Bio
I was born when Halley’s Comet last appeared overhead and named accordingly. Since then, I've become a writer, artist, and columnist. In addition to Open Salon, my work appears frequently in The Huffington Post, All Things Healing, Gender Across Borders: A Global Feminist Blog, and several other publications. I blog daily at my site HayleysComments.com I recently published my first book, "I Know Why They Call a Shell a Shell." The book is about domestic violence, a topic that I am very vocal about. It chronicles my journey away from tumultuous love affairs by weaving stories of her past with stories from literature, music, and visual art of both modern and classical significance. A Happy Birthday Note to Self

Let's just call this vintage artwork by your's truly courtesy of my father. Thanks Dad!

Dear Hayley,

Today is your birthday and I would like to commend you on the progress you made over the following year. Though the year was off to a slow start with spotty employment, bad dates, and even a psychopath boyfriend, from my perspective the year as a whole, ended well. I attribute this mainly to the way that you refuse to ever give up.

I know you write a lot about the importance of not giving up and I hope that the people who read your column take this advice from your heart to theirs. The previous year for you was a year full of what I refer to as 'growing pains.' Growing pain years are full of emotional pain and torment. To make matters worse, during these types of years, the days seem to drag along extremely sloooowly. 24 hours often feels more like 48. The phone never rings and when it finally does, it's usually a telemarketer. That was your 2009 in a nutshell. However, in a year like this when you are alone and faced with your grief, you are forced to tackle it head on; you cannot continue to ignore it like you had years prior (because let's be honest, if you don't face it, progress will continue to be slow or non-existent). 2010 wasn't much different. Though much less emotional, it was time for you to get your health in order. 2011 showed improvement, though like anything worthwhile it too was something that progressed slowly; it are these slow times in life we must utilize in order to heal.

All and all, I am writing today to remind you and everyone about the importance of these seemingly benign years and time periods. Though on the surface nothing appears to be happening, much is going on, you just can't see it. Things are aligning, the right people are coming closer and closer to entering your life, and you will be arriving at the right opportunities any moment as long as you stay on the right path. These are just more reasons why it's so important to embrace your failures. Within them are hidden opportunities for success, should you rise above your failures and stay positive for your future. Your failures were never meant to be your successes in the first place. There are better and bigger opportunities awaiting you if you are able to surpass any disappointment and keep on truckin.'

Well that's about all I have to say to both you and anyone reading this. And of course, a little excerpt from your favorite song ever wouldn't hurt:

May the good Lord be with you down every road you roam. And sunshine and happiness surround you when you're far from home. And may you grow to be proud, dignified, and true. And do unto others as you'd have done to you. Be courageous and be brave and in my heart you'll always stay Forever young.”

NOLA Thank-you!!! :)
Happy Birthday Hayley.. nothing but hugs and I loved this.
HUGGGGGGGGGGGGG
Happy Birthday, a very wise wish indeed. There is only one word I would change. I would remove the word failures, as it is not possible to fail when you are on the right path. I would change it to hurdles, since you have jumped over all of them and are on the next lap of the race.

Glad your year turned out to be one of growth and renewal. I will try to remember your good advice but I don't know. When one is constantly being assailed by the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune after fifty some odd years, life wears her down.
Poetess- I like that- great perspective- it should say hurdles not failures " it is not possible to fail when you are on the right path"

Miguela- I guess we just have to stay positive, there's not much else to do right?
Happy belated birthday, Hayley Rose. Continue forth and rock on.
