into the national spotlight in 1998, when they were featured on CNN for picketing the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a young man from Wyoming who was beaten to death by two men because of his homosexuality. Westboro has protested at the funerals of people ranging from Fred Rogers to Coretta Scott King to Jerry Falwell.

They hate pretty much anything that breathes but really it's obvious they loathe themselves above all and these protests are a cry for help. But I don't mind free expression as long as it's nonviolent. Don't mind it all, and in fact I find it refreshing. I know a lot people have gotten riled up about them but I can't get really upset over flat earthers like this. They're not persuasive, just pathetic. And I see all sorts of patheticness every day, some just more socially acceptable than the rest.

Two protests were planned today in Arlington. You can see the Westboros entire protest schedule at their website: godhatesfags.com. (Earth 2010 AD, you just can't make this stuff up). The first protest was truly ungodly as it started at 9 AM and that was just too early for my lazy bones and I only caught the tail end of it.

Escorted Out
I got there in time to see the Westboro clan escorted out by the police.

Later, another protest was held at a Catholic church. I made sure I was early for that one.

Church
Approaching the church, spotting a couple of cops.

Protesters
The Westboro picketers were just getting set up

Counter Protesters Side 2
But a much larger counter protest was waiting for them!

Like I said, I was expecting contention, ill will and bad vibes. I found just the opposite! It was hard not to walk around smiling. Felt more like church camp than anything else - maybe a hyper-inflated version, though. But it was great and a lot of fun and I wished it had lasted a lot longer than the usual 30 minutes these protests do.

It was tough taking pics without a 35mm camera. Mine was overwhelmed by glare and fuzziness anytime I tried to zoom. I ended up circling around, taking as many shots as possible hoping I could get a couple of good ones. But I made out OK, finally getting close enough for some clarity. First I wanted to check out the Westboro signs and see if I could decipher how their minds - or whatever - were wired.

Protesters Signs 4
As much as I love psychological puzzles, I gotta admit I'm stumped on being pro oil spill. It certainly wasn't an act of God. The other sign is pure Bill Maher.

Protesters 5
These pretty much run the gamut. I wonder if they protested the [anti-Christ 43rd President] same way as they do Obama (though the "Coward" sign could certainly be a reference to our infamous Dallas resident). These signs certainly speak of those at war with themselves.

Protesters Kid
Poor dumb kids didn't know what they were doing, they just want mom and dad's approval like all kids do.

Both Sides
Here you can see the approximate distance between the two. The police wouldn't allow any interaction.

The other side was much more fun! Many of the signs had me chuckling out loud and despite feelings running very high it never ran over the top to the point of verbal violence. If so, the Westboros would have truly won. I really, really wanted to interact with all this passion but I had made a mental commitment to be Switzerland in all this. I'm too much the advocate.

Cop Chewy
When you got a cop talking to a Wookie, you know it's a fun protest!

Counter Protesters 4
I got in behind them for a closer look.

Church 2
Church members were inside, services still going on.

Counter Protesters 6
While outside was pure chaos! I was nervous about the impending reaction of the churchgoers. Dogma breeds more dogma and I would hate to see that circle begin here.

Street 2
Passing motorists were targets as well.

Car Finger
This car gave the counter protesters the finger but there were many honks and thumbs up from passers by. A loud cheer would go up whenever that happened.

Church Patrons
And then out came the church patrons!

Church Patrons 2
They're having a WTF moment!

Cool Catholics
Now, I despise the Catholic church as much as anyone. Any organization rooted in witch burning is a bent one and by God if you come to my front door with a torch I'm going to gun you down. But I don't hold it against anyone for being Catholic or anything else, just so long as, you know, you don't expect me to think it's important or anything.

This little group of Catholics gathered behind the counter protesters and were very cool and supportive, staying the whole time. It was a beautiful thing to see.

Interview
Although interaction with the Westboros was forbidden, this camera crew somehow managed to snag an interview. I asked them later if they were going to put it online and they said yes, at http://www.liberalmediafilms.com/.

Bitch
This woman took serious issue with the presence of the counter protesters, asking the cop if he could do something about them. He explained that the church knew the Westboro picketers were coming (who stayed on the public sidewalk the whole time) and gave permission to the counter protesters to be on their property. He also explained about that pesky First Amendment. She reluctantly understood but left with a loud declaration of, "This country's going to...heck!" I could tell she really wanted to say "hell".

So who won and who lost this day? Nobody and everybody. The Westboros made fools of themselves but got the attention they wanted (though one suspects they were itching for verbal violence). Certainly the church acquitted itself well, allowing events to unfold and not be bottled up. The cops were professional and restrained. But most of all the counter protesters won the day, not responding to hate with hate (though a few of the signs went too far). The tone was happy and cheery, with chants and singing. You should have been there!!!

I leave you with a few of my favorite signs. You can see all the pics at my Flickr site.

Looking for a sign in the middle of the night

From the Fort Worth Star Telegram:

-ARLINGTON Protests at two Arlington churches organized by Westboro Baptist Church on Sunday morning were drowned out by more than 100 counterprotesters who rebuked the controversial group.

About a dozen members of Westboro Baptist Church picketed at Fielder Road Baptist Church and later at Most Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, two of four North Texas religious institutions they planned to visit Sunday.

Most of the group's members were children related to Fred Phelps, the church leader, who was not there.

At both Arlington events, Westboro members were outmatched more than 10-to-1 by counterprotesters, many of whom opted for irreverence over anger as their weapon against the Topeka, Kan., group's message.

Westboro members' signs included: "Your Pastor is a Liar," "You Hate God," "God Hates Israel" and "Pray For More Dead Soldiers."

Some of the signs from counterprotesters were: "God Hates Signs," "I Love Pie" and "Cheerios Lowers Your Cholesterol."

Counterprotesters also held signs featuring pop culture references including the Twilight series, Harry Potter and Monty Python.

Abigail Phelps, a spokeswoman for Westboro Baptist Church, said the group chose the two Arlington churches because they are "representative of all so-called Christian churches in this area." They targeted a Catholic church because of the international priest sexual-abuse scandal, she said.

Both churches encouraged their congregants to ignore the Westboro protesters, representatives said.

Arlington police kept the two groups separated at both events.

Abigail Phelps said Sunday that the church likes to see large counterprotests at its rallies.

"Of course we want them to come see the signs," she said. "That's why we're holding the signs. We don't put our light under a bushel. My hope is that they'll get the words. God controls what they do with the words."

Counterprotester Kitty Miller, 35, of Arlington held a sign that read "God Loves Fairies."

"I think what they're doing is horrible, and it's hurtful, and they made the mistake of coming to my city," Miller said.

Patrick Murphy, 25, of Fort Worth held a sign reading, "God Hates Fax (but loves email)," mocking one of Westboro's signs that included an epithet against homosexuals.

It was the first protest he ever attended, he said.

"I'm doing this for people going to church, so they just don't see hate," Murphy said.

Counterprotest organizer Charlotte Duncan, 53, of Arlington said the rallies were mostly publicized via Facebook.

Bryan Atkinson, 35, of Arlington said he went to the counterprotest at the Catholic church dressed as a cow to help people smile.

His wife and two kids went too. The family opted to attend the protest instead of church, he said.

"We can go to church 52 Sundays a year, but the crazies are only in town this weekend," Atkinson said.

Abigail Phelps said Westboro Baptist Church has been protesting around the country for 20 years.

"This entire nation and the world has been saturated with these words, and we have bound this nation," she said. "So yeah, we've accomplished exactly what the lord God intended us to accomplish."

The group's newer signs include: "Thank God For Oil Spills." Phelps said God caused the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico as punishment for "antichrist Obama" and the country's refusal to repent of its sins.

As a group in a car was leaving Most Blessed Sacrament and turning onto North Davis Drive, the driver asked Abigail Phelps why she was thanking God for the oil spill. Phelps shouted that priests are sexually abusing boys.

"Keep those babies away from those priests!" Phelps yelled.

Each side briefly yelled at the other. The driver finally sped away.

Why couldn't they protest in the Fall? It's fricking July for God's sake!
Sorry, CA, I don't swing that way. Hope that doesn't make you even more bitter than you already are. (Oh wait, yes I do.)
Harry, this is fantastic and is a Zumapick!
a queer smiles at the last pict
thanks for the education. amazing stuff. R-
Great photo essay. They were in my neighborhood last summer. The kids must have the same "How I spent my summer vacation" essay every September._r
This was a great post. Great take on the whole thing. Thank you.
Chewbacca as a Team Edward member and the reference to the Giant Flying Turtle provoked a sense of peace in me since I think we now have Westboro's ticket. Nullify by wild swings of humor.
Those counter-protesters had some great signs! I love the one, "this is a sign - not from God".

They are bizarre-o, those Westboro's. They come up here a few times a year. It's always so damn sad to see their kids dragged about.

Good post, Harry.
Good pics and I enjoyed your observations.
Maybe this is they key to dealing with these Westboro idiots...counter-demonstrations that out-do their silliness. But I still want to find a way to seriously fuck them up for what they do at funerals. Those are private times for families.

Someone should find a way to make every private moment of the Westboro lives pure Hell. But then again, perhaps if God is an Old Testament just one rather than a New Testament forgiving one, they may just find that Hell.
The Westboro Church protests are law suit bait. The clan head and a significant number of his children are lawyers, although Phelps is now disbarred. He was a civil rights litigator in the past and he now uses the First Amendment to male money. His family protests to provoke a reaction they can file suit over, collect judgments and that is how they support themselves. Like most things, it is a scam. They love it when the opposition or police get physical. $$$. monkey fingered.
Good report. Better photos than I could take.
At first I thought the website you posted, godhatesfags.com was a joke. I was stunned when I discovered it wasn't - but I really couldn't bring myself to investigate the site any further. Yikers! So many mean, unhappy people. I'm so glad you were there, armed with your camera and wonderful reportage. Your captions are priceless, "When you got a cop talking to Wookie, you know it's a fun protest!" Favorite Sign: "I was promised donuts :- ( " I've never heard of the Westboro Baptist Church, and I may have to bring myself to check their schedule. I wonder if they have the cajones to come to NYC? Thank you so much for bringing this to my attention, and in such a captivating fashion!
A nice ramble thru the Alternate Reality of Religious Disease that dares to Speak Its Name.

These noony brains came her to New Paltz NY, and my fellow New Paltzian OS'r Jeremiah Horrigan wrote a droll piece about it. Basically the whole town R and L united and responded with old Beatles songs.

Basically they are right though. The Bible does support their positions, pretty much. Which is an indication of how moral the teachings are in a 2000 year-old transcribed oral fantasy by desert nomads.
Beautiful piece of work, Harry! Just wonderful. On a side note, I think that during my "'I'm Not Gay' Missionary Tour," we may have played at that church! I love the lightheartedness of the counterprotesters . . . that's such an excellent approach.
Awesome! I am glad that the counter protesters didn't stoop to violence. I can't take those God-hates-fags people too seriously. They hate so many things that I am surprised there was no 'God hates Fruity Pebbles' sign.
very cool.
although i have to admit that my favorite pic was the WTF moment one- that one made me howl- poor ladies
crap, I commented before rating again- reposting to rate
Julie, I was lucky to capture that moment but there was a whole range of emotions that day.

Delia, Fruity Pebbles are my favorite. I'd of damn sure been protesting that!

It seems like a cool church, Owl. You need to pass through again sometime!

Greg, I would put forth "Love thy neighbor" as to not be fantasy but reality for survival. Any book can be misinterpreted, even an auto repair manual.

Notes, yes they do seem to be a living Monty Python skit. Hard to believe even they take themsleves seriously.

Matt, it was fun playing reporter but draining and hot.

BBE, yes! Always follow the money. Have you seen the Casino Jack documentary? It's all about following the money.

wolf, humor is the absolute key. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the good humor.

Thanks, sophie. I didn't want to be political in my observations.

That sign cracked me up too, waking!

Linnn, you would have really felt had you been there, no doubt.

Thanks, Charlie.

Joan, if they overcome their childhood I'm sure those kids could write a book!

Dave, I most wanted to spread the word on the counter-protesters deft handling of the situation.

Irania, it was truly an "awww" moment.

A Zumapick! Got a Tink pick too not too long ago. I'm on a roll! Thanks!
These Westbroro freaks are a real piece of stupid. Fuck em'

-R-
Ah, Miko-san, I wish you could have been there with me. It was a blast and it really made the Westboros seem silly and small.
These people have their religion drilled into their heads when they’re little children. In many cases they literally have the truth beat into them. This impairs any ability to think rationally. There are several researchers who have investigated the cause of these religious beliefs, including Philip Greven and Alice Miller and they have found that many religions teach parents to literally beat their children into submission starting before they even learn how to talk. Now this mostly happens behind closed doors but in the past it was considered acceptable and desirable and it was done in the open. This is what leads to an enormous amount of violence including wars.
The film "White Ribbon" demonstrated that.
