Bio
"Imagine," says writer TK Dalton, "a knocked up Bookslut, Salam Pax with a dead beat ex instead of Raed. That's Terrible Mother." She's also a quick-thinking, smart-mouthed single mother to three kids. By day, she teaches writing to college freshmen and sophomores. By night, she cooks, cleans, parents and writes. She is, despite vehemently claiming to be one, not a hipster, but does have an MFA in Fiction from the University of Oregon, which she earned by duct-taping her children to chairs and feeding them bottles of Benadryl (not necessarily in that order). Terrible Mother still lives in Oregon, where she deals her snarky brand of parenting humor to her friends. "Another single mother blog?" says novelist Roby Connor. "Someone get this lady some Jesus."

Much Ado About Tripping

Rate: 13 Flag

I’ve been gone for some time, I know, and had pretty much given up blogging for the most part. There are many good reasons for this, not the least of which was the fact Mike ran into trouble getting something published in a journal because the editors found a small, very small, part of it on his Myspace blog. While that worked out for him in the end, I worried about losing the ability to publish on other, bigger and “more legit,” venues if I continue to publish here. I also worried that I wasn’t spending enough time revising my work, because writing a blog, even a good blog, isn’t as demanding as writing a kick-ass essay. There is no built-in system for revision, for example, and nothing to push a writer to keep getting better.

I still have those worries, but I am, for the moment, bypassing them in favor of posting about a new going-on. Mainly, that after several years of discussion and pie-in-the-sky dreaming, it looks as though my desire to take a long road trip with the Things through the US, and then write a book about it, will come to fruition. Because, as of right now, New Slang Philosopher and I are planning a 6-7 week journey through much of the contiguous United States, beginning around July 6.

It’s a huge trip, and it won’t be easy. Right now, I’m teaching an overload of classes in order to save money. I took my tax refund, and a bit of savings, and paid my entire rent for the summer, too, as a means of avoiding the terrible dwindling of cash flow that always hits around August. I’m actually doing mildly okay this year, primarily because I’ve been so careful.

So, I’m reviving my blog here to chronicle the planning, the purchasing of many and sundry items, and the actual execution of said event*. So far, we’ve decided to go as far Chicago, but we’d like to make it to Pennsylvania, and then head down to Florida, cutting across through to Texas, then up through Utah and Wyoming and Colorado. There will be more to come, maps and plans and much wringing of hands, I'm sure. There is still no guarantee that it will all go through, but I'm laying better than fair odds in favor of it happening.

And I'm pretty excited to be writing it, sharing it, here.

*tm

*I think “execution” might be the best word. Holy crap, what am I doing here?

So glad to see you back. Very much looking forward to reading the story as it goes along. I did a six month road trip starting in Utah. It was so awesome. I would give anything to go back, do it again and blog along the way, but the technology wasn't so advanced back then. This is one of the best reasons to blog that there is. Fresh, in the now experience. Can't wait!
Hey, call if you're passing through Cleveland. Your Things would enjoy the pool and playground behind my house. Meantime, good luck on this. Do you have a publisher for the book, or is that part coming later? Did you read Cross Country by Robert Sullivan? I met him through a friend--nice guy.
How exciting! You're going to have a ton of experiences about which to write by the time your trip is over. One word of advice: don't give the kids anything red to eat before a long car ride. Don't ask me how I know this.
Bon voyage! The road. I suggest making a great mixed CD all about traveling. Those songs will imprint to the experience and its a good thing. The Simon and Garfunkle song...what's the title. America...they all come to look for America. Pretty song. I like Yes's version better.
If in those last two weeks you find yourself driving through Kansas (say any time after August 1), look me up! In the current iteration of my own crazy plans, I'll have space for you + things + new slang if you need a KS crash pad.

And, hm, I dunno about this: and nothing to push a writer to keep getting better. I feel pushed every day. Sometimes gently, sometimes not, but the audience participation here gets me going more than isolated essay writing (though not toward revision, you're certainly right there).
I'm so excited to have you back, Heather! Can't wait to read about the trip!
thanks all. I'm pretty happy to be back. And planning this thing via the interwebs will be awesome.
Best news I've heard all day. This is something I've always wanted to do. You go, girl.
What a wonderful adventure. Best of luck in your planning.
Rated because I love to read Terrible Mother!
Some of my very best memories are the years I drove around the country, working seasonal jobs, and sleeping in a tent I know for some people these days, this is their scary reality. I feel lucky I got the chance to do it by choice and not under stress. I look forward to reading your travel posts so I can live vicariously through your words.
It was great getting to be a part of your road trip when you stopped here in Sioux Falls, SD! Hopefully our hotel, city, and great state left a good impression upon you. I wish you the best for the rest of the trip, and whatever life may bring your way.
