You cannot help the poor by helping the rich. (And they really don't need the help.)
You cannot weaken the truly strong by strengthening the weak.
You cannot "thrift" your way out of destitution.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by giving his boss less incentive to pay more.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot take away people's independence and initiative. But apparently you can buy it for the right price.
You cannot help people permanently, and you shouldn't have to. You should, however, expect that any person may need help for a time--and this should not be a death sentence.
I personally wrote those words because I have grown weary of people who claim to feel sympathy for "the poor. " They will be the poor someday, and they will cry and moan with the rest of us. Perhaps they'll ask themselves why, but more likely they'll blame it on a liberal conspiracy.

Speaking of Hubert Humphrey, one of my favorite political stories is about a very long-winded speech HHH once gave. Afterwards his wife Muriel told him: "For your words to be eternal, they don't have to be endless."
Wise advice for all.
Mr. O'Rourke--by the gods, that is FUNNY. Never heard that quote from Muriel Humphrey...I'll have to pass it on. Succinctly, of course.
And now I'll get off my soapbox.
