Chaz Bono, Dancing With the Stars,&The Transgender Community
Chaz Bono, DWTS
In the past year, Chaz Bono has become the unofficial spokesperson for the transgender community. Right now, gay marriage in the US is an issue that most people are familiar with to some extent, while transgender individuals still puzzle and scare some people. With the opposition that gay Americans have received for demanding the same rights attained by their heterosexual neighbors, you can only imagine how a transgender individual would be received. The subject itself is still very taboo and saved for satirical movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Often, transgender and transsexual individuals are considered more of a freak or joke than individuals with thoughts and feelings.
When I heard that Chastity Bono was going through a sex change, I was surprised as much as anyone else. I've known several transgender people, none of whom have made the transition. It is understandable why there are not more people in the world like Chaz Bono. Most people would got be open and comfortable being their true selves when it so brazenly goes against the grain of what public opinion currently deems acceptable. But imagine what it would feel like-to be born in the wrong body. That is often how a transgender person describes the way they feel about themselves.
One of my best friends, Jordan, not her birth name but a name she gave herself at the age of 5, recently came out in a big way. From the time she was a little girl, she was attracted to the same sex. In addition to these feelings, she also felt like a boy trapped inside a girl's body. Growing up, Jordan was considered a tomboy by many and dressed like a boy. She gravitated towards sports and even then, her androgynous look was no accident.
Jordan grew up and as an adult was an undeniably beautiful woman, however, the prettier she looked the more uncomfortable she felt. Slowly she chopped off her beautiful ebony hair a few inches at a time, until it was very short. This was the beginning of her transformation into the Jordan she always wanted to be; the Jordan she always felt like on the inside.
Soon after she told her friends and family that she was a lesbian. Everyone was supportive though some were confused. Jordan lived in small town New Hampshire, a state known for its conservative family values. Rather than shun her, her presence actually opened up the minds of people who believed in traditional Christian values. Though their religion disagrees with homosexuality and likely transgenderism, her community still treats her with love and acceptance.
I greatly admire my friend Jordan's courage to come out and unapologetically be the person she was meant to be. I also admire Chaz Bono for the same reason. People like them reshape the public's views transgender people by being in the forefront. By putting themselves out there, more and more people will understand what it means to be a transgender individual.
So will Chaz Bono's gig on Dancing with the Stars offend some people? Most definitely. What's more important is the courage that Chaz lends and will continue to lend to other transgenders who haven't yet gained the courage to be themselves. His appearance on Dancing could make a big difference in a lot of lives.
People like Chaz and Jordan serve as inspirations for all; like them, we should always speak the truth within our hearts and strive to honor the unique thumb print within our spirits in a bold and unapologetic way.

My neighbor, in this small rural Minnesota had the second operation in her change from woman to man and they are stressed but supportive.
rated with love
Poetess That's great to hear :)
Miguela Agreed, I look forward to watching as well
jramelle Thank-you! I am really excited about seeing Chaz on DWTS. I watch the show anyways, but the platform they are giving him (for ratings or not) may make such a huge difference in the lives of many!
Kevin Thank-you!
I also heard Nancy Grace was going to be on DWTS (gonna be a strange season, 4 sho). I'm a little concerned by the significant weight gain of Chaz. Is that from injections of testosterone?
Cher is a super mom. She embraced Chaz every step of the way. And has anyone else been reading that Shilo Pitt (Brangela's birth child) also refuses to wear "girl" clothes, insists on boy clothes and toys. They too, are allow "her" to express "herself".
Congrats on EP!

I dont think anyone can understand what it means to be a transgendered individual just because someone puts himself out there. Not unless you experience it yourself.
Hawley- Agreed, I'm really proud to call her my friend
Z indeed
Painting- you said it!
Rei- thank-you!
Kate- not sure about the weight gain- - it is great- the feeling of peace in being able to be who you are cannot be artificially replicated
All these TV shows are pure distraction.
Now that he is Chaz...the smile seems ever present...and real as can be.
Hope Chaz can make a positive difference for people who need a champion in this judgemental world.
RW I think the government should bring back the WPA like they did during the 1st depression
Frank- As a woman I agree- she looked very uncomfortable and looks much more satisfied and happy as Chaz- kudos to him
Brazen agreed and thank-you
Plus, there is a very strong likelihood of mental illness involved in anyone wanting to surgically "change one's sex."
Just because a female cuts the hair short, gets tattoos and rides a Harley, does not mean that she is a man - and vice versa.
I used to counsel veterans. Once a month a guy would come into the office. He was about 6’3” tall, about 285 pounds, had a very bad body odor problem, had long hair, painted fingernails, and he preferred wearing a dress. Also, he was butt ugly.
He told me that he wanted to change his sex to female. He said that he was going through the required counseling prior to having the surgery. I asked him if his counselor was open and honest with him. He said he wasn’t sure.
I told him, you have too much baggage to change your sex. He asked why. I told him that if he changed his sex to female, he would be a 6’3” female, at 285 pounds, with very bad body odor, long hair, painted fingernails, wearing a dress and butt ugly. How could that possibly be a more favorable outcome? How would that enhance your dating possibilities or your sex life? The short answer is – it will not make any changes.
I do not know if he went ahead with the surgery, but I did give him something to think about before the surgery.
Chaz made the choice to become a She-He. Many people will not respect that. Cut some slack, and wish Chaz a healthy, happy and prosperous future. Everyone deserves that chance.
