Vehicle of Desire

Rate: 11 Flag

 needle

It is written permanently in ink

taken from soft sketches to bold color

from where is the need to own this image?

from where is the will to bear the needle?

from deeper than the will to bare soft skin

from somewhere deep enough to offer blood

The true cost of owning is paid in blood

like dissolves like but this doesn’t like ink

beading up like fresh dew drops on the skin

deep red is overcome by bright color

laid down, laid in, inlaid by the needle

picturing, puncturing, a new image

The idea, the reason for this image

was carried for a long time in the blood

thought, need, desire, all greet the needle

a question, it’s answer, revealed in ink

is there more to the pigment than color?

this is known only when it becomes skin

Inner self is outer self on the skin

where self hopes for itself in the image

whose sign of recognition is color

and vehicle of desire is blood

through the medium of message in ink

the art of instruments is to needle

Accuracy, the way of the needle

and with it a new way is found to skin

a cat as well as an old way to ink

the outlines of the idea and image

that which was once only dreamed of in blood

so that the inside is left to color

The heart is that which chooses the color

while the hand guides the way of the needle

the heart is that which can quicken the blood

as the hand will calmly smooth out the skin

the heart is that which does love the image

as the hand lovingly applies the ink

Filled with ink is the needle empowered

to let the color animate the skin

and the image,  the blood to enliven

Nice work my friend. I can't bring myself to the permanent aspect of a tattoo. If they were to make it more easily affordable to remove them, I'd express myself. I think back half way in my life at age 22 I would probably have ten basketball tattoos on my body. At 44 probably a Dick Cheney head with an arrow through it. At 66, who knows? All I know is that I fear as gravity takes over my body, the image may change form, and not for the better.

But I truly dig tats on others. I love the art form, it's jut the permanence that causes me to back out.

a SESTINA!!! You rock. These are so difficult. I've heard other poets curse and curse them. I want to see photos of the new tattoos.
beautiful poem by the way. I'm so glad you're writing.
The hard part is getting the separate stanzas to relate to one another, which as you can see, I made no effort on. If they relate, it's by accident.
Thanks!
cool sestina. the structure fits the subject and emotion. i've always found "ink" somewhat intriguing ... it's like wearing a story on your skin. --rated-- (thanks for the advice )
K.O.B., I understand the permanence issue. What tends to happen is that once you get one, you want more. EAch one becomes a record of where you were in your life at that point.
Thanks!
I realize there is more to body that my generational view of:
When I wanted to tick off my parents, I grew my hair long.

So I won't impose my value judgment on anyone. It's just not for me. rated.

All I can think of is the lyrics to "Lydia the tattooed lady."

Your writing is first class.
hatchetface, my friend, you have captured the essence of being tattooed, of choosing the tattoo, of submitting to the needle's whim and the joy of seeing your body become enhanced by the heart and the thought and the ink and the blood. Some day maybe I'll show you mine.

FLW is right. You rock.
This is beautifully written. It really paints a lovely picture of the whole process.

I remember when I was young, the only experience I had with anyone getting a tattoo was at the local carnival where someone had set up a make-shift studio out of a camper trailer. Locals would get hammered in the beer tent and stumble over to get their ink. Let’s just say, the product probably came from a different source of ‘desire.’ Just another way that tattoos mark where someone’s been in their life!

Since then, I have gained a better understanding and appreciation for the art. But, I still wonder, sometimes, when I see some middle aged guy walking around with a SpongBob tattoo – what were you thinking?
Mr. Mustard, Perhaps that's the secret to getting a sestina to make sense, choosing your subject carefully. Thanks.

O.E.S. "some people need the mark", A line from the terrible and misogynistic 1970's movie, Tattoo. The rest of us just want it. As for music, don't forget Tattoo Love Boys by the Pretenders and Tattoo Vampires by the Blue Oyster Cult. Thanks

Coyote, You could always find a reason to post a photo of it. Claim it's on someone else, we'll never know. Verily, dost thou rock as well!

Aprilshowers, That's how tatooing was up until about the late seventies when a real renaissance began, largely in California and in Holland as well as few other hot spots. Thanks.
yes, absolutely.

ready for another one.
As a poetry lover and a "desirer," I find this astonishing. Thank you, so much, for bringing me to see this!
I do believe that you might be the alchemist artist who can create a gold - not yellow - that is not toxic. I will have a gold and green Celtic knot design engraved upon my ankle some day, like some nuns wear a wedding band. In time, my friend, in time.
