Sanford video: "I wasn't on the trail. I was on some tail."
Repercussions so far:
Family Values are down by 5 points.
Unemployment in Sanford's state remains steady, at around 11.5 percent.
Moral absolutes - the governor assures us - are still mostly absolute but there's some wiggle room.
Questions:
What is it with Republican politicians and hypocrisy, anyway? Is the hypocrisy itself a turn-on?
Also, why did Sanford outsource his adultery to Argentina? That seems politically unwise.
Random thoughts:
You know who's got to be loving this right now? John Ensign.
And you know whose confession of adultery is going to get almost as much airtime on Fox News this week as Mark Sanford's? Bill Clinton's from eleventy-zillion years ago.

Did I scoop this story, or what! I am so proud of my television viewing skills. And I type like a bitch, too. Now all I need is to scoop the video...
Ooh. Here's the first talking head (some woman on CNN) to roll out, "This is a bipartisan problem." Oh, puh-leese. The point is not that they are adulterers. It's that they are sanctimonious adulterers.
Infidelity is a human frailty. It's a shame that our these religious zealots who are Republican look so foolish after they espouse "family values" at every moment.
Pride goeth before a fall. Hang you head in shame govenor Sanford, I feel for your betrayed wife and four sons but not for you.
I don't respect him for what he did, but I respect his honesty, I hope the media doesn't turn this into a witch hunt.
shocking don't ya think?
I for one am surprised that something like this could happen
Me too. I want Ken Starr to turn it into a witch hunt.
Nothing productive or relevant.
Fox apparently later corrected this "error".
---- were we more "liberal" in 1884 than we are in 2009?
Those bitches. That's worth a post of its own.
...and what exactly did he "think" was going to happen when he left for five days without telling anyone where he was going!?!?!?
If someone isn't pounding the "family values" drum, and has an affair I figure it's their own business, but such blatant hypocrisy leaves one not being able to believe much of anything he says.
..and in 2012 let's not let the media forget that Newt Gingrich was carrying on an affair at the exact same time that he was railing against Clinton's extra-marital foibles.
I'm guessing Bill Clinton is SOOOOO happy these days. Media focused on more current horndogs - check! Hillary not in close proximity - check! Flush with cash - check! Rich friends with private jets and lots-o-babes around - check! Prepare for lift off!
My comment on Rob St. Amant's post basically said these people and their hypocrisy make me want to puke.
Damn!
I love the ask for the zone of privacy. Ummm, little late, buddy.
... or maybe what he meant by the "zone of privacy" thing was "...hey, my wife's going to be kicking my ass for the next month, so I don't need to be getting it from you, too."
..."my wife couldn't be here today, she's seeing a divorce lawyer."
If he abandons the family values plank in his platform maybe he can become a moderate and team with John Edwards in 2012 on a cross-party ticket!
Adultery may be equal opportunity, but sanctimonious bleep is a Republican gift. Embrace it, GOP.
Sheesh.
Maddow also played some timely reminder clips of Sanford at his sanctimonious best when other elected officials were accused of taking a Love Hike. (Euphemism #4 of 6.)
New! Fall Network Reality Show on TLC to replace Jon and Kate! "Sanford and Sons." With theme music by Little Richard: "Jenny, Jenny, Jenny, wont'cha come home to me.e.e.ee..."
I absolutely hear you. While I equally don't give a flip about others' private lives, I have had quite my fill of some 20 years of arrogant, sanctimonious/condescending, hypocritical right-wing in-your-face patronizing about "values" and concomitantly trying to use the government to force their putative versions of morality down our throats.
I can't help it, my schadenfreude runneth over today.
It used to be, "Only humans use tools." Then Jane Goodall filmed some chimpanzees using a crude screwdriver to assmple some shelves from IKEA, and it became "Only humans use those shelves for books."
"Clinton committed adultery" quickly became, "It's not the adultery; it's that he LIED about it." When a blanket condemnation of lying made it impossible to support Bush-Cheney, someone came up with, "Clinton lied UNDER OATH."
Eventually, there will be a need for something even more specific. "Clinton lied under oath and didn't cross his fingers." "Clinton lied under oath after handling the Lincoln Bible." "Clinton lied under oath about a sex act so perverse, Republicans can't even get it without flying to Argentina."
Etc.
Teehee.
It's difficult to distinguish between the two when you've got "holier-than-thou" all over your face.
Fred Sanford. *snerk*
