Chaz Bono, Dancing With the Stars,&The Transgender Community

Chaz Bono, DWTS

In the past year, Chaz Bono has become the unofficial spokesperson for the transgender community. Right now, gay marriage in the US is an issue that most people are familiar with to some extent, while transgender individuals still puzzle and scare some people. With the opposition that gay Americans have received for demanding the same rights attained by their heterosexual neighbors, you can only imagine how a transgender individual would be received. The subject itself is still very taboo and saved for satirical movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Often, transgender and transsexual individuals are considered more of a freak or joke than individuals with thoughts and feelings.

When I heard that Chastity Bono was going through a sex change, I was surprised as much as anyone else. I've known several transgender people, none of whom have made the transition. It is understandable why there are not more people in the world like Chaz Bono. Most people would got be open and comfortable being their true selves when it so brazenly goes against the grain of what public opinion currently deems acceptable. But imagine what it would feel like-to be born in the wrong body. That is often how a transgender person describes the way they feel about themselves.

One of my best friends, Jordan, not her birth name but a name she gave herself at the age of 5, recently came out in a big way. From the time she was a little girl, she was attracted to the same sex. In addition to these feelings, she also felt like a boy trapped inside a girl's body. Growing up, Jordan was considered a tomboy by many and dressed like a boy. She gravitated towards sports and even then, her androgynous look was no accident.

Me and Jordan, Summer 2011

Jordan grew up and as an adult was an undeniably beautiful woman, however, the prettier she looked the more uncomfortable she felt. Slowly she chopped off her beautiful ebony hair a few inches at a time, until it was very short. This was the beginning of her transformation into the Jordan she always wanted to be; the Jordan she always felt like on the inside.

Soon after she told her friends and family that she was a lesbian. Everyone was supportive though some were confused. Jordan lived in small town New Hampshire, a state known for its conservative family values. Rather than shun her, her presence actually opened up the minds of people who believed in traditional Christian values. Though their religion disagrees with homosexuality and likely transgenderism, her community still treats her with love and acceptance.

I greatly admire my friend Jordan's courage to come out and unapologetically be the person she was meant to be. I also admire Chaz Bono for the same reason. People like them reshape the public's views transgender people by being in the forefront. By putting themselves out there, more and more people will understand what it means to be a transgender individual.

So will Chaz Bono's gig on Dancing with the Stars offend some people? Most definitely. What's more important is the courage that Chaz lends and will continue to lend to other transgenders who haven't yet gained the courage to be themselves. His appearance on Dancing could make a big difference in a lot of lives.

People like Chaz and Jordan serve as inspirations for all; like them, we should always speak the truth within our hearts and strive to honor the unique thumb print within our spirits in a bold and unapologetic way.

Hayley.. my email friend in Alabama is mortified he is on.
I say Bravo to the producers and please dont turn him into some sort of circus freak.

HUGGGGGGGGGGGGGGg
Chaz seems to have really come into his own. What a great chance to show his stuff.
My neighbor, in this small rural Minnesota had the second operation in her change from woman to man and they are stressed but supportive.
rated with love
I think the producers made a brave choice and I look forward to seeing how Chaz performs on the show as well as all the others. It's going to be another great season.
Linda, I think the majority is uncomfortable with transgender people. Hopefully people will gain a better understanding of transgender people and become more accepting

Poetess That's great to hear :)

Miguela Agreed, I look forward to watching as well
I hope that Chaz can do for the transgender community what Ellen was able to for Lesbians. By putting a face and personality to the label hopefully we can turn people around enough to let go of their preconceived beliefs to actually see the person for who they are. rated
Awesome! It might get me to watch the show!
Rosycheeks That's exactly what I was thinking- Ellen made such a difference in the country's perception of the Gay Community. I hope Chaz will do the same for the Transgender Community

jramelle Thank-you! I am really excited about seeing Chaz on DWTS. I watch the show anyways, but the platform they are giving him (for ratings or not) may make such a huge difference in the lives of many!

Kevin Thank-you!
Thanks for sharing this really thoughtful post...I love the image that we should "honor the unique thumb print within our spirits." Then we can all allow ourselves and each other to breathe a little more freely.
Gender and sexuality are fascinating subjects, and Jordan is a great role model for people still in the closet and wanting to emerge. For my novel Secret Choices, I did a lot of research about gender issues and was amazed by how much little-known information surrounds them.
I'm proud of Chaz and of Cher too. They are heros. DWTS will be good for him. The country and the world is better because of the brave choices he made.
You are right! They are inspirations to us all. To truly step up and be our authentic selves is a tough challenge for all of us. How much tougher still when it does go against accepted "norms"? I applaud DWTS and Chaz and your friend Jordan for having the courage to take that step.
Well done and congrats on the EP. I saw Chaz on Bill Maher's show and he seemed full of love and acceptance. Any avenue of getting the message of love and acceptance out there is cool with me!
I didn't know Chaz was going to be on DWTS. Wonderful! He'll be very inspiring to a lot of people.
Haley:

I also heard Nancy Grace was going to be on DWTS (gonna be a strange season, 4 sho). I'm a little concerned by the significant weight gain of Chaz. Is that from injections of testosterone?

Cher is a super mom. She embraced Chaz every step of the way. And has anyone else been reading that Shilo Pitt (Brangela's birth child) also refuses to wear "girl" clothes, insists on boy clothes and toys. They too, are allow "her" to express "herself".

Congrats on EP!
" By putting themselves out there, more and more people will understand what it means to be a transgender individual."

I dont think anyone can understand what it means to be a transgendered individual just because someone puts himself out there. Not unless you experience it yourself.
Clay- thank-you , glad you appreciated it!

Hawley- Agreed, I'm really proud to call her my friend

Z indeed

Painting- you said it!

Rei- thank-you!

Kate- not sure about the weight gain- - it is great- the feeling of peace in being able to be who you are cannot be artificially replicated
I am deeply sympathetic to the struggles of Chaz Bono and the transgender community. I believe that their journey shines a light on the stultifying rigidity of gender roles in human culture. I once read that the hard binary of masculine vs feminine is only the portal of a doorway. One needs to walk through that door and have the courage simply to be "I".
While I applaud this move, I think that next season they should take it up a notch and take a bow toward the working classes and rename it "Dancing with the Homeless" and force top notch dance instructors to teach dancing to the unemployed and destitute, while also paying them a living wage. I think this is a very important issue, since real unemployment in America is roughly 15 percent and far higher than what the gvt tells us.

All these TV shows are pure distraction.
Such a show would also force Americans to open their eyes to the realities of poverty and want in America, something that many of them are trying very hard to ignore, something that could easily result in bloodshed and violence if ignored for too long.
I wish Chaz would share some his testosterone with me. I'm turning into Alan Alda.
Funny thing...my impressions of Chastity Bono were rather negative. Seemed like she never smiled even as a child...and on those rare occasions when she did, the smile seemed forced.

Now that he is Chaz...the smile seems ever present...and real as can be.

Hope Chaz can make a positive difference for people who need a champion in this judgemental world.
There is nothing that illustrates an issue as well as a personal story like this. I think the trans-gender issue would matter little when it comes to an issue like ballroom dancing, at least I hope not.
Monsieur - Perhaps we will eventually evolve into that way of thinking- would be nice wouldn't it?

RW I think the government should bring back the WPA like they did during the 1st depression

Frank- As a woman I agree- she looked very uncomfortable and looks much more satisfied and happy as Chaz- kudos to him

Brazen agreed and thank-you
Only GAYS watch Dancing With The Stars so about 1% of the USA will be watching it . Maybe another 10% just for a laugh or two! How did Chaz get on the show anyway? Miss Chaz has never made a record or acted, I don't get it. All she did was put on weight and grow a beard. I guess that will get you on Dancing With The Bizarre's!
I hate to be the one to mention this. Chaz IS NOT a he - unless there are testicles involved. More than likely, Chaz is a She-He, which is the opposite of a He-She.

Plus, there is a very strong likelihood of mental illness involved in anyone wanting to surgically "change one's sex."

Just because a female cuts the hair short, gets tattoos and rides a Harley, does not mean that she is a man - and vice versa.

I used to counsel veterans. Once a month a guy would come into the office. He was about 6’3” tall, about 285 pounds, had a very bad body odor problem, had long hair, painted fingernails, and he preferred wearing a dress. Also, he was butt ugly.

He told me that he wanted to change his sex to female. He said that he was going through the required counseling prior to having the surgery. I asked him if his counselor was open and honest with him. He said he wasn’t sure.

I told him, you have too much baggage to change your sex. He asked why. I told him that if he changed his sex to female, he would be a 6’3” female, at 285 pounds, with very bad body odor, long hair, painted fingernails, wearing a dress and butt ugly. How could that possibly be a more favorable outcome? How would that enhance your dating possibilities or your sex life? The short answer is – it will not make any changes.

I do not know if he went ahead with the surgery, but I did give him something to think about before the surgery.

Chaz made the choice to become a She-He. Many people will not respect that. Cut some slack, and wish Chaz a healthy, happy and prosperous future. Everyone deserves that chance.
You're quite right Frank. Being a gay journalist I've dealt with Chaz many times in the past -- back when he was Chastity. An unfailingly nice person Chastity had an air of sadness that has happily lifted by becoming Chaz.
