- Bio
- I was born when Halley’s Comet last appeared overhead and named accordingly. Since then, I've become a writer, artist, and columnist.
In addition to Open Salon, my work appears frequently in The Huffington Post, All Things Healing, Gender Across Borders: A Global Feminist Blog, and several other publications.
I blog daily at my site HayleysComments.com
I recently published my first book, "I Know Why They Call a Shell a Shell." The book is about domestic violence, a topic that I am very vocal about. It chronicles my journey away from tumultuous love affairs by weaving stories of her past with stories from literature, music, and visual art of both modern and classical significance.

Help Protect Farm Animals in Iowa
I received an email this morning from PETA. They are again combating a law that would prevent people from filming or photographing the interior of factory farms. It is too dangerous for these farms you see, rather than treat their animals humanely they would prefer to… Read full post »
Rush Thinks We're All Sluts
After Rush Limbaugh's recent explosion over birth control it is clear that Rush Limbaugh thinks we're all sluts. The controversy that caused the explosion: law student, Sarah Fluke's testimony on behalf of women. Yes, women. She argued that birth control should be covered by insurance even if… Read full post »
Drive-By Shooting
I had two days to clean out my grandmother's apartment. A lifetime of belongings stuffed into an economy living space. It wasn't always like that.
Years ago my grandmother did what she pleased. Her fingers were always adorned with diamond rings, her schedule was filled with luncheons and tenn… Read full post »
eBay Anonymous
Recently I saw a side of myself that I didn't know existed. I've always considered myself a nice person and rarely get angry. I've never road rage and in disagreements, I fight fairly, no name-calling or low blows. This side of me never before appeared--- that was until… Read full post »
Last night, I volunteered at the animal shelter. I always loved animals but started volunteering around the time I began attending rape counseling. Those memories had long been suppressed and by the time I finally got around to speaking to someone about them, I was in bad shape. I was definitel… Read full post »
Literature From Hell Part Deux: Ethan Frome Edition

If you've been following my blog, you must know about my longstanding aversion to Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness. The fact that I was forced to read Heart of Darkness over ten times and write even more papers about it--- gives the book's title… Read full post »
Why I Wrote My Memoir
"One morning, I unexpectedly awoke from a beautiful dream. I was on a cruise ship, it was early in the morning, the sun had just started to come up. I went outside onto the main deck. I walked to one side of the ship.… Read full post »
Don't Drink the Haterade
I have been blogging for a while and in the beginning did not get many hateful or even rude comments. This was probably due to the sensitive nature of many of my articles. Typically, haters stayed away from those articles likely figuring that a survivor of rape has probably been through… Read full post »

We Are All (Fat) Kids at Heart
Well maybe not you but I know that I am. Show me a skinny woman and I will show you someone who desperately wants a donut. Yes, a donut.
I never liked donuts and aside from the Dunkin Donut's Munchkins they had at elementary school functions,… Read full post »
In recent news, Chris Brown was caught acting like Chris Brown, again, and I’m not surprised.
As you know I rarely say anything bad about anybody, minus Chris Brown, my uncle, and that horrible ex-boyfriend I bring up every once in a while. I don’t really hold grudges against… Read full post »
Don't Get Even, Get Shoes
A while back I mentioned an article I was writing about online dating. I referred to it as "online dating turned unintentional social experiment." I haven't posted it yet but I will. For now, I have decided I am done with online dating. I… Read full post »

Didn't Whitney Houston Have It All?
A quick note about Whitney Houston
So many people look at Whitney Houston and other rich and famous celebrities like Lindsay Lohan with disdain. How could someone so beautiful and talented throw it all away? They wonder. They are so ungrateful, they say. It is easy to jump on this/… Read full post »

Abuse is Hereditary
My life has been...colorful to say the least. I thought I had seen everything and that nothing could really faze me, that was until yesterday, of course. I spent the day cleaning out my grandmother's apartment. She had a stroke a few months ago and is no… Read full post »

Abusive Relationships: Leave Before You Leave in a Bodybag, please.

The Vortex
Do I want to move to the Big City or
go back to the mountains of Vermont
where the silence is deafening, where I
will surely drown in the cavernous
green mountains, now hidden, snow
capped ?

Can't you just stop?
Those days I didn't feel alone, I just wanted to be left alone. Something about binging then purging my food calmed me, but why?
It was years before I got a better understanding of it all. Between years of doing it and not doing it, the… Read full post »
